Catapult-wielding children targeting wildlife terrorise Kent village
Residents in Greenhithe said the 'vile' youngsters were attacking swans and other birds on a weekly basis.
Some animals have even been found dead after being shot with ball bearings, leaving some locals to fear for their own safety.
Holly Collins said she was targeted at St Clements Lake in Greenhithe on Sunday after challenging the group. The incident happened while her children were in the back of her car.
Ms Collins, 37, said: 'I pulled up outside their house, and there were teenagers aiming at ducks in the lake. I shouted at them, 'You better not be hurting those ducks, because I'll call the police', and they all started swearing at me.'
Ms Collins estimated that there were around a dozen boys aged between 12 and 13.
She added: 'I got back in the car and we drove off, but my son's friend had forgotten his phone, so we came back and then they were all aiming at me.
'I had the window open with the kids in the car, and they hit it but luckily it missed me. Then they all ran off.'
'Very vile individuals'
Residents said the attacks were happening at both St Clements Lakes and the lakes at Bluewater Shopping Centre, with 'no end in sight'.
Anum Abid, who has lived by St Clements Lakes for seven years, said: 'It's just ridiculous how bad it's getting. Everyone is just so fed up and frustrated.
She added: 'You'll see an average kid here wanting to throw stones at a bird for absolutely no reason whatsoever and the thing is they seem to have no fear of anything. They're very vile individuals.'
Carly Ahlen, another resident and a wildlife campaigner, claimed the regularity of attacks had resulted in a decrease in the bird population at the lakes.
Last year, she was alerted to the killing of eight geese which had been deliberately hit in nearby Dartford.
A few months ago, a moorhen and a goose were shot and killed with ball bearings on the St Clements Lakes development.

Teen jailed over 'sadistic' torture and killing of two kittens in London woods
A 17-year-old boy has been detained for the 'sadistic' torture and killing of two kittens which were found cut open in a park in north-west London. There was no reaction from the teenager as he was handed his 12-month detention and training order at London's Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court. District judge Hina Rai told the youngster the killings were 'without a doubt the most awful offences against animals I have seen in this court'. Knives, blowtorches and scissors were also found at the scene. A member of the public who found the mutilated kittens on May 3rd warned another passerby not to go down the footpath because 'there is something horrific down there'. The boy, along with a 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had previously pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the protected animals. The pair also each admitted one count of possession of a knife at Ruislip Golf Course. The girl has yet to be sentenced. Earlier a passerby had seen the boy holding a black animal carrier with netting at the end which was 'moving slightly as if something live was inside it'. In sentencing the judge told the boy that his actions were 'extensively planned' and 'clearly premeditated'. Judge Hina Raijudge added: 'You said sorry in your (police) interview but reports also show that you struggle to show empathy and realise that the kittens would suffer. 'It seems you chose the kittens because they have emotion and you would have power over them.' Notes found on the boy's phone detailed his desire to murder people too. He had previously written: 'I really wanted to murder someone. 'Every day I was researching how to get away with murder. 'I have come close. I have killed cats to reduce my urges. 'I have skinned, strangled and stabbed cats.' Prior to this offence, the boy - who has reportedly suffered with depression, anxiety, hallucinations and self-harm - had no previous convictions. Earlier prosecutor Valerie Benjamin told the court the boy's actions 'showed a degree of planning in terms of looking for animals and researching in terms of killing animals and his desire to go on to killing humans and how it would be to get away with murder and killing a homeless person'. The horrific scenes were not a 'spur of the moment' event but involved planning in 'finding the animals, taking them to a public place and killing them in such a sadistic manner'.

British people are involved in an international animal cruelty network that electrocutes, drowns and starves cats for online torture-porn videos. The network - which started in China and is believed to have thousands of members - shares and sells graphic videos and images of the animals being tortured and killed, the BBC reports. It comes after a 16-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy from north-west London pleaded guilty to torturing and killing two kittens in a park. Between May 2023 and May 2024, approximately one new video was uploaded online every 14 hours, according to the vigilante animal rights activist group Feline Guardians. Feline Guardians says it has documented 24 animal abuse groups this year, the largest of which has more than 1,000 members. New members are encouraged to mutilate animals and share their torture videos before being allowed to gain access to the wider network. The most active torturer is believed to have filmed the abuse and murder of more than 200 cats. Chat conversations between group members, who are seemingly based in the UK, include discussions about how to obtain cats including adopting them from the RSPCA. In another exchange one shared an advert for kittens for sale alongside the message stating that they wanted to 'torture them [the kittens] so bad [sic]'. In September 2023 the network launched the '100 cat kill' competition, during which members were challenged to kill and torture 100 cats as quickly as possible. Viral videos depicting the brutal torture and murder of cats were originally posted by Wang Chayoi. He was detained by the Chinese authorities for 15 days and made to write a letter of repentance. But his footage developed a cult following across the globe inspiring copycat videos. Lara, a volunteer for Feline Guardians, spends her time undercover on animal abuse forums. Speaking to the BBC she said: 'Every day I feel heartbroken, there is not a day that goes past that I don't feel like my heart is breaking.' The group have held several demonstrations outside the Chinese embassy in London urging the CCP to take harsher action against animal abusers in China. Explaining, Laura said: 'In mainland China, there are no laws that are stopping this. 'So that means that abusers and torturers can effectively do what they want and live out these very sadistic fantasies without any consequence. 'These videos are then uploaded, and essentially that's a global problem, because that means that everyone has access to these videos. 'Children are seeing this.' Ian Briggs, head of the RSPCA's special operations unit, told the BBC: 'Treating animals in this way is absolutely not acceptable and has no place in a modern society.'
