Finland charges Nigerian separatist with inciting terrorism
Finnish prosecutors on Friday said they had charged a man with inciting terrorism online who a media report identified as Nigerian separatist leader

Finland's
National Prosecution Authority
said in a statement that it had charged "a Finnish individual in a case involving suspected public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and participation in the activities of a terrorist group.
"
It added that the alleged crimes had been committed in the city of Lahti between 2021 and 2024 and were related to the suspect's efforts to establish Nigeria's Biafra region as an independent state.
The prosecution authority did not name the accused but Finnish public broadcaster YLE identified him as separatist leader Simon Ekpa.
Ekpa -- who claims to lead the Biafra Republic's government in exile -- was detained in November.
According to the prosecution authority, the accused remained in custody and denied the charges.
Ekpa is known as a self-proclaimed leader of a faction of the
Indigenous People of Biafra
(IPOB), which is pushing for the independence of Nigeria's southeast, where a bloody civil war was fought in the late 1960s.
The dual Finnish-Nigerian national has also been a local representative for Finland's conservative National Coalition Party in the city of Lahti, north of
Helsinki
, where he has served on a public transport committee.

When Ekpa was arrested, Finnish authorities also requested that four other people be remanded in custody on suspicion of financing Ekpa's activities.
On Friday, the prosecution authority said the prosecutor had decided to drop charges against four others in the case due to a lack of evidence.
Ekpa has been the subject of several of AFP's fact checks in recent years over false claims and disinformation he has made in independence campaigning.

The gang, police said, not just used the dark web to reach out to potential customers, but also conducted transactions using digital currencies like Bitcoin that left no digital footprint. In another case, Gurgaon police arrested a Nigerian national with 11.98 gram MDMA. The accused was identified as Nwafor Donatus Azor of Enugugu State, Nigeria. He was booked by Sector 57 police under NDPS Act. He had come to India on a tourist visa in 2023 which expired in 2024. In April, police arrested a woman near Paras Buildtech Sector 54 with narcotics. She was identified as Praise Osibe (28), a Nigerian national currently residing at Lohia Apartments in Delhi. 13.8 grams of illegal MDMA were recovered from the accused, and a case was registered under sections of the NDPS Act at Sector 53 police station. The accused woman came to India in 2011. She received the narcotics for supply from another Nigerian individual in Delhi. Police also arrested another Nigerian national involved in supplying illegal drugs to Osibe in April, at Sikanderpur Ghosi Pahadi Road. He was identified as Elamaru Edubuisi Pascal, Nigerian national currently residing in Delhi. Police interrogation revealed that he came to India on a businesses visa in 2011. A senior police officer said that the Nigerians are operating a huge nexus of drugs across the NCR. "A very few of those who come to India do genuine work or studies. The govt wants the police to identify the foreign nationals, those who have overstayed and deport them back. Once they are caught in crimes here, they get to stay for years here due to legal proceedings and thus they continue their drug business," the officer said.

HELSINKI: The suspect in a stabbing attack that wounded four near a Finnish shopping centre this week said he chose his victims randomly and believed he was being stalked, police said Friday. The 23-year-old suspect, a Finnish man, admitted to the Thursday violence and said he did not know the victims and did not choose them for any particular reason, police added. There was "no reason to suspect that the act was motivated by terrorism or racism", said police, noting the man had a record of violent crime.
