On June 17, 2015, the lives of parishioners of the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, were forever changed.
Rev. Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Cynthia Hurd, Ethel Lee Lance, the Rev. Depayne Middleton-Doctor, the Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., Myra Thompson, Susie Jackson, and Tywanza Sanders were in a bible study with other members of the congregation, led by Rev. Clementa Pinckney. The group welcomed Dylann Roof, a then 21-year-old white man, into the church to join them in fellowship and prayer. Their kindness was met by a horrific act of violence when Roof drew a rifle and opened fire, tragically killing all nine people.
Now, a decade later, the survivors are reflecting on the tragedy and remembering the loved ones they lost.
Craig Melvin, of NBC's 'Today Show,' interviewed several of the families who were in the church that day and lost loved ones. Malana Pinckney was only six years old when the tragedy took place. Malana's father was Rev. Clementa Pinckney, one of the nine people murdered that day. Malana was in a study room with her mother, Jennifer Pinckney, who credits her daughter as the reason why she's still here with us today.
'By her coming and being with us, [it] kept me in the office,' Jennifer Pinckney told NBC. 'Because I knew, six years old, she was not going to sit in a Bible study. She was just going to be running around and wanting to talk, or wanting to eat a snack, or something. So I knew it was best, 'We're going to say in the pastor's study.' And that's why I'm here today, is because of her.'
For the Pinckneys, Clementa has never been far from their thoughts. His memory has loomed large as the family has celebrated several milestones over the last year. 'Malana went to the prom, Eliana [their other daughter] graduated from college. It's just been like, 'Your father should've been here to witness and to be a part of all of this that's going on,'' Jennifer said. Source: Getty / Getty
'It is so hard to go through your life and not just let this tear me down for the rest of my life. I have so much that I have to live for, for my mom and for my dad,' Malana told NBC.
Felicia Sanders, Tywanza's mother, told NBC that she still hasn't moved on from the tragedy. 'You don't,' Sanders said. 'You just have to do what you have to do. I feel sometimes like, even though Dylann Roof got sentenced, I feel like we got sentenced also.'
Roof chose Emanuel AME Church in particular as it's a historically Black church, and he wanted to start a 'race war.' Roof was arrested the day after the shooting in Charleston and was eventually tried and given the death sentence. Despite the horrific, racially motivated nature of his crime, Roof's attorneys have continually tried to have his death sentence overturned.
Sadly, in the ten years since the shooting, white supremacy has only become more pronounced, with the attitudes expressed by Roof making their way into mainstream politics. While there's been a decline in hate groups over the last year, that's largely due to the ideals they espouse being held or, at the very least, tolerated by elected officials and the public at large.
We've seen this in the prolonged attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the attempts to whitewash history at national museums, and a white woman actually raising substantial sums of money for calling a child the N-word. To drive home how much Roof's white supremacist ideals have become normalized, a GOP politician was actually upset with President Biden when he refused to commute Roof's death sentence.
A memorial has been in progress at the Charleston Emanuel AME Church to honor the nine victims and is open for visitors to pay respects. It's easy to give in to despair when you look at how much America has given in to its worst impulses over the last decade. Yet, for the sake of those we've lost, we have to do our best to strengthen our sense of community and fight back against the incredibly dangerous and deadly forces of white supremacy.

‘The Cosby Show' Alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Cause of Death Confirmed

The Cosby Show alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner's cause of death has officially been revealed. The Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) confirmed that Warner's autopsy was completed on Tuesday, July 22. Warner's cause of death was "asphyxia due to submersion." It was ruled accidental. On Monday, July 21, TMZ and People reported that Warner had died at age 54, citing accidental drowning as the cause of death. Following the first report, ABC News spoke to the Costa Rican National Police, who told the outlet that Warner had drowned off the coast of Costa Rica and his official cause of death was asphyxia. Police claimed that he died near Cocles, a beach in Limon, Costa Rica, after being caught by a high current in the water. He was discovered on Sunday, July 20. Most Shocking Celebrity Deaths of All Time Warner, born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in August 1970, landed his breakout role as Bill Cosby's onscreen son Theo Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. His performance earned him a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 1986 Emmy Awards. After The Cosby Show, Warner continued his television career on shows such as Malcolm & Eddie from 1996 to 2000, Reed Between the Lines in 2011 and 2015, Sons of Anarchy in 2014, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story in 2016 and The Resident from 2018 to 2023. Most recently, Warner had a four-episode-stint as Amir Casey on 9-1-1 in 2024. Aside from acting, Warner had a successful music and spoken poetry career. He won the Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for his song 'Jesus Children' with Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway in 2015 followed by another Grammy nomination for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album Hiding in Plain View in 2022. Despite Cosby's sexual assault scandals, Warner said that the show is still 'so groundbreaking' and important. 'What made it so groundbreaking was its universality,' he explained to People in February 2023. 'NBC initially saw it as a show about an upper-middle class Black family. Mr Cosby diligently impressed upon them that the show was about an upper-middle-class family that happened to be Black.' Celebrity Deaths of 2025: Anne Burrell, Kim Woodburn and More Stars We've Lost This Year Warner went on to say that before The Cosby Show, 'black sitcom humor was predicated on being Black' — and all of that changed with the NBC sitcom. 'Though the Huxtables were clearly Black — reflected quite obviously by their dress, the Black art on the walls, the music — the family issues all were universal,' he told the outlet. 'And though Cliff [Cosby] was a doctor and Claire [Phylicia Rashad] was an attorney, the family dynamic was one that practically every family — no matter the ethnicity, socio-economic status or even family makeup — could find something to relate to.' Warner is survived by his wife and a daughter, whose names he has not chosen to publicly reveal.

Officer In Breonna Taylor's Death Given 33-Month Jail Term

Source: Probal Rashid / Getty On Monday (July 21), a federal judge in Louisville, Kentucky, sentenced former Louisville police officer Brett Hankison to almost three years in prison for his role in the raid on EMT worker Breonna Taylor's home, which took her life five years ago. The sentence was a rebuke of the request of the Trump administration's request that Hankison receive a sentence of one day in prison. District Court Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings received a letter from Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet K. Dhillon, which requested that Hankison only serve one day in prison (the amount of time he spent in jail when he was initially charged) and three years of supervised release. The insulting request sparked outrage from Taylor's family and the community, resulting in protests outside of the federal courthouse in Louisville during the proceedings. Dhillon is a staunch ally of Trump and has worked with the Department of Justice to dismiss lawsuits against police officers in Louisville and Minneapolis, which were brought in the wake of Taylor's murder and the murder of George Floyd that same year. 'Every American who believes in equal justice under the law should be outraged,' attorneys for the family said in a statement after the administration's request. 'Recommending just one day in prison sends the unmistakable message that white officers can violate the civil rights of Black Americans with near-total impunity.' The request is a new moment in the Trump administration's culture war seeking to elimintate claims of discrimination against law enforcement. Hankison was convicted last November of one count of violating Breonna Taylor's civil rights through the use of excessive force by firing 10 shots through her window during a raid, which police claimed was to seize illegal drugs. During testimony, he claimed it was to protect fellow officers during the 'no-knock' raid. His shots hit a neighboring apartment. Taylor's boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, shot at the officers thinking they were intruders. Officers Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly fired back, striking and killing Taylor. 'If I knew everything I knew today, I never would have fired my gun,' Hankison said to the Taylor family and her friends in court before sentencing, according to local CBS network WLKY . Two other officers, Kyle Meany and Joshua Jaynes, are awaiting trial on charges alleging that they falsified the warrant used for the botched raid on Taylor's home. Cosgrove and Mattingly were never charged for their role in Taylor's death. SEE ALSO Officer In Breonna Taylor's Death Given 33-Month Jail Term was originally published on
