On the opening day, fast bowlers Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue led England's bowling attack as India struggled to 204/6 at stumps in the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval in London. Atkinson claimed 2/31 on his home ground, while Tongue took 2/47, with Karun Nair remaining unbeaten on 52 in a match India needs to win to level the five-Test series 2-2.
Atkinson not only took crucial wickets but also executed a run-out of India captain Shubman Gill. Tongue, despite bowling inconsistently, delivered two exceptional balls that resulted in key dismissals.
England's stand-in captain Ollie Pope, replacing the injured Ben Stokes, chose to bowl first under overcast conditions on a green-tinged pitch after winning the toss.
Atkinson struck early, dismissing left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for two runs through an lbw decision confirmed on review.

Chris Woakes then removed KL Rahul, who had amassed over 500 runs in the series, for 14 when the opener played on while attempting to cut a ball too close to his body.
Gill, who has scored four centuries in his first series as captain, needed 53 more runs to break Sunil Gavaskar's record of 774 runs in a Test series against West Indies in 1971. However, he was run out for 21 by Atkinson's direct hit while attempting a risky single.
Sai Sudharsan's patient innings of 38 from 108 balls ended when he edged Tongue's delivery to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, one of four Surrey players in the England team.
Ravindra Jadeja, who had scored a crucial century in the previous Test at Old Trafford, fell for just nine runs, caught behind by Smith off Tongue's bowling.
Dhruv Jurel, replacing injured wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, was caught by Harry Brook at second slip off Atkinson for 19, reducing India to 153-6.
Washington Sundar, who scored his maiden Test century in the drawn fourth Test at Old Trafford, remained unbeaten on 19 alongside Nair at stumps.

Jerry Jones finally responds to Micah Parsons' trade demand with a six-word message to Cowboys fans
Tensions rise in Dallas as Jerry Jones responds to Parsons trade drama with cryptic six words (Imagn Images) The Dallas Cowboys are once again the center of offseason chaos, and this time, it's their defensive star, Micah Parsons, stirring the storm. Amid ongoing frustration over stalled contract talks, the two-time All-Pro linebacker formally requested a trade—sending a clear message that patience has run out. But just as quickly, team owner Jerry Jones stepped in to calm the rising tension, insisting there's no reason to panic. Trade demand from Micah Parsons met with strong six-word response from Jerry Jones When Parsons released a strongly worded statement on Friday—publicly acknowledging a March meeting with Jones that pivoted from leadership to contract talk—things got real. He noted that while he deferred discussions to his agent, the Cowboys had failed to respond with any negotiations. That, it seems, was the breaking point. 'I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleep over this,' Jones told reporters at training camp on Saturday, via Nick Harris of the Star-Telegram. His response, though brief, was aimed at cooling the emotional wave sweeping Cowboys Nation. Jones doubled down, saying he still isn't considering a trade, despite the very public fallout. What's unfolding is not unfamiliar territory in the NFL . Trade demands have become a modern leverage tactic, especially for elite players wanting long-term security. But for Cowboys fans, the revolving door of media spectacles can feel like a never-ending carousel. Parsons isn't just any player either—he's the cornerstone of the Cowboys' defense. With 52.5 career sacks in four seasons and a league-tied fifth-best 12 sacks last year, his production is nothing short of elite. Losing a player of his caliber isn't an option, and Jones knows it. What happens next for Dallas and their star defender? Although Jones insists there's no cause for concern, the fact remains that Parsons has officially put the team on notice. And while Jones pointed out, 'Micah took it off the table' when asked about the March discussion, the clock is now ticking louder than ever. If recent NFL history is any guide, this story likely ends with Parsons getting the massive deal he desires. But until ink meets paper, fans might find it hard to sleep easy—despite Jones' reassuring words. The Cowboys may not be trading Parsons, but the tension? That's here to stay. NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Predicted to Part Ways with $54 Million Superstar to Improve Squad Around Luka and LeBron
Luka Doncic and LeBron James (Image via Joe Murphy/ Getty Images) As Luka Doncic gears up for his first full season with the Los Angeles Lakers , the franchise appears poised to make bold decisions in pursuit of an 18th NBA title. One of those decisions could involve parting ways with rising star Austin Reaves. Luka Doncic's Growing Influence in LA The 26-year-old Doncic has quickly become the centerpiece of the Lakers' future, and his influence was evident in the team's major offseason moves. His presence played a key role in landing both Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton - two players expected to play significant roles in the 2025–26 campaign. Now, with a win-now mindset guiding the franchise, the Lakers are evaluating every asset on their roster. That includes 26-year-old Austin Reaves, who, despite deliveringhis best season yet, may not fit seamlessly alongside Doncic in the long run. The Case for Trading Austin Reaves Reaves averaged a career-high in nearly every major statistical category last season, emerging as a fringe All-Star. Austin Reaves 2024–25 Regular Season Stats Austin Reaves (Image via Getty) Category Stat Points 20.2 PPG Assists 5.8 APG Rebounds 4.5 RPG 3-Point Percentage 37.7% 3PA per game 7.3 Games Played 73 However, his evolution into a ball-dominant tertiary option has occasionally taken possessions away from Doncic - an issue that could grow as the team solidifies its identity around the Slovenian star. Maxwell Ogden of FanSided argued that Reaves' development may soon become a luxury the Lakers can no longer afford: 'If Reaves can't take the next step and justify the nine-figure contract he's likely to sign in 2026, then the Lakers need to trade him by the February deadline,' Ogden wrote. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria Principal Is Almost 75, See Her Now Reportingly Undo 'It's unfair on some levels, but Doncic is looking to win now, and Reaves is their most tradable asset.' Why Reaves Could Be on the Block Despite being undrafted, Reaves has elevated his game to the verge of All-Star status. Yet, his skill set - while impressive - is starting to overlap with Doncic's responsibilities as the primary initiator. Factors Supporting a Potential Trade • Redundant Play Styles: Both Reaves and Doncic operate best with the ball in their hands. • Future Contract Concerns: Reaves is expected to command a nine-figure extension by 2026. • Roster Flexibility: Trading Reaves could help the Lakers acquire a better stylistic fit or multiple rotational pieces. • Doncic's Timeline: Every move now hinges on delivering a title while Doncic is in his prime. Ogden emphasized that Reaves' value might be the key to fulfilling Doncic's expectations: 'Reaves is the player and contract who will ultimately decide if the Lakers can honor Doncic's request to win now.' Reaves may have more room to blossom as a lead guard elsewhere, potentially even earning an All-Star nod on a team built around him. For the Lakers, though, the priority is clear: build the best possible supporting cast around Doncic. And that might mean making tough calls - even if it involves letting go of a fan favorite and breakout performer.
