Watch the Corvette ZR1X Absolutely Demolish the Nürburgring in Its Record Run

Motor 13 days ago
Shortly after announcing its C8 Corvette Nürburgring Nordschleife
lap times
, Chevrolet put up onboard videos on its YouTube channel. Naturally, they make for excellent viewing and reveal something key—setting fast laps like this is serious business.
Especially in the case of ZR1 and ZR1X, you've got boatloads of power to manage on a circuit where the bumps, curves, and undulations simply don't end for over 13 miles. All credit to the engineers who drove these lap times, and the people on the Corvette team. They made a couple of monsters.
There are other interesting insights to glean here from watching the video and looking at the data. What becomes obvious is that both the ZR1 and ZR1X are bullets in a straight line. Down into the compression at Fuchsröhre, both are touching 186 MPH, and at the end of the long Döttinger Höhe straight at the end of the track, they both briefly touch 199 MPH. The fact that max speeds are identical is interesting too. Despite its extra 186 hybrid horsepower, the ZR1X really isn't that much quicker than the ZR1.
That's evident in the lap times, with the ZR1 doing a 6:50.763 and the ZR1X doing a 6:49.275—astoundingly similar over a huge circuit like the Ring. Both have the same basic aero and tire package, and it seems the extra weight of the hybrid system negates the horsepower advantage. So the lap time comes down to the extra mechanical grip the ZR1X's electric front axle generates.
These videos also give us an opportunity to compare the ZR1 and ZR1X to its closest Ring rivals, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. Neither has nearly as much power as the 1,000-plus-hp Corvettes, so they make up time with cornering speeds and under braking. The fact that Porsche and AMG use pro drivers, too, has to count for something as well, though GM's engineers are extremely handy. In any case, it's a fun comparison to watch how the ZR1X and the GT3 RS end up within a tenth of a second despite the Porsche only being able to top out at around 180 mph.
And let's not forget about the Z06 either! It's a couple of years old at this point, but its 7:11.286 lap is still a fun watch, and deeply impressive.
So sit back and enjoy. We sure have.

Despondent Hamilton and Ferrari crash back to earth

Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari crashed back to earth on Sunday when 24 hours after Charles Leclerc claimed the team's first pole of 2025 they left Hungary frustrated and dejected. Seven-time world champion Hamilton, who on Saturday said he was "completely useless" to the team and ready to be replaced, wound up 12th while Leclerc dropped from race leader to a grumbling fourth. Hamilton, backed beforehand by team boss Fred Vasseur, was in a bleak mood suggesting that he remained trapped by a crisis of confidence that has turned his spectacular marquee signing for Ferrari into a nightmare. "When you have a feeling, you have a feeling," he said enigmatically, responding to a question about his comment suggesting that he was no longer good enough for Ferrari and should be replaced. He added: "There's a lot going on in the background that isn't great." Asked if he still loved racing, he replied to say he did, but with little conviction. Leclerc appeared to be little happier after he had failed to convert pole into victory for the 15th time in 16 attempts during the last three years. His one success came in last year's Monaco Grand Prix, his home event. "We lost a podium, so I am very disappointed," said Leclerc, having warned the team during the race that they had bungled his car's set-up in some unspecified way. "But I spoke too quickly because being out of the car, I had a bit more detail about what went on," he added later. "I thought it was about something else that we had discussed, but unfortunately it was on the chassis. "There was an issue on that side and we will look into it for it not to happen again. It doesn't really make me feel any better because when you're fighting for a win, and then you have these kind of issues, it never happens. "We need to look into it to make sure it never happens again because the car was just undriveable. "It was around lap 40 because as soon as I started to struggle and to complain, it was basically when we started to have the issue and it got worse and worse. "It's very frustrating to have everything under control, to know that the pace is in the car to win, and then you end up being nowhere. We lost a podium.' Hamilton, 40, winner of a record eight Hungarian Grands Prix and a record nine poles at the circuit, finished where he started and with his worst result at the circuit, inevitably sparking talk of his possible retirement. But as he headed off towards a summer break, he could look at the joy in the Aston Martin garage where, despite a back muscle injury, his one-time McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso had finished a season's best fifth, aged 44. str/nr

This Olympic Champion Gave Herself Three Years to Win the Tour de France. She Only Needed One.

Before riding a single mile of the women's Tour de France, Pauline Ferrand-Prevot was already one of the most accomplished cyclists of all time—on any kind of bicycle, on any kind of terrain. At 23, she had been a world champion in road cycling, mountain biking and cyclocross, the muddy winter sport that also features grass, sand, barriers and sometimes stairs. She was the first rider, man or woman, to hold the title in all three disciplines at once. Then, nearly a decade later, she became an Olympic champion at her home Games at Paris 2024.

Chelsea complete Jorrel Hato transfer on seven-year contract

Chelsea have completed the signing of Jorrel Hato from Ajax. The 19-year-old defender has signed a seven-year deal at the Premier League side after an agreement between the clubs for a fee in excess of €40million plus a sell-on clause was reached earlier this week. Upon joining the club, Hato said: 'I'm very excited, I'm so happy to be here,' said Hato. 'I thought a lot about my future and wanted to take the next step in my career. Chelsea is the best place for me to do that so I'm very happy.' Jorrel Hato is officially a Blue. 🔵✍️ — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) August 3, 2025 The Netherlands international, who has played six times for the national side, has made 111 first-team appearances for Ajax after coming through the Dutch club's youth system. Hato is capable of playing at left-back and in the centre of defence, and will provide competition to Marc Cucurella, Malo Gusto, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana in Enzo Maresca's squad. Advertisement The Dutchman's arrival continues a busy summer at Stamford Bridge; Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens were all signed on permanent deals while Estevao Willian, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez have all arrived following pre-existing agreements. There have also been multiple departures from Chelsea, including goalkeepers Kepa Arrizabalaga and Djordje Petrovic, with forwards Joao Felix, Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke also moving on. Analysis by Andy Jones and Mark Carey Hato is one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe, having played regularly for Ajax for the last two seasons. Graduating from the Ajax academy, he is technically gifted and confident in possession. He is used to being in a ball-dominant side and he is not afraid to be adventurous with the ball at his feet both through dribbling or using his passing range. For context, only PSV Eindhoven's Richy Ledezma posted a better pass completion rate than Hato's 89 per cent among Eredivisie full-backs last season. At such a young age, he is still growing into his body and that will only benefit him defensively, an area he is good in but has room to improve — he is a solid one-on-one defender, reads the game well but does not dominate aerially.
