Communications Ministry ready to help Pulau Berhala women become e-entrepreneurs
Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching said the women had acquired sewing skills through classes held at the Kampung Pulau Berhala Women's Community Centre, an initiative by Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee.
'It is time to create opportunities for these women to venture into e-commerce. With the island's reliable 4G coverage, they can market their products not only locally but also abroad if there is demand.
'If this initiative takes off, I can invite platforms like Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop to hold training sessions here to help the women learn how to sell their products online,' she told reporters after visiting the community centre with Vivian today.
Teo said the handcrafted products made by the Bajau women, including pillows, hair ribbons and traditional Bajau attire, had strong commercial potential.
Meanwhile, Vivian said the two-year effort to establish the community centre had paid off, with local women showing keen interest in the sewing activities offered there.
'We want Pulau Berhala women to become financially independent. Besides sewing classes, we plan to introduce lessons in cooking, traditional pastry making and batik painting. We have already identified instructors willing to teach,' she said.
Housewife Rina Rameo Abdullah, 51, said the centre had greatly benefited her by helping her develop sewing skills and earn income while spending her time productively.
'I sew traditional Bajau attire known as 'Sablai'. In the early morning, I sell kuih, and after that, I come to the centre to sew clothes that are worn during festive occasions,' she said.
Rina also welcomed the government's readiness to help promote their handmade products.
During her visit to Pulau Berhala, Teo also presented 50 food baskets sponsored by YTL Corporation Berhad to local residents.

Clean water now just a tap away for island community
SANDAKAN: Just a 10-minute boat ride from Sandakan, the small island of Pulau Berhala has finally received access to clean piped water for the first time. Home to around 3,000 residents, the largely Bajau fishing community had for generations relied on underground well water, which was often cloudy, salty and had to be boiled before use. Those who could afford it bought bottled mineral water for drinking while others simply made do. But that is now changing. A solar-powered nano-filtration system, the first of its kind in Sabah, is supplying the island with clean, treated water straight from the tap. 'We used well water for everything, from cooking to bathing, but had to buy bottled water for drinking,' said housewife Anna Robert, 25. 'If we didn't have money, we just drank the well water. Now, we can drink clean water straight from the tap. We're really grateful.' The RM1.3mil system was developed by Jetama Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sabah Development Bhd. It runs entirely on solar energy and filters groundwater to produce up to 45,000 litres of clean water daily, enough for 5,000 to 7,500 people, well beyond the island's population. Village chief Junior Jikirin said the new system had already transformed daily life. 'People here are happy and comfortable. It started running on July 19 and the water is clean like mineral water,' he said. Jetama Water executive director Liau Fui Fui said the project was designed specifically for remote communities like Pulau Berhala. 'This is a self-sustaining system that supplies clean water,' she said. 'We hope to install the remaining nine systems in areas that need them as soon as possible.' She added that the company evaluated various models before choosing a system from China for its cost-efficiency and suitability for rural maintenance. With the new solar filtration system installed and plans underway for solar-powered lighting in every home, residents say a long-awaited change has finally arrived. 'It might not seem like a big deal to others,' said Junior. 'But for us, it's life-changing.'

Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu drainage project ends decade-long flooding woes
KULAI: After enduring years of recurring floods, residents of Kampung Melayu Bukit Batu finally have reason to celebrate with the completion of a 190-metre concrete U-drain. Funded by a RM200,000 allocation, the project aims to resolve long-standing drainage issues that have plagued the low-lying area. Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching confirmed the drain's construction, which began in June, was financed through combined resources from the Ministry of Rural Development and the Ministry of Economy. 'This upgrade directly tackles the flooding that has burdened the community for a decade,' Teo stated during an inspection of the site. Flooding has been a persistent problem, with four incidents recorded this year alone. Residents previously appealed for urgent intervention, citing monthly disruptions since January. Clinic manager Juliana Boonadir, 43, shared her relief: 'We've lost so much to floods—this drain is the solution we've waited for.' Retiree Razman Hamzah, 64, echoed the sentiment, praising the government's responsiveness. 'Floods ruin furniture, especially wood. With this drain, water will recede faster,' he said. - Bernama

Teo warns public of RM100 SARA scam links asking for personal details
MUAR — The public is urged to remain vigilant against fraudulent links circulated by scammers related to the one-off RM100 cash assistance under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) initiative, which are designed to collect personal information, said Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching (picture). She said the scammers often employ deceptive tactics by sharing links accompanied by posters that appear convincing, incorporating official-looking elements such as the Malaysia MADANI and Bersama Malaysiaku logos to mislead recipients. 'One such example is the link which falsely claims to provide official information about the RM100 SARA aid and prompts users to submit their personal information. The Ministry of Finance confirmed yesterday that this link is fake,' she said. 'My advice is, if the information truly comes from the government, the link will typically end with '. – where 'gov' stands for government,' she told reporters after attending the MADANI Community Service programme held in conjunction with the launch of National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign here. She added that numerous complaints had been received regarding the matter, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had taken steps to block the fraudulent link. Teo said that such scams often evolve by creating new websites with similar names, such as ' or ' and urged the public to remain vigilant. She also stressed that no money will be deposited into e-wallets or Touch 'n Go accounts. Instead, eligible MyKad holders only need to present their identification cards at participating outlets, including Lotus's, Mydin, 99 Speedmart and selected grocery stores – to access the benefits. 'The primary role of the MyKad in this programme is solely to verify the identity of recipients. It has no connection to any e-wallet platform, so there's no need to worry if your MyKad isn't linked to certain applications,' Teo said. She also urged the public to rely only on official websites or verified social media accounts of government agencies, such as the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Communications for the latest and most accurate information. 'Our tagline for fake news is 'If you're not sure, don't share.' Today, I want to add: 'If you're not sure, don't click,'' she added. — BERNAMA
