Brazilian news outlet Combate was first to report the news of Pepey's arrest in Deerfield Beach in South Florida. Court documents show Pepey, who turned 38 Wednesday, charged with kidnapping and inflicting bodily harm or terrorizing the victim; domestic battery by strangulation; witness tampering; and domestic violence. The combined bail was set for the Brazilian at $120,000. But a fifth charge is an immigration hold on Pepey. In essence, that means if he makes bail, it would only be so he could be taken into custody by immigration officials for possible deportation. In the aftermath of Pepey's arrest, his wife, Samara Mello, posted on Instagram, in coordination with Rose Gracie of the non-profit Fighting Foundation, a charity supporting fighters – or in this case, the wife of one. The photo included showed a battered, bloodied and bruised portion of her face. The post, written in Portuguese, said she is a survivor of domestic violence and that it is prevalent enough in the combat sports world that it needs to be addressed more than it has been. "We need to stop treating this as a secret. Violence grows in silence," Mello posted, via translation. "I hope the authorities in Brazil and the world understand that the blood on my face and my body flows through the hands of those who still see femicide as a statistic and they don't do enough to change it." Mello's most recent social media post on the Instagram platform that included Pepey was less than a month ago and included a slide show of many photos of the couple together. But her Thursday post painted a very different story. Pepey (14-7), from Fortaleza, was on Season 1 of "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil" in 2012. He lost the featherweight final to Rony Jason, then went on to 10 more fights in the UFC with a mixed bag that left him 5-6 overall in the promotion. But a stretch in 2014-2014 on the heels of back-to-back losses saw him go on a yearlong surge of three straight first-round finishes – and three straight post-fight performance bonuses, including one for a triangle choke finish of Andre Fili in the most standout moment of his career. Pepey was cut loose from the UFC after three losses in four fights, though, in 2018. Since then, he has fought just three more times, most recently a first-round loss to Abdoul Abdouraguimov in the Ares FC 3 main event in Paris in early 2022.

Baby-faced Brooklyn gangbangers terrorized neighborhood with gun violence — and boasted about carnage: prosecutors
A band of baby-faced gangbangers who dubbed themselves 'Road 2 Riches' allegedly shot an innocent 68-year-old woman, opened fire inside a bodega and brazenly boasted about murdering a rival gangster as they terrorized their Brooklyn neighborhood with gun violence, prosecutors said Thursday. The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office and NYPD cracked down on nine members of the 'Road 2 Riches' crew — who are all 20 years or younger — as they threw down a disturbing 68-count indictment on the pack of brutes on Wednesday. The gangsters were allegedly behind ten different shootings over the past couple of years — at one point striking an innocent 68-year-old woman in hopes of taking out warring gang members in East New York and Brownsville, District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said during a press conference Thursday. Brooklyn District Attorney Office 'And this kind of indiscriminate gun violence is what makes people in Brooklyn afraid, and this is why this indictment is so important,' the top Brooklyn prosecutor said, adding, 'No one should have to live with the fear of bullets whizzing by them.' In one brazen shooting, King Downing, 18, allegedly opened fire inside a bodega when he and other R2R members saw two unarmed brothers they believed were part of another gang walk inside in August 2023. Advertisement Victim Abdoulaye Ba, 24, was shot in the head and later pronounced dead, prosecutors said. R2R was quick to celebrate the fatal shooting on social media. 'Your homie died, them shot on us,' an Instagram post said, while other posts bragged about 'smoking' the victim, Gonzalez said. 'Now, typically, when someone commits a homicide or a murder, they don't want to be identified as the person who did it,' Gonzalez said. Advertisement 'But in this gang violence arena, people need to take credit for the shooting of rival gang members, and this is what you see here.' In another shooting, DeAnthony Ortiz, 18, allegedly took aim and fired at two men in territory controlled by another gang in Brownsville in broad daylight. The gunfire struck a 68-year-old woman who was simply trying to get home from grocery shopping in October 2023. Brooklyn's top prosecutor decried the gun violence. Other shootings involved injuring a 14-year-old boy, a perceived R2R enemy, in March 2023 and hitting two moving vehicles when gangsters allegedly shot at a possible rival on a scooter in April 2025, prosecutors said. One car was an Uber that had a father and his two daughters inside. The trio and driver were unharmed when the bullet hit the front passenger's seat. Gangsters also shot at a group of people on another opponent's turf, wounding a 23-year-old man in November 2024, according to prosecutors. R2R has been at war with 'Pistol Packin Pitkin' (PPP) and the 'WOOO' and 'CHOO' Folk Nation gangs, according to the district attorney's office. 'They've been fighting with everyone,' Gonzalez said of R2R. The nine suspects are facing a wide array of charges, including second- and fourth-degree conspiracy, second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, prosecutors said. Mayor Eric Adams tore into the alleged gangsters and pleaded with city and state lawmakers to pass tougher laws that could help authorities clamp down on violent offenders. 'Younger and younger people are becoming victims of crimes and participating in crime.' Downing, Ortiz, Mikeem Echevarria, 18, Jevonte Jaime, 17, Qvon Weaver, 19, Quinn Parker, 19, Anthony Wilkinson, 20, Korey George, 19, and Samuel Gaiter, 18, were held on remand or high bail, according to the district attorney's office.

Several 4th of July celebrations canceled in Los Angeles over fears of ICE raids
Several Fourth of July celebrations have been canceled in Los Angeles over fears of raids by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to local officials and event organizers. In early June, ICE agents carried out a series of immigration sweeps across Southern California, sparking protests in Los Angeles that spread nationwide as the raids impacted other parts of the country. The threat of continued ICE raids has continued, prompting some officials and organizers to express concern over the welfare of revelers congregating in large celebratory gatherings. The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation said it postponed the East Los Angeles Rockin' 4th of July celebration -- as well as the Summer Movies and Concert in the Parks series that takes place at Schabarum Park -- due to potential ICE raids. "Out of caution, and in response to recent ICE enforcement activity impacting our communities, we are prioritizing safety and well-being of our residents, visitors, and staff," the parks department wrote in a statement posted to Instagram. Organizers for the Gloria Molina Grand Park Summer Block Party in Los Angeles County wrote on an Instagram post that the event is being postponed out of "an abundance of caution." "We know this is disappointing news," organizers said. "We were so looking forward to celebrating with all of you at #TheParkforEveryone. Please know that your safety is our absolute first priority." The party was scheduled to take place Friday afternoon through the nighttime fireworks show. Postponements and cancellations also occurred in the Bell Gardens and Cudahy, which are predominately Hispanic communities, ABC Los Angeles station KABC reported. In addition, the El Sereno Bicentennial Committee canceled its 66th Annual Independence Day Parade after several entries were withdrawn leading up to the holiday, organizers announced on June 20. The is typically filled with local groups, schools, organizations and performers as well as classic cars and motorcycle stunt shows on Route 66. "The people who participate in the parade are some of the most patriotic people you would meet," parade organizers said in a statement. "Our community has always been a melting pot of many cultures and beliefs. It is what has given our town its strength and resiliency." Independence Day celebrations at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, however, are expected to continue -- but this year with a drone show, rather than fireworks. But events in public spaces feel "dangerous" for many residents, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado, who oversees District 14, told KABC. "This is not the time to host large public gatherings because people are afraid," Jurado said. "For Fourth of July and Independence, it rings hollow for a lot of our constituents here." Elsewhere throughout the country, security protocols were ramping up ahead of the holiday. The New York City Police Department is expected to deploy hundreds of officers and impose closures on roads, bridges and train routes due to a heightened threat environment, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced Wednesday.
