Mark Zuckerberg's $99,000 purple watch gets its distinct color from heat-treating titanium

You might've missed one of Mark Zuckerberg's latest watches.
The Meta CEO wore a striking purple timepiece last month while announcing new Oakley Meta glasses.
The DB28xs Purple Rain from De Bethune originally sold for $99,000 when it was released in 2024.
Mark Zuckerberg added a splash of color to his multimillion-dollar watch collection earlier this summer.
The Meta CEO was seen sporting an eye-catching purple watch in June in an Instagram post announcing Oakley Meta glasses.

A closer look shows it's the DB28xs Purple Rain from Swiss watchmaker De Bethune.
When it was released in 2024, the watch, a limited edition of 25, was priced at $99,000.
On the resale market, it can fetch $100,000 to $120,000, depending on condition, Eugene Tutunikov, CEO of SwissWatchExpo, told Business Insider.
Joshua Ganjei, CEO of European Watch Company, said this De Bethune isn't your typical luxury piece.
"It's not a mainstream flex—it's a connoisseur's statement," Ganjei told Business Insider. "Seeing someone like Zuck embrace such a niche, design-forward piece speaks volumes about his evolving taste and the growing influence of independent haute horology."
The science behind the watch's color is fascinating: It's made using the thermal oxidation of titanium metal, getting its striking purple shade from the heat released by the chemical reactions of heated titanium.
This isn't the first time Zuckerberg has been seen sporting a piece from the high-end watchmaker. He wore a DB25 Starry Varius while speaking at a live taping of the "Acquired" podcast in San Francisco in September.
Zuckerberg's interest in watches appears to stem from an interaction he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, shared with Anant Ambani at Ambani's pre-wedding party in March 2024. Photos showed Zuckerberg and Chan admiring a Richard Mille watch worn by the Reliance Industries heir.
"You know, I never really wanted to get a watch, but after seeing that, I was like, watches are cool," Zuckerberg can be heard saying in a video of the interaction.
Zuckerberg's watch collection includes everything from a $120 Casio to a $900,000 Greubel Forsey. He's also been seen wearing pieces from Rolex, Patek Philippe, and F.P. Journe.

'No names': A brief moment in an interview with OpenAI engineers highlights the state of the AI talent wars

An OpenAI engineer said some of the company's "most-prized" talent is focused on debugging AI models — just don't expect him to mention their names. OpenAI chief data scientist Jakub Pachocki and Szymon Sidor, an OpenAI technical fellow, recently appeared on the "Before AGI" podcast and chatted about working at the company. A brief exchange in the episode stands out for what isn't said — and is an indicator of just how protective AI companies have become amid the AI talent wars, as Big Tech circles star employees. "We hired a bunch more people at OpenAI who are really great at debugging," Sidor said while speaking about the importance of debugging AI models. "And I think those are some of our most-prized employees, and I won't even…" Before Sidor could complete his thought (he mentions not going into "details"), another person on the podcast interjects by saying, "No names," before laughter can be heard. It's unclear who jumped in with "No names" — it was either OpenAI's Pachocki or podcast host Aleksander Mądry. While it would typically be easy to figure that out by watching the video version of the podcast, that part of the exchange is absent in both of the video versions published to YouTube and X. (You can hear that bit in the audio-only version on Spotify and Apple podcasts.) Business Insider reached out to Madry and OpenAI for comment. Mądry, the host of "Before AGI," is an MIT professor who is working at OpenAI while on leave from the university, where he is director of the MIT Center for Deployable Machine Learning. Regardless of why the exchange isn't found in the video version of the podcast (it's entirely possible the video version was simply edited down for length or flow or some other reason), Sidor's apparent reluctance to name-drop those employees he feels are some of OpenAI's "most-prized" is telling — if not particularly surprising. After all, Mark Zuckerberg reportedly created a list of names of AI stars to poach for Meta's Superintelligence Lab, and successfully hired away Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of ChatGPT and former lead scientist at OpenAI, and Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, among others. Sam Altman said earlier this year that Meta was offering his company's top researchers up to $100 million compensation packages, and Google recently hired away Windsurf's CEO and multiple employees who had been set to join OpenAI. It's an all-out fight over top AI talent — so it's understandable that an OpenAI engineer might want to be tight-lipped.

Eames Design Museum Plans Revealed at '60s-Era Warehouse in SF Bay Area

The Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosityhas unveiled the early plans for a new Eames Design Museum located in Novato, California, part of the San Francisco Bay Area. A collaboration between Swiss firmHerzog & De Meuronand SF-based EHDD, the museum will preserve elements of a pre-existing 1960s-era warehouse once occupied by McGraw-Hill and, recently, Birkenstock. The 'world-class' museum aims to offer the city a new cultural destination, hosting art and design exhibitions, workshops, educational programming, and, of course, a rotating display of the Eames Collection archives. Llisa Demetrios, a direct descendant of the Eameses and Chief Curator of the Eames Institute, expressed, 'To share my grandparents' vision with the world is the honor of a lifetime.' 'Ray and Charles's boundless curiosity for solving problems through design has been at the core of the Eames Institute's mission, and this expansion will allow us to share those gifts with our community on an even larger scale,' she added. A lauded modernist architect rooted in the Bay Area, John Savahe Bolles, designed the building for publisher McGraw-Hill in the 60s. The following tenant was footwear label Birkenstock, which used the site from 1994 to 2019. Over the decades, the building's distinct character has earned it a landmark status among design enthusiasts and locals. Boasting a sculptural rooftop feature, it represents the bold vision of mid-century design and its leading creators. As of the time of writing, the plans have not been finalized, but the institute has ensured that the building's defining characteristics (roof included) will be preserved. According to the advance estimate of the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annualized rate of 3% between April and June. This exceeded Bloomberg economists' forecast of 2.6% growth. But then, U.S. jobs data came in soft at the start of August. The previous months saw steep downward revisions, with June's growth slashed to 14,000 from 147,000 and May's lowered to 19,000 from 125,000, highlighting a more prolonged labor market slowdown than initially believed.
