
Team Qatar heads to Germany for FISU world varsity games

Team Qatar has departed for Germany to participate in the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games, taking place in the Rhine-Ruhr region from July 16 to 27. The event will feature over 8,500 athletes from 150 countries, competing in 18 sports across 23 venues over 12 days.
Representing Qatar's rising generation of university athletes, seven players will showcase their talents in four different sports. Abdullah Khalifa and Khalid Hussein will take to the piste in the foil fencing competition.
Abdullah Abdulwahab, Youssef Magdy and Maryam Ali will compete in table tennis. Maryam Al-Fatnassi will aim high in the taekwondo arena, while Mubarka Al-Nuaimi will represent Qatar in the fiercely contested tennis events.
The Qatari delegation to the World University Games is headed by Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh Al-Nuaimi, president of Qatar Collegiate Sports Federation (QCSF),andRashid Saeed Adiba, QCSF secretary-general,the delegation director , along with seven male and female athletes and a number of coaches.
The World University Sports Conference will be organised in Bochum from July 17 to 19.
On this occasion, Adiba emphasised that Qatar's participation aligns with the QCSF's broader strategy to develop and empower student-athletes to compete confidently on the international stage.
He stated: 'Our goal goes far beyond simply showing up, westrive to expose our athletes to elite global competition, helping them refine their technical skills, elevate their mental readiness, and strengthen their confidence and competitive spirit.'
He added: 'Events like these offer an ideal platform to instill the core values of the university sports movement, excellence, teamwork, integrity, and innovation. They also allow us to build strategic partnerships with universities and sports institutions around the world, reinforcing Qatar's growing presence in the global collegiate sports scene.'

Al Gharafa sign Jamaican Mason Holgate on 2-year loan deal from Everton
Tribune News Network Doha Al Gharafa Sports Club (SC) has signed Jamaican Mason Holgate on a two-year deal from English club Everton. The signing was announced by the club on its official X account, confirming that the 28-year-has undergone medical tests in Doha. Born in England, Holgate began his professional career with Barnsley in 2014 and went on to play for several English clubs. Last season, he played for West Ham United on loan from Everton. He previously represented England at the U-20 and U-21 levels before deciding to play for his native national team, Jamaica. On Tuesday, Al Gharafa also confirmed the renewal of contracts for Algerian Yacine Brahimi and Tunisian Ferjani Sassi for an additional season. Brahimi joined Al Gharafa in July 2022 from Al Rayyan, making 84 appearances, scoring 45 goals, and playing a key role in securing the prestigious HH the Amir Cup title in May. Sassi arrived from Al Duhail in July 2023, appearing in 63 matches and scoring 17 goals. Al Gharafa will travel to Slovakia on Thursday for a training camp running through August 4. During the camp, Al Gharafa are set to play four friendly matches as part of preparations ahead of their Qatar Stars League (QSL) opener against Umm Salal on August 15.

‘FIFA U-17 World Cup will be another spectacular event hosted by Qatar'
Tribune News Network Doha Egyptian football legend, and U-17 head coach, Ahmed Al Kass looks forward to seeing a new generation of players shining on the big stage during the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup 2025. Set to take place in Qatar from 3 – 27 November, this will be the first FIFA World Cup to feature 48 teams. This year's edition marks the first of five consecutive tournaments that Qatar is hosting through to 2029. For Al Kass, a former Egyptian national team player who represented his country's senior side at the 1990 FIFA World Cup, the growing legacy of mega-sporting events in Qatar is a true testament to its place as a leading sports capital for the region. 'The world has already witnessed how Qatar delivered a phenomenal World Cup in 2022. The U-17 World Cup will be another spectacular tournament hosted by Qatar,' said Al Kass. 'As Arabs, we are proud that Qatar will play hosts for yet another exciting tournament. We share this pride with Qatar and are happy for the opportunity to play here.' Egypt have been drawn into Group E alongside England, Venezuela and Haiti. Their first match will see them take on Haiti on 4 November at Aspire Zone. Egypt made its last appearance at a FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1997, when it hosted the competition, and reached the quarterfinals. Now 28 years later, a new generation of young Pharaohs will be eager to make history and go even further. 'All the teams in our group have great caliber. Every team will be working hard to produce the best results. 'I hope our players will be able to showcase their strengths on the pitch. We want to see Egypt's flag raised in victory at the World Cup. We want to win it,' said Al Kass. Egypt is one of six Arab teams that have qualified to the tournament. They are joined by hosts Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Tunisia and Morocco. The best achievement historically by any Arab country in the competition was in 1991, when Saudi Arabia lifted the trophy. Bahrain, Qatar and Oman have all claimed fourth spot in 1989, 1991 and 1995 respectively. 'This is a huge achievement for our team to play in the U-17 World Cup after a long absence. We are excited and ready to re-emerge as strong contenders in the championship. I am confident that our young Pharaohs will give their best and make Egypt proud,' said Al Kass. The FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 will take place from 3-27 November 2025 at the state-of-the-art Aspire Zone complex. The first match will see hosts Qatar take on European giants Italy on 3 November. The final match will be held at Khalifa International Stadium, which served as one of the venues for the historic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Stage set for third edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Chess Association (QCA) has announced details of the 3rd edition of Qatar Rail Open Chess Championship 2025, organized in cooperation with Qatar Rail. The tournament coincides with World Chess Day, which falls on July 20 every year. The preliminary rounds will begin tomorrow, Thursday, at the Qatar Chess Training Center, with the participation of 100 players. The competition will be held in a nine-round blitz format to determine the players who will advance to the final stage. The final rounds of the tournament will be held on Sunday at the Al Bidda Station of Doha Metro. Twenty players will participate in the nine-round Swiss system. QCA said it has made all arrangements for smooth start of the competition tomorrow, putting the final touches on the selection of arbiters who will oversee the competitions. QCA President Mohammed Al Mudahka praised the continuation of the tournament for a third consecutive year, appreciating the cooperation between QCA and Qatar Rail, which aims to achieve several goals, most notably spreading the culture of chess in society. He expressed his aspiration for further cooperation that would help QCA achieve its vision of developing the game by building a strong base for it. He explained that the tournament is witnessing participation of a large number of national team players, emphasizing that the tournament aims to see new players emerge who will support the national teams in future. He also emphasized that the tournament is part of QCA's plans to bring about a qualitative shift in the game and attract talent. He added that the tournament represents a valuable opportunity to discover more promising talent for inclusion in the coming period, expanding the selection of the best players to represent Qatari chess in international tournaments. For his part, Abdullah Ali Al Mawlawi, Head of Communications and Public Relations at Qatar Rail, expressed his pleasure in partnering with the Qatar Chess Association in organizing the event following the success achieved in the first two editions.
