
The Simple Pleasures of a Stoop Vegetable Garden
In a way, the collection of plants currently sitting on the stoop of my Brooklyn apartment is its own little kind of victory garden. A concerted effort to care for something tangible, that also may just feed me at some point this summer (as long as I stick to my watering schedule). Earlier this year, I interviewed a series of New Yorkers about what they were buying ahead of Trump's potential incoming tariffs. Julia Fox, star of Uncut Gems and girl about town, told me, 'I bought seeds to plant my own food, just in case.' At a time when everything seems to be a recession indicator, a vegetable garden may be the most hopeful one to consider.
This isn't my first summer spent trying to keep plants alive on my porch. Last year, my tomato plant limped along as I went out of town, only to come back and revive it at the last possible moment. I ended the season having enjoyed exactly five juicy little tomatoes. But they were undoubtedly delicious—sun warmed and bursting with flavor. As I've seen more people in my online universe talk both jokingly and semi-seriously about curating a vegetable garden of their own in particularly insecure times, I thought it might be a nice occasion to brush up on a few tips and tricks in caring for your own little collection of pots and planters with the help of Corey Blant, the director of urban agriculture at New York Restoration Project (a program which, fun fact, was founded by Bette Midler in 1995). NYRP works in partnership with communities all over New York City to create and preserve community gardens and green spaces.
It's never too late to start
Each winter, I tell myself that I'll start early on my planting projects, but the reality is life often gets in the way of planting seeds early in the season. The good news, according to Blant, is that it's never too late to start on something. 'Not two hours ago, I planted zucchini from seed at a garden in Astoria,' he tells me over FaceTime, his face tan and his fingers dusty from a day in the soil. While he notes that at this point in the season, it's too late to plant delicate lettuces, it's prime time for squash, eggplant, and zucchini, all of which thrive in summer heat. Blant adds that herbs are a great option no matter what point in the season—'mint is going to be super vigorous, [as well as] sage and basil.' Come mid-August, you can even start to plant seeds for cold-loving veggies like cauliflower and kale.
If planting straight from seed is intimidating, head to your local hardware store and pick up a few starts (baby plants ready to go into the ground), which can be a little more forgiving. This year, I've set out my pots with a mix of tomatoes, habanero peppers, and basil, and despite the current temps climbing towards 100 degrees, I've been faithfully watering them and watching as my first little veggies begin to appear.
Make the most of what you have
Whether you have a backyard plot, a free stoop or a little space on your fire escape, make the most of your space. If you're building a garden in a yard, go for a raised bed with quality soil or compost. 'Start with that super high quality, super nutrient dense soil,' Blant says. Soil, sun, water… if you give the plants as much of that as possible, you're setting them up for success from the jump.'
On my stoop, I use a mix of pots that I've amassed over the year, using the bigger ones for plants that I know tend to take over, like tomatoes. Smaller pots house basil and herbs. I try to use pots that have holes in the bottom for drainage, along with a saucer to catch the water that tends to spill out when I douse them. I picked up soil from my local hardware store, and also take the chance to grab NYC-made compost when I come across it at a farmer's market or other local event (as an ardent composter, it's a full circle moment!).

Southwest Flight Forced Into Extreme Maneuver to Avoid Mid-Air Collision
A Southwest Airlines flight resorted to a sudden drop to avoid a mid-air traffic collision while departing from Burbank, Calif. The plane abruptly descended 475 feet to avoid a collision with a Hawker Hunter aircraft, ABC News reported. About six minutes after Southwest flight 1496 took off from Hollywood Burbank Airport, it abruptly descended from 14,100 feet to 13,625 feet. The flight was bound for Las Vegas. Steve Ulasewicz, a passenger on the flight, said he experienced a "significant drop," and told ABC News the pilot announced that they had performed the maneuver to "avoid a midair collision." "Southwest Airlines Flight 1496 responded to an onboard alert that another aircraft was in the vicinity while in Los Angeles Air Route Traffic Control Center airspace," the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement obtained by NBCLA. "The FAA is investigating the event that occurred around 11 a.m. local time on Friday, July 25." A spokesperson for Hollywood Burbank Airport told NBCLA authorities are "looking into the incident, however, there is currently no evidence that it occurred within the airspace above our airport." Southwest Airlines confirmed crew responded to onboard air traffic alerts after departing from Burbank. Two flight attendants were treated for injuries, but no one else was harmed. "The crew of Southwest Flight 1496 responded to two onboard traffic alerts Friday afternoon while climbing out of Burbank… requiring them to climb and descend to comply with the alerts," Southwest Airlines said in a statement obtained by NBCLA. "The flight continued to Las Vegas, where it landed uneventfully. Albuquerque Reliques: A statue on Fourth honoring pioneer women
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — At the corner of Fourth Street and Marble Avenue, there's a statue that's been standing for nearly 100 years. The piece aims to honor the pioneering women of the early 1900s. The Lew Wallace chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Trails Association donated 'Madonna of the Trail' to the city back in 1928. It was adopted by the city's public art program 70 years later. During this time, the piece underwent some conservation work. Albuquerque Reliques is a web series taking a look at landmarks, art, and oddities in the area. Pt I. – Pt. II – Story behind the 'Transformers' sculptures downtown Pt. III – A mural at Civic Plaza representing resiliency Pt. IV – Pt. V – Downtown hawk sculpture symbolizing the west Pt. VI – A faux dinosaur fossil installation in a west side arroyo Pt. VII – An Old Town chapel 'From my understanding, it was a mission of specifically the Daughters of the American Revolution, the National Trails Association, to honor women who were pioneers during this time,' said City of Albuquerque Public Art Outreach Coordinator Mandolen Sanchez. 'And so, you know, they wanted these monuments kind of along the country in different spots. And so this was an area they identified and were interested in sharing it.' The statue showcases a woman in a bonnet and a dress with boots, carrying two children. It was created by Architect August Leimbach out of Algonite stone. The statue is one of 12 placed along Route 40 from Maryland, to California. On the side of the statue, there's a passage which reads — 'Into the primitive west,Face upflung toward the she came,Her children beside she made them a home,Beautiful pioneer mother!' A time capsule is buried in the same area as the statue. The capsule was initially buried in 1928, then replaced during the statue conservation work in 1998. 'They did find the time capsule when they moved the piece. And a lot of the materials had been kind of damaged by water and just the environment. It wasn't sealed completely,' said Sanchez. 'But, you know, that did give an opportunity for, in the 1998 move, to do a new time capsule that is part of that.' The time capsule includes original items from 1928, such as a padlock from a memory box placed by the Daughters of the American Revolution, an Albuquerque Journal article, and a 1928 silver dollar. There are also new additions, such as a beanie baby and Balloon Fiesta pins. The capsule is expected to be opened in 2048. The City of Albuquerque has mostly moved away from monuments/memorials as public art pieces. 'Because there are so many other avenues for people to fund projects like that and, you know, dedicate them to individuals or larger communities,' said Sanchez. 'And so, you know, I think it's a balancing of having public art funds be available for artists for other projects as well.' Albuquerque officials discuss moving historic diner to Route 66 Visitor Center
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – For some it's a childhood memory, 'I grew up there. I remember that diner like I mean growing up, we walked by it, we ate at it, we did everything because it was part of our community,' said one member during a Route 66 Visitor Center Commission meeting. The traveling Valentine Diner, known as the Little House Diner, has moved around the city from places like Downtown to Nob Hill. And now, the city will decide its future with this goal in mind, 'To fulfill the original intent of the donation by the Hernandez family, which was to preserve it and celebrate its individual history,' said Shelle Sanchez, Director of Arts and Culture with CABQ. The proposal is to move the diner from Nob Hill, where it's being repurposed as a police substation, to the Route 66 Visitors Center, where it will be restored as a functioning diner. 'To me, what has happened with the diner is a disgrace,' said one member of the commission about the adjustment made to its original design. 'Their vision was for it to be in a prominent place, and I don't feel like out here is in a prominent place,' said one Hernandez family member. Members of the Hernandez family questioned the newly formed Route 66 Visitor Center Commission about whether people would actually go to the location on the outskirts of town. 'We kind of want it to be used the way they wanted it to be used, and I don't get that impression from, you know, putting it out here,' said one Hernandez family member. A Larry Barker investigation revealed that the city spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to furnish the building without proper oversight. Three years after its ribbon-cutting, the building still isn't open to the public. The city said this could change by the end of the summer, as they are in the process of hiring staff for the center. They believe that with a sign park coming this fall, the center will pick up traction. 'We actually are very optimistic about the number of people that will come here,' said Sanchez. Nob Hill's Neighborhood Association said they will be disappointed if the diner is relocated, saying, 'The little diner is dear to our hearts. It's been there 28 years.' Members with Nob Hill Main Street expressed support for the project, saying, 'If there's a place where this Valentine diner can be properly showcased, then that should be what happens.'
