However, his promising career came to a screeching halt when contract negotiations with Ottawa stalled amid rising speculation about his involvement in the alleged 2018 group sexual assault involving members of Canada's World Junior team.
As a restricted free agent, Formenton was left unsigned and later moved overseas to play for HC Ambrì-Piotta in Switzerland. In 2025, he stepped away from professional hockey entirely and began working in construction in his hometown.
Legal charges tied to 2018 Team Canada incident
The turning point came on January 28, 2024, when Formenton turned himself in to London police. He was officially charged with one count of sexual assault related to an incident that allegedly took place in June 2018, shortly after Team Canada's World Junior Championship victory.

'Formenton had 'moved on from a hockey career,'' read court documents filed in August 2024. Despite this claim, the implications of his past actions continue to follow him into the courtroom. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial began in April 2025.
In a twist that further complicates his public image, Formenton is also seeking $20 million in damages from his former agency. He alleges that he was misadvised during contract negotiations, which ultimately left him vulnerable when his hockey career unraveled due to the criminal investigation.

Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard headline the most attractive restricted free agents in 2025
Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard headline the most attractive RFPs in 2025 (Image Via Twitter) Very talented young stars like Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard could cause big changes in team alignments if offer sheets come into play. With the NHL offseason warming, July 1 holds some importance as the beginning of the RFA signing period across the league. Among the most conspicuous names being talked about are Toronto Maple Leafs winger Matthew Knies and Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard, lured with stellar seasons. Since RFAs are the only ones eligible to be offered sheets by rival franchise(s), it is going to result in months full of speculation, negotiation, and surprise. Skyrocketing valuation: Setting RFA standards, Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard Toronto's young 22-year-old winger, Matthew Knies, seems to be on the path to becoming a franchise player someday. Knies finished with 58 points during the regular season and scored five important playoff goals. This ability to shine during crunch time might threaten other teams, planting an aggressive offer sheet for him against Toronto. Knies has scored 44 goals over two seasons and has undoubtedly proven he belongs in every conversation for top-six assignments across the league. For blue-lined defensemen, the Oilers' Evan Bouchard is probably secretly considered one of the top defensemen. He contributed 67 points in the regular season, and then he scored a whopping 23 points in just 22 playoff appearances. Bouchard's offensive savvy and power-play prowess have cemented him as a cornerstone for Edmonton, and also perhaps as a premier RFA if the talks falter. Then there are others, outside these two stars, you need to watch: Marco Rossi and Gabriel Vilardi topped 60 points this season with the Wild and Jets, respectively. Both have grown into steady centers who can be trusted with skating top-six minutes. Meanwhile, defensemen like Luke Hughes and Bowen Byram present a long-term defensive threat, making them next on the buyers' list. And of course, goalies have been important, as well: Dostal has shown flashes of brilliance despite Anaheim's struggles, and Dobes has shone in his limited time for Montreal. Also, teams taking into account the offer sheet must go through the implications for the cap and compensation; first-round picks could be the price for luring in a rising star. Yet for cap-heavy and contender-type teams, such RFAs offer a rare opportunity to rebuild immediately. Also Read: Wayne Gretzky net worth in 2025: Exploring the Great One's business ventures and endorsements With a strong class of RFAs led by the likes of Matthew Knies and Evan Bouchard, this summer could turn the NHL landscape upside down. Sabalenka cruises on Wimbledon's hottest opening day as Alcaraz launches title bid
LONDON: Aryna Sabalenka kept her cool to cruise into the Wimbledon second round on the hottest opening day in the history of the championships as Carlos Alcaraz prepared to launch his bid for a third successive title. The BBC said temperatures at the All England Club had reached 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.5 degrees Fahrenheit) by 1500 GMT, surpassing the previous record for the start of the tournament of 29.3 Celsius set in 2001. Top seed Sabalenka used ice packs to beat the heat during her 6-1, 7-5 victory over Canadian qualifier Carson Branstine on sweltering Court One. The 27-year-old Belarusian is a three-time Grand Slam champion but suffered agonising three-set defeats in this year's Australian Open and French Open finals. Sabalenka has never been beyond the Wimbledon semi-finals and missed last year's tournament with a shoulder injury. "I felt really great. Super grateful to be healthy and ready to compete and to be through the first round," said the world number one, who next faces New Zealand's Lulu Sun or Czech player Marie Bouzkova. "It was really good for me to have this little fight in the second set just to see where my level is at."
