3 stars from Oklahoma Sooners super regional win over Alabama
The Oklahoma Sooners have swept through the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, outscoring their opponents 47-5 through five games. The Sooners are playing their best ball of the season in the postseason and haven't lost a game since their trip to Gainesville to end the regular season.
Now, the Sooners head to their home away from home at Devon Park in Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series set to defend their four-straight national titles.
It's been a team effort for the Sooners, who have received contributions from the entire lineup this postseason. From the veterans on the roster to true freshmen, Oklahoma is finding success in the circle and at the plate. Who were the top performers in the Sooners super regional win over Alabama?
Here are the three stars from the weekend.
More: Social media reacts to Oklahoma's 13-2 win over Alabama to advance to WCWS
1. Sam Landry, P
Sam Landry threw a complete game shutout in game one of the series against Alabama. She allowed just six players to reach base and only once did a baserunner reach third base. Landry earned her 24th win of the season, striking out five in the process.
Her effort allowed Patty Gasso to have some flexibility with her game two and three approach if necessary.
Landry has been a star for the Sooners and if Oklahoma is going to win a national title this year, she'll lead the way from the circle.
2. Abigale Dayton, OF
Transfer outfielder Abigale Dayton scored two runs in Oklahoma's game one win on Friday night, one of which came on Kasidi Pickering's two-run home run. On Saturday, Dayton was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. She's provided strong defense in the outfield but came through in the clutch at the plate.
3. Gabbie Garcia, SS
Oklahoma's true freshman Gabbie Garcia has become a star in her first season in Norman. From playing a strong shortstop to providing power in the middle of the lineup, Garcia has simply become a big-time player in year one with the Sooners. Her two home runs in game two against Alabama gave her 20 homers on the season.
Honorable Mention - Kierston Deal
Oklahoma's pitching had become a point of contention heading into the postseason. Well, in the postseason, the Sooners pitching staff has stepped up, namely the rest of the group beyond Sam Landry. On Saturday, it was Kierston Deal, who provided a strong outing. She threw four innings, allowed three hits and two walks. Though two of the hits were home runs, she was able to mitigate much damage in her outing. Oklahoma needed Deal and company to step up in the postseason, and they've done just that.
Honorable Mention - Ella Parker
Ella Parker was an extra-base machine in Saturday's game two win. All three of her hits went for extra bases (two doubles and a home run), and she had three RBIs. Oklahoma's lineup has been really good in the postseason and Parker has been one of the key catalysts for the Sooners offense.

Ohio State sharp shooter Mathieu Grujicic goes off for Germany in Eurobasket U18 Tourney
The Ohio State basketball team is hoping to get back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the March Madness the last four seasons, and grab some momentum towards getting the program back among the elite in the league and country. If it's going to do it, it'll have to rely on some key returners, but also some new faces that will all have to mesh and become a team rather than a collection of individuals like what we've seen over the last few seasons. One of those new faces is incoming freshman Mathieu Grujicic from Germany. He's still working on some eligibility issues as an overseas player coming to the United Sates, but once he gets that all ironed out, he should be able to provide a scoring punch at multiple spots on the floor, much like what we've become accustomed to seeing with European players. Before then, Grujicic is playing for his country in the U18 Eurobasket Tournament and looking extremely productive. It's not quite the same level of competition, but there's no denying the abilities and multiple ways he can score. In the opening game for Germany, Grujicic scored 23 points, pulled down eight rebounds, had two assists, and one steal. Germany ultimately lost its opening round game, but it wasn't because of Grujicic. We have some highlights of his body of work in the game thanks to the Hoops HQ "X" account we think you'll enjoy. Grujicic has flown a little under the radar when it comes to incoming freshmen in the Big Ten, but if he can be anywhere near what we've seen in some of his highlights, he could surprise the opposition and provide another scorer to go with what we already know the Buckeyes have with some of those returning guys. We'll see if this skill set translates to the high level of big-time college basketball when things get going this winter. OKC Thunder jersey history No. 34 - Josh Huestis (2014-18)
The Oklahoma City Thunder (and the Seattle Supersonics before them) have 51 jersey numbers worn by the players who have suited up for the franchise since its founding at the start of the 1967-68 season. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Thunder Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. And while those Supersonics jerseys may not remain part of the franchise history should a new team be established in Seattle as was the case with the return of the Charlotte Hornets, they are part of the Thunder's history today. For this article, we continue with the 34th jersey number in the series, jersey No. 34, with 17 players in total having donned the jersey in the history of the franchise. The 15th of those players did so in the Oklahoma City Thunder era, forward alum Josh Huestis. After ending his college career at Stanford, Huestis was picked up with the 29th overall selection of the 2014 NBA Draft by the Thunder. He played all three seasons of his NBA career with OKC, leaving the league as a player in 2018. During his time suiting up for the Thunder, Huestis wore only jersey No. 34 and put up 2.5 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference. Red Sox' ‘uber-athletic' 1st-rounder cracks Keith Law's Top 60, along with 2 other prospects
A trio of Red Sox prospects have cracked Keith Law's latest Top 60 rankings of minor leaguers at The Athletic. First-round pitcher Kyson Witherspoon debuted at No. 54 overall, while Jhostynxon Garcia came in at No. 46 and top prospect Franklin Arias is all the way up to No. 9 with Law touting his 'All-Star upside.' Witherspoon is the new face on the list for the Red Sox though. Boston took the 20-year-old from Oklahoma with the 15th pick in this month's MLB draft and signed him for $5 million last weekend. Law loved the selection. 'Witherspoon was the top right-handed pitcher on my draft board this year, as the uber-athletic Oklahoma pitcher held 95+ deep into games and worked with a five-pitch mix that should end up with at least three above-average weapons,' he writes. 'His delivery features an unusual movement after separation where he brings his hand almost straight down, described to me by one evaluator as a 'waggle.' It hasn't inhibited his ability to repeat the delivery or throw strikes. I see at least a mid-rotation starter here, and his athleticism and easy velocity point to the potential for even more.' The radar gun was something that director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson pointed to after selecting Witherspoon as well. 'With Kyson, it's big velocity. And he's held it over a lot of innings with some really good breaking pitches,' Pearson said. 'Whether it's his cutter, slider, a lot of upside there to continue to maximize his mix. But a strike thrower with high velo and interesting secondary shapes.'
