Trump deploys 200 Marines to Florida in support of ICE operations

Daily Mail12 hours ago
President Donald Trump is sending 200 Marines to Florida to help ICE officials on the ground as leading Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez warns voters 'it is an explosion.' Trump's mobilization of the Marines came after a request from the Department of Homeland Security in May for military assistance.
Last month, he deployed 700 Marines to Los Angeles to contend with unruly anti-immigration protestors, sparking a furious response from California Governor Gavin Newsom . 'These Marines are the first wave of U.S. Northern Command's support of this ICE mission,' the Northern Command said in a statement. Other deployments are expected to be made to Louisiana and Texas , officials said.
The service members who are called to duty in Florida will 'perform strictly non law enforcement duties within ICE facilities.' This will include administrative and logistical tasks, freeing up ICE agents to dedicate their working hours to conducting arrests and tracking down illegal criminals. 'They are specifically prohibited from direct contact with individuals in ICE custody or involvement in any aspect of the custody chain,' the statement added.
It comes after Trump's Big, Beautiful Bill finally passed through Congress, paving the way for him to sign it into law on Friday July 4 - Independence Day. The landmark tax cuts and spending legislation contains many of the Republican's campaign promises, totaling $3.3 trillion. The tax cuts alone will cost $4.5 trillion over the next ten years, according to projections from the Congressional Budget Office. To offset the massive price tag Republicans included $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, mainly trimming Medicaid, the health care program for the poor and disabled.
Border security efforts will also be getting a major cash infusion estimated to be around $150 billion for increased immigration enforcement. It includes $46 billion for Customs and Border Patrol to build border wall and enhanced security measures and around $30 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The passage of the bill sparked a furious response from leading Democrat Ocasio-Cortez , who warned: 'I don't think anyone is prepared for what they just did w/ ICE.' 'This is not a simple budget increase. It is an explosion - making ICE bigger than the FBI , US Bureau of Prisons, DEA and others combined,' she wrote on Bluesky. 'It is setting up to make what's happening now look like child's play.' In a chilling warning to the public, Ocasio-Cortez warned: 'People are disappearing.'
The measure also stirred controversy within GOP ranks and even drew the ire of billionaire Elon Musk for its massive spending, which he likened to 'political suicide.' Trump has committed to embarking on the largest mass deportation scheme in American history as part of his mission to secure US borders. Last month, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth greenlit up to 700 military personnel helping ICE agents across Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
And in Florida, Trump has proudly touted his 'Alligator Alcatraz' detention facility, which will be manned by just under 70 Florida National Guard troops. Trump on Tuesday toured the new immigration detention center surrounded by alligator-filled swamps in the Florida Everglades, suggesting it could be a model for future lockups nationwide as his administration races to expand the infrastructure necessary for increasing deportations. Trump said he'd like to see similar facilities in 'really, many states' and raised the prospect of also deporting US citizens.

Democratic lawmakers denied entry to ‘Alligator Alcatraz' immigration jail

A group of Florida lawmakers were denied entry on Thursday into the new Florida-based immigration jail dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz' one day after the first immigrant detainees began to arrive. Five Democratic lawmakers attempted to enter the facility, which was previously toured on Tuesday by White House officials, but were stopped by law enforcement officers from local agencies, according to the state representative Anna Eskamani in an interview with CNN. 'This is a blatant abuse of power and an attempt to conceal human rights violations from the public eye,' the five said in a joint statement. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the first detentions at the facility began on Wednesday, but did not respond to questions regarding the number of people detained so far. The controversial Everglades jail was quickly set up in a partnership between the federal and Florida state governments. Sitting approximately 50 miles (80km) west of Miami, the remote facility is managed by the state but in large part funded the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema). 'It might be as good as the real Alcatraz. A little controversial, but I couldn't care less,' Trump said on Tuesday after touring the site. During the tour, Trump joked about immigrants being pursued by snakes and alligators if they attempted to escape. Since Trump took office, Florida has been assisting the administration's goals in rounding up a large number of immigrants to be detained and deported. Through a program called 287(g), local law enforcement agencies partner with DHS and become deputized to carry out immigration enforcement operations. According to the state government, Florida has more 287(g) deputizations than any other state in the US, which has allowed it to engage in widespread operations targeting immigrant communities. 'You'll have a lot of people that will deport on their own because they don't want to end up in an Alligator Alcatraz, or some of these other places,' Florida governor Ron DeSantis said after touring the facility with Trump. 'This is a model, but we need other states to step up.' Being undocumented in the US is not a crime; rather, it is a civil offense. Data analysis by the Guardian shows that there has been a dramatic nationwide increase in the arrest of undocumented immigrants with no criminal record. The White House has pressured immigration officials to arrest 3,000 people per day, with the reported goal of reaching one million a year. Two non-profit groups have sued DHS, claiming the site's buildup is violating environmental policies. DHS said it expects the facility to expand quickly to 5,000 beds.

Boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr set to go to JAIL in Mexico once deported from America after arrest over 'cartel links'

Troubled boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. will be deported and, hopefully, imprisoned in his native Mexico, that country's President, Claudia Sheinbaum, said Friday after the 39-year-old was arrested by ICE agents in Los Angeles. The son and namesake of Mexico's greatest boxer, the younger Chavez was arrested for overstaying his visa and lying on a green-card application. In Mexico, he's wanted for on allegations of drug and gun trafficking. His arrest comes just a week after his unanimous-decision defeat to influencer-boxer Jake Paul. 'The hope is that he will be deported and serve the sentence in Mexico,' Sheinbaum said Friday as Chavez faces allegations of trafficking firearms and drugs. Chavez was picked up Wednesday by ICE agents while riding his scooter in the upscale LA neighborhood of Studio City. 'Do you have anything in your shoes,' one agent is heard asking Chavez in Spanish in the clip recorded by Fox LA's Matthew Seedorff . 'No,' Chavez replied, before asking: 'Do you inform my lawyer when I have a warrant?' In its statement, DHS explained Chavez Jr's warrant relates to 'his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives'. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said: 'This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate with an active arrest warrant for trafficking guns, ammunition, and explosives was arrested by ICE. Chavez has spent considerable time in his native Mexico and the US in recent years, but according to the Department of Homeland Security, his tourist visa expired in February of 2024. The agency further claims Chavez filed several fraudulent statements while applying for permanent residence in April of 2024 after marrying Frida Muñoz, who is related to imprisoned Sinaloa cartel kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman. Chavez's father has openly spoken about his own relationships with the Sinaloa Cartel and, in particular, 'El Chapo'. In a podcast with journalist Javier Alarcon in 2021, Chavez revealed: 'Not just El Chapo, I've met all the most wanted drug traffickers, like Amado Carrillo, El Azul [Esparragoza], and El Mayo [Zambada]. 'I know them all, and they've all been my friends, but that's about it. Those people, if you know them, are good people'. NEW; Through federal sources, I have obtained video of ICE arresting Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Wednesday in Studio City, CA. The boxer is accused of being affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel. — Matthew Seedorff (@MattSeedorff) July 3, 2025 Donald Trump's DHS has accused the Biden White House of allowing Chavez to re-enter the US illegally. 'It is shocking the previous administration flagged this criminal illegal alien as a public safety threat, but chose to not prioritize his removal and let him leave and COME BACK into our country.' Under President Trump, no one is above the law—including world-famous athletes. Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences. The days of unchecked cartel violence are over.' Chavez's attorney, Michael Goldstein, blasted the DHS' claims in a statement to The Associated Press. 'The current allegations are outrageous and simply another headline to terrorize the community,' Goldstein said.

Putin and Xi's plot to topple the US dollar is dead

As the 17th Brics Summit kicks off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this weekend, leaders of two of the most important founding nations will be conspicuous by their absence. Chinese president Xi Jinping will skip the meeting, for the first time in more than a decade, sending Premier Li Qiang in his stead. Russia's Vladimir Putin is also sitting this one out. Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov will represent Russia, in light of the outstanding International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against the Russian president, which Brazil would be obliged to enforce. But there may be more to their decision to avoid the summit than meets the eye. The Brics has been on Donald Trump's target list ever since he won the 2024 election. In January, 10 days after he started his second term as president, Trump issued a statement on Truth Social. 'We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new Brics Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar or, they will face 100 per cent Tariffs'. Formally founded in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, the Brics – which South Africa joined a year later – has since expanded to include 10 countries, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia all now members. Effectively created to act as a counterweight to perceived US and Western dominance in international institutions, it has since become far more than just a talking-shop for emerging economies. The group has expressed an interest in challenging the hegemony of the US dollar, ending its role as the preferred currency for conducting international transactions. This ambition will have been driven in part by fears among the member nations – many of which are governed by authoritarian regimes – of financial sanctions, should the US seek to punish them for behaviour contrary to international norms. The concept of creating a Brics currency, as an alternative to the dollar, gained additional momentum in the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which saw Moscow hit with significant US and European sanctions, Russian banks removed from the SWIFT payment system, and Russian international currency reserves frozen. But since the beginning of the year, Trump's threats against the Brics have escalated. 'There is no chance that Brics will replace the US Dollar in International Trade, or anywhere else, and any Country that tries should say hello to Tariffs, and goodbye to America!' he said in January. In February, as he was heading out to meet with Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, Trump pronounced the Brics 'dead,' adding that 'if they want to play games with the dollar, they're going to be hit with a 100 per cent tariff'. In April, Trump's tariff blitzkrieg sent shockwaves across the Brics nations, prompting foreign ministers from the member countries, led by Brazilian ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, to begin coordinating a response criticising 'unilateral measures of any origin'. The planned joint declaration fell through, however, due to internal disagreements. Failing to reach consensus, the joint statement was replaced with a 'chair statement', containing generic language that did not name the US.
