Sabharwal, had called his family from the airport, assuring them he would ring again after landing in London. That call never came. His final transmission was to air traffic control, moments before Air India Flight 171 went down.
Captain Sabharwal had logged more than 8,200 hours in the cockpit, according to India's aviation regulator DGCA. Colleagues believe his actual experience was far greater, noting that the DGCA's current digital system may not fully reflect his career history.
'He was a very quiet, diligent man,' said a fellow pilot. 'He flew Airbus A310s, Boeing 777s and the Dreamliner. He always kept his head down and did his work.'
A resident of Jal Vayu Vihar in Powai, Mumbai, Captain Sabharwal had recently told his 82-year-old father — a former DGCA official — that he would take time off soon to be with him. That visit will now never take place.
Captain Sabharwal was one of nine Mumbai-based crew members on the London-bound flight. Families who were expecting calls from Heathrow were instead confronted with news of the devastating crash.

6 lakh mini fridges from this company recalled for causing ‘heat and fire damage' worth $700,000 in US
Representative Image. Credit: Amazon Appliance maker Frigidaire has recalled over 6 lakh mini fridges due to a fire hazard that has led to injuries and over $700,000 in property damage, a report claims. The US-based company reportedly announced the recall earlier this week after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) discovered that the internal electrical components of the fridges can short-circuit, causing the plastic housing to catch fire. According to a report by The Independent, the commission's notice has detailed that at least 26 complaints have been received concerning these mini fridges, with issues such as 'smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and catching fire.' The report also cites two individuals who claimed that the problems with these mini fridges caused smoke inhalation. At the same time, the total property damages linked to these incidents surpassed $700,000 (nearly Rs 6 crore), the report added. What are the mini fridge models that were recalled The recalled mini fridges were available for purchase at retailers such as Walmart and through online platforms, including Walmart's website and Amazon, between January 2020 and December 2023. Model numbers affected by the recall include: EFMIS129, EFMIS137, EFMIS149, and EFMIS175. Eligible consumers can request a refund for the recalled units, which were initially priced between $36 and $40 (nearly Rs 3,500). According to the report, Curtis International Ltd., the importer of the recalled fridges, has yet to provide an official response regarding the matter. In addition to the mini fridges, several other products have also been recalled by the commission. This includes Pura 4 Smart Home Fragrance Diffusers with detachable covers, due to a risk of ingestion for children, and a rechargeable electric bug zapper racket, which may pose a shock risk. Recalls were also announced for various electric scooters and bikes. One of them, the FENGQS F7 Pro E-bike, was flagged for a potential fire risk from an overheating lithium-ion battery. CBSE relaxes 40-student limit per section, okays up to 45 in special cases
Nagpur: In a relief to CBSE-affiliated schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education last week allowed institutions to exceed the earlier cap of 40 students per section and admit up to 45 students — but only under exceptional circumstances. The decision comes after schools across the country, especially in Vidarbha, flagged difficulties in turning away students due to mid-session transfers and emergency situations. The revised guideline permits admissions beyond 40 per section in specific cases such as transfer of parents working in transferable jobs like defence establishments, PSUs or central government services, migration due to hostel shifts, medical emergencies, and essential repeat (ER) cases. However, the cap of 45 remains non-negotiable. A Nagpur-based school principal welcomed the move, calling it "a much-needed practical correction". "We often get transfer cases mid-session, especially from armed forces and banking families. Turning them away just because a class has 40 students felt unreasonable. This new rule recognises the on-ground reality schools are dealing with," she said. CBSE has directed schools to strictly record and justify each such admission. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo Reasons must be documented both in the admission & withdrawal register and in school's online portal (OASIS), along with relevant supporting details. The decision is aimed at offering schools flexibility without compromising transparency. Schools that admit beyond 40 must ensure that the classroom size is a minimum of 500 square feet, maintaining at least one square metre of floor area per child — in line with infrastructure norms under the CBSE affiliation bylaws. Another Nagpur-based principal said the decision reflects a welcome shift in CBSE's administrative thinking. "It's not a free-for-all. The board is simply saying that schools facing genuine cases should not be penalised for being accommodative. With proper documentation, we can now help families in distress, without breaking the rules," he said. While the 40-student limit was originally introduced to ensure quality classroom experience, the new rule attempts to balance academic standards with operational challenges faced by schools. CBSE has also advised schools to augment infrastructure where sections consistently reach full strength, suggesting that construction of additional classrooms may be considered to ensure learning outcomes are not diluted.

Teachers illuminate society with knowledge, values and ideas: Thaawarchand Gehlot
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday said teachers illuminate society with knowledge, values, and ideas, just as a lamp dispels darkness with its light. Speaking after presenting Adhyapak Bhushan and Lifetime Achievement awards to teachers during the celebration of Prerana Divas organised by the Karnataka Rajya Mahavidyalaya Shikshakara Sangha, Mangaluru unit, at Alva's Educational Institution in Moodbidri, Mr. Gehlot emphasised the role of educators, saying that teachers are not only pillars of society but also the foundation upon which knowledge, culture, and moral values are built. 'They shape the vision, direction, and purpose of students' lives,' he said. The Governor highlighted the significance of India's 'Guru-Shishya' tradition and said, 'From Acharya Chanakya to modern visionaries like Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, history has shown that teachers are not merely imparters of knowledge but creators of society. In an age marked by moral challenges, rapid technological change, and global competition, teachers are the cornerstone of innovation, wisdom, and ethics.' Mr. Gehlot also spoke about the changing landscape of education and said, 'The era of artificial intelligence and global competition has brought new challenges and opportunities. In such times, the role of a teacher becomes even more critical. The achievements of our education system are a testament to the dedication, sincerity, and innovation of our teachers. Their actions—whether arriving punctually, mentoring students or leading lives rooted in simplicity and honesty—speak louder than words.' He appreciated the contributions of the association and said it has played an exemplary role in safeguarding the dignity of the teaching profession, influencing educational policy and promoting quality education. Its consistent efforts to bridge the gap between education and action in academic institutions are commendable. Mr. Gehlot congratulated the awardees of Adhyapak Bhushan and Lifetime Achievement for their outstanding contribution to the field of education. Manipal Academy of Higher Education Pro-Chancellor H.S. Ballal and Meghalaya-based Saraswati Group of Institutions founder Ananthakrishna Bhat were conferred with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
