Nickelback's name has secret meaning and fans have only just realised it
Nickelback has been producing chart-topping hits since they first entered the music industry - and the rock band continues to enjoy popularity. The Canadian group consists of lead singer and guitarist Chad Kroeger, bassist Mike Kroeger, and rhythm guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist Ryan Peake.
Over its initial 10 years, the band saw a rotation of drummers before Daniel Adair became a permanent fixture. Brothers Chad and Mike, who founded the band, initially named it Village Idiot. This was swiftly changed to Nickelback.
Although the band, recognised for a discography that spans genres such as post-grunge, pop rock, alternative rock and more, was established in 1995, they didn't achieve mainstream success until 2002.
Their big break came with the release of the single, How You Remind Me, which climbed to the top spot in both the United States and Canada, peaking at fourth in the UK, reports the Express.
Further success ensued, with albums achieving platinum status and mega hits like Photograph, Far Away and Rockstar securing their position in the cultural landscape of the early 2000s.
Despite their fame and wealth, many people don't know the origin of the band's name. The story behind Nickelback's name was discussed on the social media platform, Quora.
Fans and music enthusiasts alike were eager to share their thoughts and insights on the band. As it turns out, the name Nickelback has ties to the well-known coffee shop chain, Starbucks.
Responding to a query about the origin of the band's name on Quora, one user detailed: "Nickelback started life as a covers band called Village Idiot.
"The band later changed its name to Nickelback, which originated from the nickel in change that band member Mike Kroeger gave customers at his job at Starbucks; he would frequently say, 'Here's your nickel back'."
Adding more depth to the coin reference, another user shared: "In the sixties, a phone call from a public phone cost a nickel.
"To save money, I would give my parents one ring on the telephone when I was returning from NYC, they would then pick me up at the bus stop. If you hung up after one ring, you got your nickel back."
In a Reddit thread, a social media user admitted to recently discovering the band was initially named Village Idiot. Speculating why they might have opted for a different name, one person suggested: "I guess they changed it because the original name was a bit too 'on the nose'."
Another added: "They are one of my favorite bands. I'm glad they chose the current band name instead of the other."
Regarding the initial name, Ryan Peake clarified: "Our small town was almost village-sized, so I thought it was appropriate."
Eventually, the band decided to change their name as Village Idiot could potentially attract negative attention, particularly as they aimed to appeal to broader audiences.
The origin of the name Nickelback actually stems from Mike Kroeger's time working at a Starbucks, where he would frequently hand customers a "nickel back" as change after they purchased their beverages.

Ginger-haired pop megastar Ed Sheeran 'caused earthquake' after thousands of fans jumped to hit songs at packed concert

And scientists at the Norsar foundation — set up to detect earthquakes and nuclear explosions — noticed a clear increase in energy frequency of around two to three hertz, A source said yesterday: 'When tens of thousands of people move in synchrony in this way, the vibrations propagate through the ground and are registered as small but clear signals by seismometers. 'When about 40,000 fans jump at the same time, even an earthquake station can't help but dance a little.' It's not the first time Sheeran, 34, has caused earth tremors at a concert. In August 2023 fans were so excited when he brought local rapper Macklemore on stage at Lumen Field in Seattle they caused a minor earthquake. A month earlier energetic dancing by Taylor Swift fans at the same US venue registered seismic activity equivalent to a 2.3-magnitude earthquake. At the time Prof Jackie Caplan-Auerbach, a geology professor at Western Washington University said: 'Ed Sheeran is not someone who I associate with rampant crazy crowd behaviour, 'However, he did bring Macklemore onstage. So here you have a local artist playing Can't Hold Us, which is a very jumpy song and a very high energy song, and the crowd responded appropriately, and it's definitively the strongest shaking we saw.' Ed Sheeran teams up with school pals AND 00s rock legend for epic performance Sheeran is one of the most successful singers of his generation and the third most followed artist globally on streaming platform Spotify. His 2017 hit Shape of You has been streamed 4.5billion times. Perfect, from the same year, has 3.5billion streams and 2014's Photograph just over three billion.

GTA Online will add age verification to comply with UK laws claims insider
Rockstar is said to be planning an age verification system for GTA Online, with GTA 6 rumoured to be following suit for its online mode. While GTA 6 is expected to come with its own dedicated online multiplayer mode, it's currently unknown whether that will be something separate from GTA Online or just an extension of it. Will GTA Online be shut down and you'll be forced to hop over to GTA Online 2? Or is the playerbase substantial enough for Rockstar to keep supporting both? Hopefully, Rockstar will have an answer before GTA 6's launch in May 2026, although a new rumour suggests that big changes are coming to the way GTA's online features are accessed, particularly in the UK. The rumour comes from noted Rockstar dataminer Tez2, who believes they've found evidence of age verification for GTA Online within the game's files. 'Rockstar is planning to implement age assurance checks in the near future, rolling them out by region,' Tez2 writes on X. 'You may need to verify your age to access GTA Online, or certain features, like phone messages, text chat, Snapmatic, may be restricted until you verify your age.' Jokes aside, Rockstar is planning to implement age assurance checks in the near future, rolling them out by may need to verify your age to access #GTAOnline, or certain features, like phone messages, text chat, Snapmatic, may be restricted until you verify your age. — Tez2 (@TezFunz2) July 31, 2025 While GTA Online (and by extension GTA 5) has an age rating of 18, there is technically nothing stopping you from playing the game regardless of age, should an older relative buy it for you. However, if this age verification is implemented, adult players will need to provide proof that they are old enough to play GTA Online, while younger players would be locked out entirely. Tez2's claims sound perfectly believable considering recent changes made across the internet thanks to the UK's Online Safety Act. While a lot of focus has been on porn sites needing to ask users for their ID, social media sites have been affected too. More Trending Bluesky, for instance, now demands you either provide your credit card details or a scan of your face to send direct messages. Any businesses that don't comply with the law not only face fines from Ofcom, but also the possibility of being shut down and unable to operate in the UK. The changes have proved unpopular enough to prompt over 400,000 people to sign a petition to have them repealed, citing concerns over cybersecurity and restrictions on free speech. Rockstar has not formally commented on the matter but considering GTA Online features a lot of mature content, including an in-game stirp club, it could very well be facing pressure to comply with the UK's laws. If age verification is implemented, then GTA 6 and its online mode would no doubt have to follow suit. GTA 6 is expected to make a lot – and we mean a lot – of money when it launches and Rockstar's not going to want its game to be barred from sale in a big market like the UK. Ozzy Osbourne's meaningful gift to huge rock star pictured in tribute post hours after private funeral
A TOP rock star has shared a brand new photo of the meaningful gift Ozzy Osbourne shared with him before his death. Yungblud, 27, enjoyed an incredibly close bond with Ozzy in the years leading up to his death with the Black Sabbath frontman acting as a mentor to the star - whose real name is Dominic Harrison - prior to his passing. 4 4 4 Now, in a new social media post following Ozzy's private funeral, Yungblud has shared a photo of the necklace which Ozzy gave to him back in 2022. Ozzy gave him the cross necklace in 2022 whilst he was recording a music video for his track, The Funeral. The pair enjoyed a close bond often likened to father and son with Yungblud going onto return the favour by gifting Ozzy his own custom-made cross necklace backstage at his final ever gig in Villa Park, Birmingham. Clearly a symbol of their bond, Yungblud has now shared a close-up image of the pendant alongside a heartfelt caption. He wrote: "Goodnight oz. your light will forever shine. I love you." It is understood that Yungblud gave a touching reading at his private funeral on Thursday. Ozzy was laid to rest next to the lake in his Buckinghamshire home. A wreath, which read: 'Ozzy f***ing Osbourne,' was placed by the bank of the water as 110 of Ozzy's nearest and dearest joined his wife Sharon and his children Jack, 39, Kelly, 40, Aimee, 41, and Louis, 50, who is Ozzy's son from his first marriage to Thelma Riley, for the service. A family friend told The Sun that Ozzy and Sharon's home was decorated with pictures of the Black Sabbath rocker - and that they had planned to give mourners a photograph of him to take home with them. They added: 'Ozzy's service was a beautiful tribute. As well as tears, there was laughter.' YUNGBLUD - teresa The road leading to Ozzy and Sharon's home, close to Gerrards Cross, was closed from 1pm. Guests were sent a simple black invitation with a picture of a cross that read: 'In loving memory of Ozzy Osbourne.' Mourners were transported from The Crowne Plaza and The Bull in Gerrards Cross to the house at 2pm, with the service starting at 3pm. Security teams were also in place to ensure the safety of those attending. A friend told The Sun: "There was a stage where people including Yungblud, who grew very close to Ozzy in recent years, were set to pay tribute to him. 'The day was incredibly emotional. Pictures of Ozzy were dotted throughout the house and a photograph of him was given to everyone who attended to take home with them.'
