Campers mourn tapir mascot killed near MARDI Cherating Agrotech Park
The incident occurred around 12.10 am when the animal was crossing the road and collided with a Perodua Alza.
Acting Kuantan police chief Supt Mohd Adli Mat Daud confirmed the driver, a 41-year-old man, was unharmed.
Authorities quickly secured the scene to manage traffic on the dimly lit road.
The tapir's carcass, weighing over 120 kg, was handed to the Pahang Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).
Badrol Hisham Mohamad, a local resident, was among the first to arrive and helped alert authorities.
He noted that several motorists stopped to assist in directing traffic due to the carcass blocking the road.
MARDI Cherating Agrotechnology Park expressed grief over the loss in a Facebook post, calling the tapir a cherished attraction for visitors.

BENGHAZI (Reuters) -More than 100 migrants, including five women, have been freed from captivity after being held for ransom by a gang in eastern Libya, the country's attorney general said on Monday. "A criminal group involved in organising the smuggling of migrants, depriving them of their freedom, trafficking them, and torturing them to force their families to pay ransoms for their release," a statement from the attorney general said. Libya has become a transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty to Europe via the dangerous route across the desert and over the Mediterranean following the toppling of Muammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed uprising in 2011. Many migrants desperate to make the crossing have fallen into the hands of traffickers. The freed migrants had been held in Ajdabiya, some 160 km (100 miles) from Libya's second city Benghazi. Five suspected traffickers from Libya, Sudan and Egypt, have been arrested, officials said. The attorney general and Ajdabiya security directorate posted pictures of the migrants on their Facebook pages which they said had been retrieved from the suspects' mobile phones. They showed migrants with hands and legs cuffed with signs that they had been beaten. In February, at least 28 bodies were recovered from a mass grave in the desert north of Kufra city. Officials said a gang had subjected the migrants to torture and inhumane treatment. That followed another 19 bodies being found in a mass grave in the Jikharra area, also in southeastern Libya, a security directorate said, blaming a known smuggling network. As of December 2024, around 825,000 migrants from 47 countries were recorded in Libya, according to U.N. data released in May. Last week, the EU migration commissioner and ministers from Italy, Malta and Greece met with the internationally recognised prime minister of the national unity government, Abdulhamid Dbeibah, and discussed the migration crisis. Bursa Malaysia Reprimands Zetrix AI, Fines Seven Directors RM150,000 Each
BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd has publicly reprimanded Zetrix AI Bhd, formerly known as MYEG Services Bhd, and fined seven directors for breaching the Bursa Malaysia Securities Main Market listing requirements (LR). The stock exchange operator imposed a fine of RM150,000 on each director, including the company's group managing director, Wong Thean Soon; executive chairman Datuk Dr Norraesah Mohamad; and non-independent non-executive director, Datuk Mohd Jimmy Wong Abdullah. Also reprimanded and fined were independent non-executive directors Wong Kok Chau, Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff, Datuk Mohd Jeffrey Joakim and Mohaini Mohd Yusof. According to Bursa Malaysia Securities, the findings of breach and the imposition of penalties on the company and the directors were made pursuant to paragraph 16.19 of the Main Market LR upon completion of due process and after taking into consideration all facts and circumstances of the matter. These included the materiality of the breaches, the impact of the breaches on the company and shareholders/investors, and the roles, responsibilities, knowledge, involvement and conduct/action/inaction of the directors. JAIS to call new witnesses in eHati probe tomorrow - Mohd Na'im
KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) will call two new witnesses tomorrow as part of its investigation into the eHati marriage programme, which has been linked to alleged immoral activities and questionable religious practices. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, confirmed the investigation is being conducted under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. 'The investigation has begun, and we hope the witnesses will cooperate tomorrow,' he said after officiating the pre-launch of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
