Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen pulls out of the US Open after elbow surgery

NEW YORK (AP) — Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen withdrew from the U.S. Open on Monday, two days after announcing she had arthroscopic surgery on her right elbow because of 'persistent pain.'
The sixth-ranked Zheng was coming off a first-round loss at Wimbledon last month.
'Over the past months, I've been dealing with persistent pain in my right elbow during training and matches,' the right-handed 22-year-old from China said on social media Saturday. 'Despite trying various treatments to manage it, the discomfort never fully went away.'
Zheng said she anticipated her recovery would take months, so the exit from the year's last Grand Slam tournament was not a surprise. The U.S. Open begins Aug. 24.
She was replaced in the field by France's Leolia Jeanjean.

Chenal, a silver medalist in giant slalom at the 2006 Turin Olympics, was among the France national team coaches from 2013-17. 'Following the publication today of a new press article providing new information, including the identity of witnesses, and following the initial testimonies gathered by its ethics committee, the president of the federation has decided to open disciplinary proceedings with the immediate provisional suspension of Joel Chenal,' the federation said in a statement. Le Monde reported that Chenal is the subject of a complaint for sexual assault. The federation said it will join the legal case. 'This demonstrates its commitment to supporting victims, cooperating fully with the judicial authorities and shedding light on these unacceptable events,' the federation said. Le Monde has said previously that Chenal denies the accusations. Sports Golf Canada Canada Sunshine Girls

Lizzie Deignan retires from cycling after announcing pregnancy

LONDON (AP) — British cyclist Lizzie Deignan, a former world champion who won the 'triple crown' of monuments, is retiring with immediate effect because she is expecting her third child. Deignan, who was the first British athlete to win a medal on home soil at the 2012 London Olympics, had previously announced that she would call it quits at the end of the season. But she brought forward her retirement, her team said. 'The Deignan family is growing,' the Lidl-Trek team said. 'The former world champion, who announced at the end of last year that 2025 would be her final season, has shared the joyful news that she is expecting her third child, a moment that subsequently marks Deignan's immediate retirement from the peloton.' The 36-year-old Deignan competed in her fourth Olympics in Paris last year and was 12th in the road race. She was successful on the track first and then morphed into a one-day race specialist. Deignan won the rainbow jersey at the 2015 world championships, one of her many professional road victories at the biggest races. She's won all three women's monuments: The Tour of Flanders in 2016, Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 2020 and the inaugural Paris-Roubaix Femmes in 2021. Deignan put her career on pause in 2018 when she had her first child, and planned to retire earlier but was convinced to carry on by her team. She made a successful comeback in 2019, winning The Women's Tour in her first year back to top-level competition. She missed the 2022 season to welcome her second child before returning for a second time in 2023. ___ AP sports:

Dolphins' Matos in stable condition, remains in hospital for observation after training camp injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos remained under observation at the Ryder Trauma Care Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Thursday, one day after he was transported there by helicopter from training camp with an undisclosed injury. The Dolphins said in a statement that Matos 'has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition,' but they did not provide any other details of his injury. The team also did not say how long Matos would be under the care of doctors. 'It's a really heartbreaking part of the game,' fellow Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson said of the injury, which occurred in the final minutes of Day 1 of training camp. 'Very tough.' The 24-year-old Matos was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and played his college football at New Mexico and South Florida. He was undrafted in 2024 and signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program, an initiative that gives athletes from countries outside the U.S. a chance to play in the league. Matos, who signed a reserve/future contract in January, had spent time with Miami's practice squad over the past year. Matos only started playing football a few years ago. He grew up playing baseball and basketball, and after moving to Tennessee for high school, popped up on the radar of hoops coaches. Matos wound up redshirting and playing one season for New Mexico before transferring to South Florida, where he continued playing basketball and walked onto the football team. The 6-foot-7, 334-pound Matos started off as a defensive lineman and special teams player before switching to offensive line.
