Tejasvi Surya Demands Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line Opening In Lok Sabha Again Ahead Of Likely August Launch

News185 days ago
He urged the union government to intervene and expedite the launch of the Yellow Line, which connects Bengaluru's residential areas with the Electronic City. 'I want to request the union minister…the opening of the already delayed Yellow Line of the Bangalore Metro. This connects the residential part of Bengaluru to Electronic City. Once opened, more than 8 lakh people will travel in it every day. My request is to kindly open [it] as soon as possible," he said.
The 18.82-km elevated corridor from RV Road to Bommasandra has been ready for more than a year, but its launch was held up due to the delay in coach supply from Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), based in West Bengal. The line has received a safety certificate from the BMRCL, and a final inspection by the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) was to be completed.
Three trains, no drivers
Once operational, the Yellow Line will become the first driverless metro route in the city's prestigious IT corridor. Currently, BMRCL is preparing to launch it with just three six-coach trains, expected to run every 20 minutes—regardless of peak hours. While the line requires at least 14 trains for full-scale operations with a 15-minute frequency, only three are ready so far.
Civil works, including track laying and station construction, were completed last year in September. The first prototype driverless train arrived in April 2024 and underwent three months of testing. The second and third trainsets arrived in January and May this year. BMRCL is now targeting an August 15 opening, with limited operations planned at 20-minute intervals.
Two more coaches were dispatched from TRSL on July 28, forming part of the fourth trainset. Four more are ready and set to leave on Tuesday, which together will make up another full train.
The Yellow Line will link RV Road to Bommasandra with 16 stations, including key stops such as Infosys Foundation-Konappana Agrahara, Electronic City, Kudlu Gate, Bommanahalli, BTM Layout, Jayadeva Hospital, and Ragigudda.
'Why hide the fare hike report?'
Surya also took on the Congress-led state government and BMRCL for their refusal to release the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report behind the sharp metro fare hike earlier this year. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he said, 'Four months ago, BMRCL hiked the metro prices by 130 per cent. Public transport, especially services like the metro, must be affordable to the common man. This increase in fares has led to a deep and steep reduction in ridership."
'In the last four months, despite multiple requests, BMRCL has not made public the fare fixation report. This is a democracy—riders deserve the right to know on what basis the fares were increased by 130 per cent. My request to the minister is to instruct the officials of BMRCL to publish the fare fixation report immediately," the MP demanded.
Speaking to News18, Surya said, 'Why is the Congress government in Karnataka and BMRCL hiding the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC) report? The Karnataka government seems to be waging a war against public transport. This is not the first time a fare hike has been mandated by an FFC. The Delhi Metro has made at least four of its FFC reports public."
Earlier this month, Surya filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking the immediate release of the FFC report. The court has issued a notice to the Centre, the state government, and BMRCL.
His counsel told the court that three representations had been sent to BMRCL since December 2024, but the report remains undisclosed. 'The media have filed queries under the Right to Information Act. However, BMRCL has refused to reveal the report," the counsel argued.
'Mathematical gymnastics' and 'rollback drama'
This isn't the first time Surya has accused BMRCL of playing games. Earlier this year, in February, he had slammed what he called 'mathematical gymnastics" after BMRCL claimed to roll back fares following public backlash.
advetisement
Surya said in Parliament then that short-distance travel fares had doubled, making Bengaluru Metro the most expensive in the country. 'It defeats the very purpose of offering affordable and sustainable public transport to the middle class," he said.
Red Line stuck in red tape
Surya also pushed for approval of the proposed Red Line—part of Phase 3A of the Namma Metro network—which is awaiting a green signal from the union ministry of railways.

Trump's comments on India and its economy 'belittling, unacceptable': Anand Sharma

Congress leader and former commerce minister Anand Sharma on Monday asserted that US President Donald Trump's comments on India and its economy are "belittling and unacceptable", as he urged the government not to succumb to the American leader's "bullying tactics" to sign a "suboptimal" trade deal. In a statement, Sharma said India must uphold its sovereignty and supreme national interests and Parliament as well as leaders of all political parties must be taken in confidence on any understanding reached with the US. "President Trump has triggered an upheaval and caused unprecedented disruption in the world order by his utterances and actions. His comments on India and its economy are belittling and unacceptable," the Congress leader said. His remarks come days after Trump announced the imposition of 25 per cent tariff and penalties on India and called India and Russia "dead economies". Echoing Trump's criticism of the Indian economy, Rahul Gandhi had last week said everybody except Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman know that the country's economy is "dead". In his statement, Sharma said India has withstood pressures and threats in the past and emerged stronger. "President Trump is mistaken that India does not have options. As the fourth largest economy India has resilience and inherent strength to engage with the world on principles of equality and mutual respect," Sharma said. "Signing of a robust economic and trade agreement with the UK is most welcome. India should prioritise concluding India-EU Trade deal. It is equally important to engage with major trading blocs and regions: Africa Union, ASEAN, GCC and LAC to deepen market access and trade," Sharma said. He said the government must not succumb to Trump's "bullying tactics" to sign a "suboptimal" trade deal. "India must uphold its sovereignty and supreme national interests. Parliament and leaders of all political parties must be taken in confidence on any understanding reached with the US," Sharma said.

Adani Group denies report of battery tie-up with China's BYD, Welion

The Adani Group on Monday clarified that it was not in talks with Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD and battery maker Beijing Welion New Energy Technology for a potential collaboration in India. The statement came after Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources, reported that the Gautam Adani-led conglomerate was exploring a partnership with BYD to manufacture batteries in India as part of its clean energy expansion. An Adani Group spokesperson said: 'We categorically deny Bloomberg's report on 4 Aug 2025 suggesting a tie-up between the Adani Group and Chinese companies BYD and Beijing Welion New Energy Technology. This report is baseless, inaccurate and misleading." "The Adani Group is not exploring any form of collaboration with BYD for battery manufacturing in India. Similarly, we are not engaged in any discussions with Beijing Welion New Energy Technology for a partnership of any kind," the statement added. The Bloomberg report claimed that Adani was personally involved in the discussions, which it said had taken place as recently as last week. The report further claimed that any agreement would likely be routed through BYD's subsidiaries located in other countries, rather than its headquarters in Shenzhen, due to diplomatic tensions between India and China. The Adani Group is one of India's largest conglomerates with diversified interests across ports, power, renewable energy, airports, mining, data centres, and FMCG. While the Adani Group is not directly involved in the automobile sector now, it has shown interest in the electric mobility ecosystem through EV charging infrastructure and green hydrogen. In April 2024, Adani TotalEnergies E-Mobility Limited, a joint venture of Adani Group and French major TotalEnergies, announced that it was establishing EV charging networks across India, including agreements with Mahindra & Mahindra and MG Motor India to install DC charging points at dealerships and build large super-charging hubs. Shares of Adani Enterprises were trading at ₹2,369.35 apiece at 2.09 pm on the BSE on Monday.

ED summons top executives of Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group: Report

ANI ED has summoned Anil Ambani in Rs 17,000-crore loan fraud case on August 5. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday issued summons to several top executives of the Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group in connection with an ongoing money laundering investigation, a day before Ambani himself is slated to appear before the agency. According to ET Now, which cited sources familiar with the development, senior group executives including Amitabh Jhunjhunwala and Sateesh Seth are among those summoned. The ED has reportedly issued at least six summons under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) so far. All the executives had previously been subject to searches by the ED as part of its probe. The agency suspects that these individuals played key roles in orchestrating transactions that allegedly defrauded a consortium of Infrastructure shares were trading at Rs 296.15, down 4.99% on Monday at 1:51 PM. Meanwhile, Reliance Power's shares were down by 5.01% at the same time. An ET Bureau exclusive report on Monday revealed that the ED also plans to summon officials from nearly 20 public and private sector banks that had extended loans to various Reliance Group companies. The agency intends to question these officials on the due diligence exercised before sanctioning loans and the steps taken when repayments failed. 'We want to ascertain what action the banks took, if any, against the companies which defaulted. Did they lodge a complaint with any investigating agency, seeking registration of a criminal case against the companies?' a senior official told ET. According to the ET report, ED's line of inquiry will include understanding the credit assessment processes followed by lenders, many of whom are believed to have issued loans that later turned into non-performing assets. The money laundering investigation centres around alleged irregularities in loans worth approximately Rs 17,000 crore extended to three Reliance Group companies—Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL), Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL), and Reliance Communications (RCom). According to ED data cited by the ET report, RHFL owes over Rs 5,901 crore, RCFL Rs 8,226 crore, and RCom nearly Rs 4,105 crore to various lenders. Apart from Yes Bank, other financial institutions involved include State Bank of India, UCO Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Bank of India, and Punjab and Sind Bank. ET was the first to report on August 1 that the ED had summoned Anil Ambani for questioning. He is expected to appear at the ED headquarters in New Delhi on August 5. In a development linked to the case, the ED on Friday arrested Partha Sarathi Biswal, managing director of Odisha-based Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd (BTPL), for allegedly arranging a fake bank guarantee worth Rs 68 crore for a Reliance Group entity. The agency informed the court that Biswal had received Rs 5.40 crore from Reliance Power Ltd, parent company of Reliance Nu Bess Ltd, in return for the forged guarantee submitted for a tender floated by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI). According to the ED, documentary evidence indicates collusion between Biswal Tradelink and Reliance Nu Bess, contradicting the latter's claim of being defrauded. A senior official told ET, 'Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance Group.'The agency also recovered several incriminating documents and digital devices during its August 1 raids. It alleged that BTPL maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and conducted transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover, with "dummy directors" used to facilitate Delhi Police FIR in the case was initially based on a complaint by Reliance Nu Bess, accusing BTPL of fraud. However, ED officials now believe the two firms may have been jointly involved in the a statement issued Friday, the Reliance Group maintained that it acted 'bonafidely' and was itself a 'victim of fraud, forgery, and cheating conspiracy.' The group stated it had made due disclosures to stock exchanges in November 2024 and had lodged a criminal complaint against the third party with the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing in October 2024.
