Tyrone vs Kerry classics - Red Hands win '03 semi-final

Yahoo10-07-2025
With Tyrone and Kerry braced to write the latest chapter in an intense and storied rivalry in Saturday's All-Ireland SFC semi-final, here's a look back at the 2003 All-Ireland semi-final, which the Red Hands won 0-13 to 0-6.
A year after squandering a half-time lead to lose the All-Ireland Final against Armagh, the Kingdom were to endure an even more chastening afternoon as the Red Hands dominated the 2003 All-Ireland semi-final from the start despite losing talisman Peter Canavan to injury early on.

Tyrone's insatiable desire saw them hit the opening six points and the lead was 0-9 to 0-2 at half-time as the Kingdom had no match for the Red Hands' running game and ferocity in the tackle.
One lengthy sequence of play in the first half saw Kerry's firstly Dara O Cinneide and then Eoin Brosnan, while in their own half, become surrounded by a posse of Tyrone players as they fruitlessly attempted to gain ground with ball in hand.
A furious Pat Spillane delivered his verdict to the TV audience afterwards but there had been no doubting Tyrone's superiority on a day when Paidi O Se's side had no answer to the game plan devised by Mickey Harte.

ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy

ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy originally appeared on The Spun. Believe it or not, we're just 20 days away from the start of the 2025 college football season. Week 0 will feature five intriguing matchups, which includes a showdown between Iowa State and Kansas State in Dublin, Ireland. The following week there'll be countless games on display, such as Texas vs. Ohio State. That might very well be a preview for this year's College Football Playoff. Even though Texas and Ohio State are loaded with talent heading into this season, ESPN's Mark Schlabach doesn't have either team ranked No. 1 as of this time. Instead, that title belongs to Penn State. "After finally turning the corner under coach James Franklin in 2024, the Nittany Lions look loaded for bear this coming season. With Allar, Allen and Singleton returning, Penn State should have one of the most balanced offenses in the FBS, especially if Allar takes the next step as a downfield passer. Adding Pena, Ross and Hudson was critical; Penn State's receivers didn't have a reception in a 27-24 loss to Notre Dame in a CFP semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl. Pena, a slot receiver, had 84 catches for 941 yards with nine scores in 2024," Schlabach wrote. Schlabach actually has Ohio State ranked No. 5 as of this August, which is pretty low for the defending champions. Here's the top 25 from ESPN: Penn State Clemson Texas Georgia Ohio State LSU Notre Dame Oregon Alabama BYU Illinois Arizona State South Carolina Iowa State SMU Texas Tech Indiana Kansas State Florida Michigan Miami Louisville Texas A&M Ole Miss Oklahoma Unsurprisingly, these rankings from ESPN sparked quite a debate on social media. "This is a wild Top 25... Penn State is NOT No. 1 Dawgs are NOT No. 4 Indiana and Sooners should be NOWHERE near Top 25 Miami, Fla. should be in Top 10," one fan said. "Not even Penn State fans believe Penn State is No. 1," another fan wrote. "I think this may come back to haunt Penn State," a third fan commented. Penn State has an early test against Oregon on Sept. 27. That could tell us all we need to know about James Franklin's squad. Do you think Penn State deserves to be ranked No. 1 heading into this season?ESPN Unveils Top 25 For 2025 College Football Season - And Fans Aren't Happy first appeared on The Spun on Aug 3, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 3, 2025, where it first appeared.

Wales stars must 'want a piece of Lions action'

British and Irish Lions' Welsh chairman Ieuan Evans has urged Jac Morgan's leading compatriots to set their sights on making the 2029 tour to New Zealand. Morgan was originally one of only two Welshmen in the touring squad and won two caps off the bench as Andy Farrell's side beat Australia 2-1. He scored a try in Saturday's final Test defeat in Sydney and was at the centre of the tour's most controversial moment in the second. Morgan's clearout on Carlo Tizzano at a ruck in the build-up to Hugo Keenan's winning second-Test try was deemed legal. Debate over that incident has continued to rage, but Evans wants Morgan's impact at home to serve as inspiration. 'That needs to drive players to say 'ok, I want a piece of the action. I want to be playing in four years time in New Zealand'," said former Wales and Lions wing Evans. "Fingers crossed that the future is bright for Welsh rugby and the Welsh national team.'' Farrell named Morgan and Gloucester scrum-half Tomos Williams in his original squad, but the latter was ruled out after suffering a hamstring injury in the opening game in Australia. The Ospreys star was omitted from the first Test, but after entering the fray in the second in Melbourne, played a crucial part in the late drama that sealed the series. ''If you weren't captured by the drama of that second Test at the MCG then, quite frankly, you haven't got a soul," said Evans. "That was exactly what a sporting legacy is all about, that's what sport is supposed to do at such an iconic venue as the MCG.' ''If I'd have had a lifestyle watch on at the time, 'it'd have probably told me to go to ER very, very quickly. "But we got the result and it was a remarkable performance and again, one of character.'' Lions player ratings - the incredible, the unlucky & the poor Farrell in 'really good place' to lead Lions again What was the best winning Lions tour? Goodwill from the players 'important' While there are no plans to move away from the traditional touring schedule of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Evans says a full review of the past few weeks will take place. The Lions are open to freshening up the tour format to bolster the matches before the Test series, which were largely underwhelming in Australia. ''Obviously New Zealand brings different parameters around touring. But the players have had a great time and we'll make sure that's the case because that goodwill from the players, is really important and you've got to keep replenishing that. "You can't rely on it because hubris gets everybody eventually. You can't just assume that this is the norm and everybody is going to love this for eternity. "We'll look, we'll assess, so we can do things differently.''

Louth beat Antrim to win All-Ireland Junior title

Antrim were denied a first All-Ireland Junior Football Championship since 2022 after losing to Louth by 0-13 to 1-9 at Croke Park. Bronagh Devlin netted a third-minute penalty for the Saffrons after Theresa Mellon was fouled within the square. Aoife Russell cancelled out another swift point by Mellon, but Antrim extended their advantage through Omolara Dahunsi. Dahunsi responded to back-to-back points from Louth forwards Russell and Ceire Nolan, and the Saffrons' advantage was cut further after Kate Flood and Shannen McLaughlin capitalised on Devlin's yellow card. Louth held a 0-8 to 1-4 advantage at the break after a score by captain Aine Breen and two points from Flood. Maria O'Neill got Antrim back on level terms early in the second half, but Eimear Byrne soon restored Louth's advantage. Louth, who lost the 2024 decider to Fermanagh, put one hand on the title when Flood, Breen, Mia Duffy and Lucy White put them five points clear in the closing stages. Antrim rallied late on through Ana Mulholland, Mellon and a late O'Neill point, but Louth had enough in hand to get over the line.
