Terengganu obesity rate climbs to 76pc, with one in three teens affected; state Health Dept urges lifestyle changes
Its director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong said the figure marks a worrying increase of 15.2 per cent from 60.8 per cent recorded in 2011.
'What's more concerning is that one in three teenagers in the state is struggling with weight issues, largely due to unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles,' she said.
She warned that this trend could further raise the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems and high blood pressure, which are already prevalent in the state.
'Among teenagers, the constant use of gadgets and the easy availability of unhealthy food are major contributors to this problem,' she added when speaking at the Fun Run held in conjunction with the 2025 Obesity Awareness Campaign under the Terengganu State Health Agenda at Dataran Batu Buruk here today.
To address the issue, JKNT is intensifying public health programmes, including the 'War On Sugar' campaign, which aims to raise awareness about hidden sugars in food and beverages.
Dr Kasemani also encouraged the public to drink more plain water and prepare healthier meals at home as a way to reduce sugar intake. — Bernama

Dzulkefly said the ministry was reviewing the transfer requests but could ot accommodate every application without affecting health services in East Malaysia, which face a critical shortage of manpower. About 20% would not have their applications approved, he said. 'I know it's not ideal, but I've seen many specialists in Sabah who initially didn't want to go there. Now it's their 10th year and counting,' he told reporters today after launching a book on the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on Malaysia. Dzulkefly said not all placements can rely on arrangements for mutual transfers. On Thursday, the Dewan Rakyat was told there were 650 vacancies for permanent posts in Sarawak, but only seven medical officers have opted to take up these posts. Dzulkefly encouraged doctors, especially those posted as couples, to consider the long-term benefits of serving in East Malaysia. Asked what steps the ministry was taking to solve the high number of transfer requests, the minister said Putrajaya was exploring offering better incentive schemes to retain doctors in Sabah and Sarawak. 'We are trying to see what other incentives can be offered. We know this is an issue we can't completely avoid, but we will do our level best to manage it.' No queue jumping in Rakan KKM Dzulkefly gave an assurance there would be no queue jumping in the Rakan KKM programme, which offers 'premium economy' services at selected public hospitals. Under the programme, specialists can offer paid elective services, with the income reinvested to improve the health service. 'This isn't about jumping queues for emergency cases. It's about giving people an option for elective procedures while retaining top talent,' he said. He said a briefing on the programme would be held as some information on the initiative had been misinterpreted. Two weeks ago, the Malaysian Medical Association had questioned if wealthier patients would get faster access to health services, and urged the ministry to clarify the programme and if it would strain an already overstretched health service.

Sex crimes probe into Penang doctor still on, says minister

(Rawpixel pic) PETALING JAYA : Complaints against a Penang doctor accused of sexual crimes are taken seriously and the case is still under investigation by the health ministry, says Dzulkefly Ahmad. The health minister said the case comes under the purview of health director-general Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab and a designated committee tasked with reviewing professional conduct and disciplinary issues concerning doctors. 'If there's a complaint, we will attend to it seriously. Everyone who complains, we will follow through,' he told reporters after launching the 'Crisis and Community: Covid-19 in Malaysia' book at Gerakbudaya here today. On Thursday, the Women's Centre for Change questioned why the doctor based in Penang has yet to be charged when he has been arrested four times over alleged sexual crimes. The women's group questioned why he was still allowed to treat patients and take locum shifts at private clinics despite the multiple allegations. The suspect had been arrested on four occasions for offences allegedly committed at a hospital and three private clinics, with the most recent arrest on July 21. A woman claimed she was molested by the doctor during a medical examination at a private clinic in Bayan Baru on June 29. WCC urged the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) to suspend the doctor's practising licence pending legal proceedings. Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the doctor was recently arrested again and later released on bail. He also said prosecutors had ordered the cops to include the recent case in its overall investigation before submitting the probe papers to them.

Let the Health DG handle Penang doctor molest case, says Health Minister
PETALING JAYA: The Health director-general Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab, will be looking into the case of the Penang doctor who was caught for allegedly molesting female patients four times, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He was commenting on a question about the said doctor still practising despite the alleged sexual harassment incidents at a government hospital. Dzulkefly said this on Sunday (July 27) after launching the book titled 'Crisis and Community: Covid-19 in Malaysia', a compilation of essays on the Covid-19 crisis by all levels of society edited by Bridget Welsh. 'That matter falls within the jurisdiction of the Health director-general Dr Mahathar. 'As the Health Minister, I act based on the advice and information provided by the Director-General. So we will rely on his office to handle this. We will try to resolve this,' said Dzulkefly. On July 24, Penang police said that they had been instructed by the Deputy Public Prosecutor's (DPP) office to carry out further investigations on the doctor who was caught for allegedly molesting his female patients four times. Acting Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin then said three of the cases were reported in the northeast district, while the fourth and the most recent one was in the southwest district. "We submitted the investigation papers for the three original cases reported in the northeast district to the DPP's office. "We recently received instructions from the DPP's office to further investigate the cases,' said DCP Alwi. He said in regard to the fourth case in the southwest district, we have started the investigation. He said it is believed the 43-year-old doctor, who was said to be working in a government hospital in the northeast district, was transferred to a government clinic in the southwest district. "The recent incident occurred at a private clinic in the southwest district where he was doing locum,' said DCP Alwi.
