Indian Army places order of 450 NAGASTRA-1R loitering munitions from SDAL
The Nagastra-1R is a cost effective system with full re-usability of launcher systems. The advanced Loitering Munition System with 360 gimbal camera with the option of putting thermal camera option for night operations, the statement further read.
The systems has a proprietary encryption for both video and Telemetry communication and comes with high precision targeting system with 2 metres CEP and has more than 80% indegenous content. The systems have been tested at various locations, including Ladakh and Babina near Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh, the statement added.
Earlier on June 12, the Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) successfully completed the trial of its Hybrid VTOL UAV Rudrastra at the Pokharan Firing Range.
The trial was conducted in accordance with the Indian Army's performance parameters, including vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), high endurance, precision targeting, and mission flexibility.
The UAV demonstrated robust operational capability, covering a mission radius of over 50 km with a stable real-time video link and successfully returning to the original launch point. The total range, including loitering at the target area, exceeded 170 km, with an estimated endurance of approximately 1.5 hours.
A significant highlight of the trial was the successful deployment of a precision-guided anti-personnel warhead. Dropped from medium altitude, the munition executed an airburst detonation at low height, achieving a lethal effect over a wide radius, meeting tactical effectiveness benchmarks.
This successful demonstration marks a major milestone in India's pursuit of indigenized defence technologies and is a strong step toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
In a related development, SDAL had earlier tested a new low-cost counter-drone solution in hard-kill mode, named 'Bhargavastra'. Designed to neutralise hostile drone swarms, the system employs micro-rockets to deliver rapid and effective responses. The trials were conducted at the Seaward Firing Range in Gopalpur on May 13 and 14 under the observation of senior Army Air Defence (AAD) officials.

The total cost of this project is said to be around Rs 33,000 crore. How Can QRSAM Provide Protection During Ground Attack? QRSAM is usually used during ground attacks in enemy territory. Whenever Indian tanks enter enemy territory, QRSAMs will also move along. If enemy tries air attack on Indian tanks, they will be stopped by QRSAM. It is developed by DRDO and its missile and radars are developed by the indigenous company BEL. The vehicle on which QRSAM is set up is being made by BDL. This surface-to-air missile system, which is mounted on an 8×8 truck chassis with six launch tubes, has 30-km range. Capable of intercepting and engaging six targets simultaneously, QRSAM features electronic countermeasures to prevent jamming. Successful testing has proved its effectiveness against various aerial threats, which includes fighter jets, attack helicopters, and precision-guided munitions. Does India Have Other Vehicle-Based Air Defence Systems? The Indian armed forces have been using vehicle-based air defence systems which were purchased from Russia decades ago. These include Shilka, Tungushka, Strela-10M, Osa AK and Pechora. However, these will be replaced by indigenous QRSAM. The Pechora air defence system is deployable in both mobile and stationary forms. However, it is now outdated and is being replaced by the Akash system.

Curtain raiser for Tri-Services Academia Technology Symposium held at Manekshaw Centre
New Delhi (India), July 4 (ANI): The Indian Army conducted a Curtain Raiser event on Friday for the upcoming Tri-Services Academia Technology Symposium at the Manekshaw Centre, New Delhi, the Ministry of Defence said in a release on Friday. The event was conducted in coordination with the Integrated Defence Staff, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The event formally launched preparations for the main symposium scheduled to be held on 22-23 September 2025. Themed 'Vivek va Anusandhan se Vijay', the initiative aims to deepen collaboration between the Armed Forces and academia for the development of cutting-edge indigenous technologies. The primary objective of the symposium is to develop an integrated perspective for creating a synergised Services - Academia R&D ecosystem. It seeks to identify and harness the scientific potential within academic institutions to meet the niche technological needs of the Indian Armed Forces, thereby contributing to long-term self-reliance in defence capabilities. As part of the Curtain Raiser, a dedicated portal was inaugurated to facilitate participation from academic institutions across the country. The portal allows institutions to register their representatives, who can either attend the symposium as 'Attendees' or submit project proposals and exhibits. Attendees will be able to take part in the various seminars and panel discussions planned for the final event, offering a valuable opportunity for knowledge exchange and collaboration. Submitted proposals and exhibits will be reviewed by subject matter experts from the respective Defence Services. Shortlisted entries will be invited for one-on-one discussions with services representatives and will be showcased during the exhibition segment of the symposium. The most promising innovations and proposals will be recognised and felicitated during the valedictory session. What is Indian Army planning? During the four-day clash with Pakistan, the Indian Armed Forces were directly pitted against Chinese and Turkish weaponries which it nullified with ease. They were getting live inputs from China. That is one place we really need to move fast,' said Lt Gen Singh. What is C4 ISR? C4ISR stands for Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. It is a military term that refers to a collection of systems and technologies designed to enhance situational awareness, streamline communication, and ensure seamless coordination among various units, ultimately enabling informed and effective decision-making during combat operations. Lt General Singh mentioned how Pakistan was getting help from Chinese satellites. China has deployed several reconnaissance/ surveillance satellites in the past few years compared to India while ISRO has to catch up with Beijing. How equipped is India compared to Israel and America? Israel has a strong air defence system that includes Irone dome, Arrow, David's Sling and America's THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) while the United States is also preparing for a multi-layered air defence system named Golden Dome. As for India, given its vast area and location, it needs an air defence system capable of protecting the whole nation. Lieutenant General Rahul R Singh highlighted the need for a similar, rather more powerful air defence system that can take on both China and Pakistan. 'There is a need for a robust air defence system. Our population centres need to be protected. We don't have the luxury of Israel's Iron Dome and a number of other air defence systems. We don't have such a system as our country is vast and such things cost a lot of money. This time, our population centres were not quite addressed, but next time, we need to be prepared for that,' he said.
