Researchers make key breakthrough in fight against growing crisis that threatens entire planet: 'No community is unaffected'
Communities are important when it comes to tackling the world's growing plastic problem, according to a group of researchers.
In their paper, published in the journal Microplastics and Nanoplastics, the scientists argued for a radical shift that sees communities as equal partners in co-creating research, knowledge, and action. The paper, summed up by the University of Portsmouth, was developed through an interdisciplinary workshop at the National Oceanography Centre in the United Kingdom.
The team highlighted the diverse ways that communities communicate about plastic pollution, including through puppet shows, participatory art, citizen science, and indigenous knowledge. For example, researchers from the University of Portsmouth worked with waste pickers in Kenya to create a piece of "legislative theater" that explored issues such as policymaking, discrimination, and job insecurity.
"In many contexts, especially in under-resourced areas, lack of formal education does not mean lack of knowledge," said study author Lesley Henderson of the University of Strathclyde. "Scientists must be careful not to conflate the two."
Meeting the plastics crisis head-on has become increasingly important. As the University of Portsmouth summary pointed out, estimates suggest that by 2040, up to 29 million tons of plastic could enter oceans each year, which is more than double the 2010 numbers.
As these plastics degrade over time, they break into smaller microplastics and nanoplastics, which further threaten the environment and human health. While researchers are still exploring all of the health impacts of microplastic exposure, these tiny particles have been tied to problems such as cancer, dementia, and impaired blood flow in the brain.
Meanwhile, scientists are exploring new methods to clean up plastics from the environment. For instance, one team discovered that egg whites can filter microplastics out of ocean water. Another group found a way to remove microplastics from the soil using a type of processed farm waste.
Individuals can help with the problem by reducing the amount of plastic they use. Reach for reusable shopping bags and water bottles, for instance, and opt for bar soap instead of the bottled varieties.
"Given the ubiquity of plastics in our day-to-day lives, and subsequently as an environmental pollutant, no community is unaffected by this issue," the paper stated.
Lead author Alice Horton of the National Oceanography Centre added: "Communities are not 'out there' waiting to be engaged. They are dynamic, diverse, and already playing critical roles in shaping how we understand and respond to ocean plastics."

Researchers studying microplastic contamination in common beverages made a startling discovery: Drinks stored in glass bottles contained between five and 50 times the level of microplastics as drinks in plastic bottles. "We were expecting the opposite result when we compared the level of microplastics in different drinks," said Iseline Chaïb of the Aquatic Food Safety Unit, which conducted the study at the ANSES Laboratory for Food Safety. Researchers sought to investigate the levels of microplastics contained in a variety of popular drinks sold in France, as no microplastic study to date had investigated the French beverage market. "The aim of the ANSES study was to determine the level of microplastic contamination in drinks such as water, soda, iced tea, wine, and beer," according to ANSES. "It also sought to establish the impact of their containers on this level." The results shocked even the researchers themselves. "It was observed that the most contaminated containers were glass bottles," the study found. "Caps were suspected to be the main source of contamination, as the majority of the particles in isolated beverages were identical to the color of the caps and shared the composition of the outer paint." Consistent with this hypothesis, wine held in bottles topped with corks showed little sign of microplastic contamination, per ANSES. "On average, in glass bottles of cola, lemonade, iced tea, and beer, there were around 100 microplastic particles per liter," ANSES said. "This number was five to 50 times lower in plastic bottles and cans." The study showed that we cannot simply rely on our intuition or common sense when it comes to protecting ourselves and our families from microplastic contamination. While the full health risks of microplastic contamination are as yet unknown, we do know that microplastics enter the human body via ingestion, skin contact, and even inhalation. "From food consumption alone, the intake of plastic particles in the human body ranges between 39,000 and 52,000 particles per person per year," according to the American Journal of Managed Care. Once inside the body, microplastics enter the bloodstream and spread via the circulatory system. Microplastics have been detected, among other places, in the "liver, colon, lung, feces, placenta, and breast milk," per AJMC, with the highest concentrations found in the colon and liver. Scientists studying the connection between microplastic contamination and certain medical conditions have found that people living in areas with higher levels of microplastic pollution also have a greater risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and stroke, according to AJMC. While advocates strive toward large-scale initiatives to limit plastic production and waste, there are steps we all can take in our own lives to limit the amount of plastic we use. By finding fun, creative ways to repurpose and reuse plastic containers, we can prevent them from ending up in our landfills and waterways. Scientists Launch Wild New Project to Build a Human Genome From Scratch
A team of UK-based researchers is going where no scientist has dared to go—writing artificial human DNA from scratch. They're hoping the project will answer fundamental questions about the human genome and transform our understanding of health and disease. But the research topic is, for obvious reasons, controversial. Scientists have largely steered clear of trying to create full synthetic human genomes, wary of propelling us into a dystopian, Gattaca-esque future full of designer babies. Now, the Wellcome Trust, the world's largest medical charity, has coughed up about $11.7 million (£10 million) to kickstart the Synthetic Human Genome Project (SynHG). The charity says that the benefits outweigh the risks. The technology, it says, could be used to create new medical treatments, like designer cell-based therapies and virus-resistant tissue transplantation. Jason Chin, a professor at the University of Oxford, will lead the project in collaboration with several other UK-based universities and research centers. Over the next half-decade, Chin and his colleagues hope to create the foundational tools, technologies, and methods to allow researchers to create genomes from scratch. 'The ability to synthesize large genomes, including genomes for human cells, may transform our understanding of genome biology and profoundly alter the horizons of biotechnology and medicine,' Chin said in a statement. The Wellcome Trust also contributed significant funds to the Human Genome Project, which was completed 25 years ago. Actually building a human genome from nothing is even more ambitious and is expected to take years, maybe decades. Chin's team recently synthesized the complete genome of E. coli bacteria, but that's small potatoes next to a human genome, which is roughly 700 times larger. 'If you think about the human genome, it's more than just a set of genes on a string,' Julian Sale, a group leader at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, told The Guardian. 'There's an awful lot of the genome, sometimes called the dark matter of the genome, that we don't know what it does. The idea is that if you can build genomes successfully, you can fully understand them.' The scientists' first step will be to create a full, synthetic human chromosome, which researchers plan to tackle in the next five to ten years. Unlike genome editing, which works on one or a handful of genes at once, genome synthesis allows researchers to alter DNA at a larger scale. It could help determine how large swaths of our DNA—including those we don't know much about—determine our health and characteristics. 'The ability to synthesize large genomes, including genomes for human cells, may transform our understanding of genome biology and profoundly alter the horizons of biotechnology and medicine,' Chin said in a statement. Some researchers worry that the ability to write human genetic code could give researchers a scary amount of control over human living systems. It could one day be used to create synthetic humans, biological weapons, or even creatures with human DNA, Bill Earnshaw, a genetic scientist at Edinburgh University, told BBC News. But he adds that the technology necessary to do those things is still pretty far off. The project is attempting to tackle the thorny ethical issues of creating a human genome head-on. The Wellcome Trust is funding a parallel research effort into the social and ethical issues of creating human genomes in a lab, led by Joy Zhang at the University of Kent. 'This technology is going to be developed one day, so by doing it now we are at least trying to do it in as responsible a way as possible and to confront the ethical and moral questions in as upfront [a] way as possible,' Tom Collins, senior research manager at Wellcome, told BBC News.

Signpost exhibit shows nature thrives in clean air
An old wooden signpost from a national park is on display in the Natural History Museum, due to having 12 species of lichen living on it. The fingerpost from Exmoor has been part of the 'Fixing Our Broken Planet' exhibition at the museum since April to act as an example of an item recovered from an area with clean air. Organisers said the aim was to help educate people and "explore nature-based solutions that can help create a more sustainable world". Ranger Charlotte Wray, who assisted in the recovery of the post, said it was "such a joy to help tell the story of Exmoor". There are currently over 3,000 wooden fingerposts on Exmoor. The post was originally installed near Trentishoe Common in April 2010, before being collected and transported to the London exhibition. Ms Wray said: "Some of the lichens growing on this fingerpost indicate the high air quality on Exmoor, which is made possible through the lack of pollution and the presence of these highly functioning woodland ecosystems. "It's such a joy to help tell the story of Exmoor and we look forward to visiting the museum to see how the skilled conservators have gone about preserving these unique specimens." The Natural History Museum has been working with the National Park for some time to select the best exhibit.
