Amazing 15-Million-Year-Old Fish Fossil Found in The Australian Desert
Just a few years after uncovering a trove of exceptionally preserved fossils, paleontologists have now described a brand new fish species that lived and died during the Miocene, 15 million years ago.
So perfectly intact is this animal that a team of paleontologists led by Matthew McCurry of the Australian Museum Research Institute could determine its coloration. They could even see what at least one specimen devoured for its last meal – the contents of which were still in its stomach after millions of years trapped in the iron-rich rocks of the fossil bed.
The fish has been named Ferruaspis brocksi, after paleontologist Jochen Brocks of the Australian National University, who discovered several specimens of the fossilized fish at McGraths Flat.
"This little fish is one of the most beautiful fossils I've found at McGraths Flat, and finding the first vertebrate among the abundant plant and insect fossils was a real surprise," Brocks says. "This discovery opens new avenues for understanding the evolutionary history of Australia's freshwater fish species and ancient ecosystems."
Fossilization is an intense process that often involves pressure and heat – it's not kind on bone, never mind soft tissue. For an organism to be fossilized after it dies is rare. For soft tissue to survive is rarer still. Fossil beds in which the preservation level is so exquisite that soft tissue and fine details remain are known as Lagerstätten.
McGraths Flat is one such Lagerstätte, a formation of an iron-rich rock called goethite in which fossils were so intricately captured that structures smaller than a cell can be discerned. It was in this bed that Brocks found several beautiful fish of a species never seen before, and a family never found fossilized in Australia, freshwater smelt.
"The discovery of the 15 million-year-old freshwater fish fossil offers us an unprecedented opportunity to understand Australia's ancient ecosystems and the evolution of its fish species," McCurry explains.
"This fossil is part of the Osmeriforms fish family – a diverse group of fish species within Australia that includes species like the Australian grayling and the Australian smelt. But, without fossils it has been hard for us to tell exactly when the group arrived in Australia and whether they changed at all through time."
Because the fish specimens were so well preserved, the researchers were able to make observations about their lifestyle. F. brocksi was an opportunistic feeder that mostly dined on invertebrates; stomach contents included insect wings and a partial bivalve shell.
However, the most abundant ingredient was the larvae of midges – tiny flying insects that lay their eggs in water, where the larvae grow until they are ready to enter their adult life stage.
"One of the fossils even shows a parasite attached to the tail of the fish," McCurry says. "It's a juvenile freshwater mussel called a glochidium. These juvenile mussels attach themselves to the gills or tails of fish to hitch rides up and down streams."
Using a powerful microscope, the researchers were even able to make out tiny, subcellular structures in the skin of the fish, called melanosomes, which give tissues their pigment. These revealed that the fish were darker on their backs, or dorsal sides, and paler on their tummies, or ventral sides. They even had two dark stripes running down the length of their bodies, near the spinal column.
"Fossilized melanosomes have previously enabled paleontologists to reconstruct the color of feathers," marvels paleontologist Michael Frese of the University of Canberra and CSIRO, "but melanosomes have never been used to reconstruct the color pattern of a long extinct fish species."
The McGraths Flat fossils have much to offer us yet. The researchers have described a wonderful 'giant' trapdoor spider discovered therein, but there are multitudinous other fossils from the site, including plants, insects, and even a bird feather that has not yet been formally described.
"The fossils found at this site formed between 11 and 16 million years ago and provide a window into the past," McCurry says. "They prove that the area was once a temperate, wet rainforest and that life was rich and abundant in the Central Tablelands."
The research has been published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

This Aussie bug is breaking records — and possibly a few branches. Scientists have discovered a hefty new species of stick insect in a remote Australian rainforest, and it could be the heaviest ever found in the country. The little bugger, of the new Acrophylla alta species, weighs 1.55 ounces – about the weight of a golf ball – and is 15.75 inches long. Experts are surprised by how unusually heavy the creature is, which was discovered in the town of Millaa Millaa in Queensland's Atherton Tablelands. 'There are longer stick insects out there [in the region], but they're fairly light bodied,' Angus Emmott of James Cook University, who helped identify the species, said in a release on the school's website. 'From what we know to date, this is Australia's heaviest insect.' The new species was named Acrophylla alta. fox8 Its heaviness could be a product of an evolutionary response. 'It's a cool, wet environment where they live,' Emmott explained. 'Their body mass likely helps them survive the colder conditions, and that's why they've developed into this large insect over millions of years.' Male leopard seals compose and sing their own songs to woo potential mating partners, scientists in Australia have found. The songs are structured much like nursery rhymes, making them easy to remember. "It kind of sounds like sound effects from an '80s sci-fi" movie, the lead author of the study said. When male leopard seals dive down into icy Antarctic waters, they sing songs structured like nursery rhymes in performances that can last up to 13 hours, scientists said Thursday. The Australian-led team of researchers compared the complexity of the songs composed by the big blubbery mammals to those of other animals -- as well as human musicians like the Beatles and Mozart. Lucinda Chambers, a bioacoustics PhD student at Australia's University of New South Wales, told AFP that people are often surprised when they hear the "otherworldly" hoots and trills sung by leopard seals. "It kind of sounds like sound effects from an '80s sci-fi" movie, said the lead author of a new study in the journal Scientific Reports. During the spring breeding season, male leopard seals dive underwater and perform their songs for two minutes before returning to the surface for air. They then repeat this performance for up to 13 hours a day, according to the study. The researchers determined that all leopard seals share the same set of five "notes" which are impossible to distinguish between individuals. However each seal arranges these notes in a unique way to compose their own personal song. "We theorise that they're using that structure as a way to broadcast their individual identity, kind of like shouting their name out into the void," Chambers said. The researchers believe the males use these songs to woo potential female mates -- and ward off rivals. 'Songbirds of the ocean' The team studied recordings of 26 seals captured by study co-author Tracey Rogers off the coast of Eastern Antarctica throughout the 1990s. "They're like the songbirds of the Southern Ocean," Rogers, who is also from the University of New South Wales, said in a statement. "During the breeding season, if you drop a hydrophone into the water anywhere in the region, you'll hear them singing." The team analysed how random the seals' sequences of notes were, finding that their songs were less predictable than the calls of humpback whales or the whistles of dolphins. But they were still more predictable than the more complex music of the Beatles or Mozart. "They fall into the ballpark of human nursery rhymes," Chambers said. This made sense, because the songs need to be simple enough so that each seal can remember their composition to perform it every day, she explained. She compared it to how "nursery rhymes have to be predictable enough that a child can memorise them". But each seal song also needs to be unpredictable enough to stand out from those of the other males. Leopard seals, which are the apex predator in Antarctic waters, swim alone and cover vast distances. They likely evolved their particular kind of song so that their message travels long distances, the researchers theorised. Varying pitch or frequency might not travel as far in their environment, Chambers said. Female seals also sing sometimes, though the scientists do not know why. Chambers suggested it could be to teach their pups how to sing -- exactly how this talent is passed down is also a mystery. But she added that this behaviour has never been observed in the wild.
