At least 6 dead as migrant boat capsizes near Canary Islands port
MADRID : At least six people died when a migrant boat bound for Spain's Canary Islands capsized off the island of El Hierro as rescuers were escorting it to port, regional emergency services said on Wednesday.
The open-topped boat, which according to state broadcaster TVE was laden with around 180 people, went down as it neared La Restinga harbour on El Hierro, the archipelago's smallest island.
A spokesperson for the islands' maritime rescue service said a rescue vessel was escorting the boat to the harbour and as it approached, many of its passengers appeared to rush to one side of the precarious vessel, causing it to capsize.
TVE live footage showed the boat sinking, throwing migrants – including children – into the water, with many trying to clamber onto the nearby maritime rescue vessel as its crew tossed life preservers to them.
A medical helicopter was sent to help emergency personnel pluck migrants from the water, the emergency services said.
The number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands from West Africa hit an all-time high in 2024 but the number of arrivals has fallen this year, Interior Ministry data indicate.
The Atlantic route is especially dangerous as rough weather can easily capsize the fragile rafts, dugout-like boats and dinghies used by most migrants.
In the first five months of 2024, 4,808 people died on the Atlantic voyage to the Canaries after departing from Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia, according to migrant rights group Walking Borders.

Man dies as 4WD plunges into 10m ravine in Kapit's logging road, four others survive
SIBU, July 21 — An elderly man died while four others survived after the four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle they were in skidded and plunged into a ravine at Kilometre 38.6 of Jalan Musah/Kajah, Song in Kapit Division last night. A spokesperson at the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department's Operations Centre said the victim, identified as Berain Sinau, 81, died after the Mitsubishi Triton vehicle plunged into the ravine, which is about 10 metres deep. According to him, another passenger, Basir Dingun, 43, suffered injuries and was sent to Kanowit Hospital by passers-by, while the driver, aged 50, and two other passengers, aged 61 and 44 respectively, did not suffer any injuries. 'There were five individuals in the vehicle. One died on the scene, one was injured, while the other three survived without injury,' he said in a statement today. He said the emergency call regarding the incident was received at 7.50 pm, and the Operations Response Team (PKO) from the Song Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the location with the assistance of the Song police using two four-wheel drive vehicles. 'The rescue team had to travel through a logging road for 46 kilometres before arriving at the location at 9.23 pm. Teen drowns in Segamat River, body found 5km from last seen spot
SEGAMAT, July 21 — A 14-year-old boy drowned while swimming in Sungai Segamat, behind a recreational park here, yesterday. Segamat Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) operations commander Mohd Hazim Abd Razak said they were alerted to the incident at 4.08 pm. According to him, 11 personnel from Segamat BBP, along with four assets, namely a Light Fire Rescue Tender (LFRT), two four-wheel-drive vehicles and a boat, were dispatched to the scene. He said the victim's body was found along the riverbank about five kilometres from where he was reported to have gone missing. The search operation ended at 6.40 pm. — Bernama
