Tamil actor Srikanth arrested for allegedly buying cocaine from drug cartel

The Hindu23-06-2025
Tamil film actor Srikanth, also known as Sriram Krishnamachari, 46, was arrested on Monday by the Nungambakkam police of the Greater Chennai Police for allegedly buying cocaine from a drug cartel. The cartel includes a Nigerian national who was recently arrested. The authorities are on the lookout for actor Krishna, who is believed to be in Kerala.
A senior police officer confirmed the arrest and said Srikanth had been in regular contact with three drug offenders arrested recently. 'Our investigation revealed that he procured and consumed cocaine... Further investigation is under way,' the officer said.
Srikanth made his big screen acting debut in the 2002 Tamil film Roja Kootam. He has also starred in notable films like April Maadhathil (2002), Parthiban Kanavu (2003), Okariki Okaru (2003), and the Tamil remake of 3 Idiots, titled Nanban (2012). Srikanth has received multiple awards, including Nandi Awards and Filmfare Awards.
To combat drug-trafficking, the Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) operates under the supervision of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun. It gathers intelligence on ganja and synthetic drugs, identifies offenders and networks, and works with local police stations to make arrests.
On June 17, based on the ANIU's inputs, the Nungambakkam police arrested Pradeep Kumar, alias Prado, 38, of Sankari in Salem, and John, 38, a Ghanaian national, after they were found in possession of 11 grams of cocaine. During interrogation, Pradeep said he had supplied drugs to T. Prasad, a dismissed AIADMK functionary, who sold the cocaine to Srikanth at a Nungambakkam pub last month.
Brawl at bar
Prasad, along with his associates, had been arrested earlier in connection with a brawl at a bar. Further investigation revealed that he had also been involved in a job racket, cheating a Hyderabad businessman. Police sources said Prasad had worked in film production with Srikanth and the latter frequently socialised with the offenders.
The police searched Srikanth's residence in the Nungambakkam Lake Area, where cocaine in small quantities was allegedly seized. On Monday morning, Srikanth was detained for questioning and then arrested after his blood test came back positive for narcotics. He was examined at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
Sourced from Bengaluru
The cocaine was reportedly sourced from Bengaluru through Pradeep and John, who purchased it for ₹7,000 per gram and sold it in Chennai for ₹12,000.
Mr. Arun has directed the ANIU and the local law enforcement agencies to intensify surveillance and crack down on organised narcotics trafficking. Investigations are under way to apprehend other individuals linked to the syndicate.

‘20 to 30 bullets fired': Utah ISKCON temple targeted in suspected hate crime

The ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah, renowned globally for hosting the annual Holi Festival, has come under attack in a suspected hate crime, with over two dozen bullets fired at the premises over several days, causing significant structural damage. Bullet mark on a part of the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork, Utah.(X/ ISKCON) According to ISKCON, 20 to 30 bullets were fired at the temple building and surrounding property during night time hours while devotees and guests were inside. The incident resulted in thousands of dollars in damage, including to the temple's intricately hand-carved arches. Condemning the attack, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco expressed solidarity with the community and urged swift action. In a post on X, it stated, "We strongly condemn the recent firing incident at the ISKCON Sri Sri Radha Krishna temple in Spanish Fork, Utah. The Consulate extends full support to all the devotees and the community and urges the local authorities to take prompt action to bring the perpetrators to justice." A similar incident had occurred earlier this year when, on March 9, a Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu temple in Chino Hills, California, was found desecrated just days ahead of a so-called 'Khalistani referendum' in Los Angeles, according to temple authorities. The official page of BAPS for the United States shared the details of the March 9 desecration on the social media platform X and emphasised the community's resilience. "In the face of another Mandir desecration, this time in Chino Hills, CA, the Hindu community stands steadfast against hate... Our common humanity and faith will ensure that peace and compassion prevail," BAPS Public Affairs wrote. The Coalition of Hindus of North America (CoHNA) also pointed to the incident on X, linking it to rising anti-Hindu sentiment and noting that the vandalism came shortly before the planned 'Khalistan referendum' in Los Angeles. "Another Hindu Temple vandalised, this time the iconic BAPS temple in Chino Hills, CA... Not surprisingly, this happens as the day for a so-called 'Khalistan referendum' in LA draws close," CoHNA posted, while listing other recent temple attacks since 2022 and calling for an investigation. Last year, acts of vandalism also targeted the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Sacramento, California, on the night of September 25. That incident followed closely after a similar attack on a BAPS temple in New York. Messages such as "Hindus go back" were found scrawled during those attacks, deeply alarming the local Hindu community. Despite repeated provocations, community leaders continue to affirm their unity and commitment to confronting hate.

Southern cinema still sizzles with age-old glamour

At an age when stars of the earlier era were either sent packing or decided to move away from the limelight to foray into politics, in sharp contrast, the modern day 60 - and beyond matinee idols in south India still seem to be in great demand. Across the country, Amitabh Bachchan at 82 may not be the 'one-man industry' he was four decades back but he has enough on his plate to make him rise and shine on a daily basis. His juniors, who began a few years later in the distant peninsula have done much better. They still command huge salaries, have the best banners tying up with them on a consistent basis, dabble in all genres – from sci-fi to socio-political dramas – and have young heroines, as old as their daughters, jive with them in dream locations across the world. Herogiri for them thus is a permanent occupation, one surmises. From the most popular Kamal-Rajini duo in Tamil cinema, Mohanlal- Mammootty in Malayalam, the lone ranger Shivaraj Kumar in Kannada to the quartet of Chiranjeevi- Venkatesh-Nagarjuna and Balakrishna in mana Telugu states, none seems to be wanting to stay away from the greasepaint and glamour of moviedom. Even as in the last 15 years, these stars touched the senior citizen status but continued to churn out their staple fare for their fans, spread across three generations. The box-office response may not have always been kind as also the reactions of the hyperactive social media, which has captured the central spot in determining how the initial weekend of the film's performance, post-release would pan out. Yet, all these heroes are fighting fit to stay in the race with their younger counterparts, who have had to share their directors and tech teams with them, not to speak of the glamour girls, who don't mind being labelled an old man's girl by the cheeky new gen. Huge budgets running into hundreds of crores are avowedly invested in shaping up the celluloid creations of these titans, who still retain maximum screen space and the best of the scenes to keep their fans as excited as ever. Rather brazenly many of them justify the ordinary storylines their films are made of, even going to the extent of making their ventures as multi-starrers, to further derisk the project and keep the production houses this arrangement has suited only these 10-odd vintage heroes of southern cinema. The directors with whom they had given many blockbusters earlier are not given such comfortable timelines to stay the course in cinema if their films bomb at the box-office. The recent examples of directors like showman Shankar and methodical Mani Ratnam, who overestimated their potential and delivered massive duds featuring these stars is a case in point. Even if it is a derated, diluted version of their carefully- crafted onscreen persona, these heroes seem content staying in that ecosystem hardly venturing out to try experimental or experiential cinema. With the total chain of business, dreaming of profit from these movies, like satellite channels, digital media and the ever-growing chain of multiplexes, these legends are cogs in the giant wheel of entertainment and nothing else. The box-office is still their El Dorado, for sure.

Tamil Nadu cop booked for sexual assault of minor girl

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police have registered a Pocso Act case against an armed reserve (AR) sub inspector (SI) based on the statement of an eight-year-old girl. Meanwhile, after the SI's family filed a complaint against the girl's family stating that the complaint against the SI was false, a CSR has been registered, a police officer said. According to the complaint from the minor girl's family, the girl was living with her father and grandfather after her parents' separation. She was found unconscious at the SI's house on Sunday evening after she went missing while playing with friends. The complaint adds that a friend told the family she was last seen near the SI's house. The girl alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted. Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the complaint may be linked to an ongoing dispute with the SI. He added that even though there seems to be no sexual assault, based on initial reports, a case has been registered as the child has given a statement.
