Ship pulled free after running aground near Norway home
Salvagers yesterday pulled a cargo ship, which made world headlines for running aground a stone's throw from a house in Norway, back into the water, the head of the company managing the operation said.
A Ukrainian sailor in his 30s was on watch at the time and said he had fallen asleep, according to Norwegian police, who have charged him with 'negligent navigation'.
The NCL Salten sailed up onto shore just metres from a wooden house around dawn on Thursday.
'It's good to have said hello, but now it's time to say goodbye' the occupant of the house, Johan Helberg, told broadcaster NRK on Tuesday.
The containers on the ship, except for those removed to lighten the bow, are still on board and will be unloaded this evening, Ole T. Bjornevik, the managing director of BOA Offshore told AFP, adding that the operation only lasted 30 minutes. 'She has just been refloated,' and an inspection is underway, he added.
The Ukrainian seaman has said none of the cargo ship's collision alarms had worked, prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sorensen told news agency NTB.
The investigation will also look into whether the rules on working hours and rest periods were adhered to on ship, according to police.
Helberg, also slept through the incident and only discovered the unexpected visitor when a panicked neighbour called him on the phone.
None of the 16 crew members were injured.

Fraud probe opened into Mbappe payments to police officers
AFP | Paris An investigation has been opened into potentially fraudulent payments made by Kylian Mbappe to five police officers assigned to protect the French national football team, the public prosecutor's office said. The probe comes after a tip-off from the French finance ministry's antimoney laundering unit, which reported 'unusual financial transactions' benefitting the five police officers. 'Investigations, which are by their very nature complex in the case of financial transactions, are underway in order to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed,' the public prosecutor's office said. French investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaine on Wednesday reported that the France national team captain's money was used to 'pay under the table for private services', to the tune of 180,300 euros ($209,000). The Real Madrid striker's entourage issued a statement saying 'everything was done in compliance with the rules'. It added that Mbappe had 'always chosen to donate in full his bonuses' for playi n g for France at international level. 'It's what he did after the 2022 World Cup, with complete transparency,' the statement continued, saying the money went to charitable organisations and security personnel that accompanied the team.

Russia seizes $150 mn cocaine haul hidden in banana shipment
Russia said Wednesday it had seized 820 kilograms (1,800 pounds) of cocaine hidden under a shipment of bananas, calling it its largest bust of drugs from Latin America this year. Cocaine smuggling into Russia has surged over the past two years, according to Russia's Izvestia newspaper. Drug traffickers are increasingly looking to the country as a transit hub, in part because the Ukrainian port of Odesa has become inaccessible due to Russia's offensive, the paper said. Russia's customs service, working jointly with the FSB security service, said it had uncovered a batch worth 'more than 12 billion rubles ($153 million)' stashed in banana containers. The cocaine packages -- disguised in briquettes bearing the label of a French luxury fashion brand -- were discovered in a 'hidden cavity' under the bananas, it added. It carried out the bust after a tip-off from 'foreign colleagues about the intention of a South American criminal group to organise a smuggling channel for cocaine supplies to Russia'.
