Hero officer who ended samurai killer rampage had 'no time for fear'
A police officer who confronted sword killer Marcus Monzo after he murdered 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin in east London has praised his 'undoubtedly heroic' colleagues for stopping Monzo's rampage.
Inspector Moloy Campbell's hand was sliced open by Monzo's blade while attempting to bring him down with pepper spray and a baton on April 30 last year.
Monzo, 37, who was convicted of murder this week, had nearly decapitated Daniel, attacked a couple in their home and repeatedly slashed first-responder PC Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield.
Inspector Campbell and his sergeant drove to the scene after the injured officer's colleague radioed for help.
He said: 'As we were heading to the incident my sergeant was driving and I was in the operator seat.
'As we heard that transmission, 'police officer stabbed, police officer stabbed', I turned to him and said: 'Just get us there, don't speed up, don't let red mist get to you. We need to get there and get control of this incident'.'

Inspector Campbell confronted Monzo in a car park and ran at him with his baton drawn, a scene captured by police bodycam.
He continued: 'There was no time for fear. That is not a reflection of bravery of me or anyone else, it's a fact, there was no time for that.
'There is a job to be done and there was an objective that needed to be met and that was, as I say, the preservation of life.
'At that point there was no help coming. Armed police were coming but they were 10, 15 minutes away and that's far too long in that situation.
'That's not the fault of my colleagues, it's just the way it played out on that morning.
'It was a case of doing what I thought needed to be done. It was a decision of do we contain the defendant or do we confront.
'The decision was to confront because I felt had we done anything else then more members of the public and potentially police officers would have been seriously injured or worse.'
Inspector Campbell described how Monzo slashed at him with the sword, splitting his hand so wide open that his thumb was 'hanging down' and he could see the inside of his flesh.
He then withdrew while colleagues, who had just arrived, applied a tourniquet and attempted to rejoin the fray before going into shock.
The other officers then managed to bring Monzo down using tasers.
Inspector Campbell has said he does not see himself as a hero but said otherwise about his team, who 'did what we do every day'.
He added: 'I think to describe yourself as a hero would be slightly distasteful. I think they know what I think of them in terms of whether they are a hero or not.
'I'm proud of them every day and they needed no supervision nor direction to chase down a man with a sword. That should speak volumes.
'But right now as I speak there is probably a police officer somewhere in the country chasing someone with a knife or something else.
'What we saw in Hainault was extraordinary circumstances in the way it turned out but it's not unusual to have someone running round with a knife at 7am. It's not unusual at all.
'They regularly turn out from parade and go on blue lights having been asleep two hours ago and switch into that mode.'
Witnesses described Monzo dropping to his knees with both arms raised while screaming 'in delight' after killing Daniel.
He claimed he was in the grip of a psychotic episode which made him believe an event 'like Armageddon' was happening, and had no memory of events after leaving home.
The court heard he had fallen into heavy use of cannabis and psychedelic drugs and followed spiritualist beliefs which led him to start drinking his urine and washing himself with it. More Trending
A dual Spanish-Brazilian national who grew up in Brazil and moved to the UK a decade ago, he had fallen out with his family over his habits and ended up living in Newham.
Shortly before the murder, jurors heard, he killed and cooked his pet cat Wizard believing he was 'was being used against me by negative forces'.
He said he was going to eat Wizard but decided 'the world was collapsing', packed some clothes, his swords and a bell-bearing gun and headed out.
Monzo is due to be sentenced at a hearing later today.

Cowboy builder walks away from job seconds after causing house to explode
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A builder who walked away from a job on a Nottingham home following an explosion has avoided jail. Barry Newman, the sole trader of Foster Brother Builders, was hired to carry out refurbishment works at a property on Commercial Road, Bulwell. The 51-year-old placed a faulty portable space heater connected to a propane gas can in a cellar to dry out. On November 22, 2022, the heater exploded due to a gas leak, destroying almost all of the ground floor of the home. Newman, who suffered burns to his face, hands and scalp, was filmed walking away from the gutted property. Debris from the blast was propelled onto the road and pavement. Newman failed to provide correctly maintained and suitable equipment and had not carried out a risk assessment, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found. The manufacturer's instructions for the heater he used state that the equipment should be placed in a well-ventilated area. Propane containers should not be stored below ground, where leaked gas is more likely to collect and ignite. At a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates Court this month, Newman pleaded guilty to breaching regulations regarding the use of building equipment. The builder was handed a prison sentence of 12 months, suspended for two years. More Trending He will also have to complete 240 hours of unpaid work as well as pay £2,000 towards the cost of the damage. Inspector Roy Poulter said: 'This gas explosion has left one man unable to work due to the seriousness of the injuries sustained and it could have easily resulted in someone losing their life. 'This case should serve as a strong reminder to those in the building trade on the dangers of working with gas and the need to assess the risk, and just how serious both HSE and the courts take failures like this.' The Vivienne inquest confirms star was 'found by neighbour' two days after death
The Vivienne was found by a neighbour in their bathtub after being dead 'for a couple of days', an inquest has heard The RuPaul's Drag Race UK star, whose real name was James Lee Williams, died aged 32 at home in Cheshire on January 5 this year, with her family revealing two months later that she died 'from the effects of ketamine use causing a cardiac arrest'. An inquest on Monday morning heard that the star had been lying dead in the water for 'a couple of days' by the time she was found. A forensic toxicologist added that there was a 'relatively high' level of ketamine in their system, which suggested 'moderate to excessive use' of the drug before their death, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The inquest was heard by senior coroner Jacqueline Devonish at Cheshire Coroner's Court in Warrington, who said: '[Williams]did a lot for his community and he made a name for himself as a performing artist and as a drag artist as The Vivienne. 'His family say he was very bold in pursuit of his dreams and that he made a difference… It is very important to the family that James is not remembered for his use of ketamine, because drugs don't define the person he was.' The coroner added: 'On the balance of probabilities, I am satisfied that James Lee Williams' death was a misadventure. He took ketamine but he did not intend to end his own life.' The Vivienne was found dead in the bathroom of their home near Chester, the opening of the inquest was told, while police attended and confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances. During their time on RuPaul's Drag Race UK, The Vivienne opened up about their struggles with drug addiction. The star, who was the show's first ever winner in 2019, said on the programme at the time: 'It was party, drugs, but I couldn't leave the drugs at the party, it was constant for me.' They added that their addiction was a 'habit that caught on a bit too quick and a bit too hard'. The Government is seeking expert advice after illegal use of ketamine surged to record levels. Two firefighters shot dead by sniper while tackling Idaho wildfire in 'ambush'
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Two firefighters were killed in a shooting while they responded to a wildfire in the Idaho town of Coeur d'Alene. The pair were among a crew called out to tackle a fire on Canfield Mountain in the north-west of the US state yesterday afternoon. Around half an hour after the group arrived, shots started to be fired at them from a thick forest. Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris told a news conference that firefighters were still 'actively taking sniper fire as we speak'. He said: 'We are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting at public safety personnel. 'We are prepared to neutralize this suspect as quickly as possible.' A SWAT team responding to the incident later found a dead man with a firearm on the mountain, and the local emergency management team confirmed one gunman was dead. Afterwards, Norris said preliminary evidence indicated only one person was responsible for the shooting. He described the incident as a 'total ambush', saying the firefighters who were killed 'did not have a chance'. A third firefighter who was taken to hospital had left surgery and was in a stable condition but 'fighting for his life', the sheriff added. Helicopters sent out to find the suspect with heat-seeking technology had struggled with the smoke from the wildfire and the presence of hikers in the area, CBS News reported. People in the area were warned to shelter in place, while a 'strict prohibition on drone use' was ordered for the skies above the scene. Idaho Governor Brad Little wrote on X: 'This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters. I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more.'
