Ambani's Reliance Jio delays India IPO, 2025 listing not on cards

NEW DELHI/SYDNEY: Indian telecom and digital giant
Reliance Jio
Platforms, led by billionaire
Mukesh Ambani
, has decided not to launch its IPO this year as planned, delaying one of the country's most anticipated stock offerings, two people familiar with the matter said.
Valued by analysts at over $100 billion, Jio wants to achieve higher revenues and a bigger subscriber base for its telecom business, and expand its other digital offerings, so that its valuation can increase further before an IPO, said the first source in describing the rationale for the delay.
Shares of its parent conglomerate
Reliance Industries
fell sharply after the Reuters report and were down 1.8% in afternoon Mumbai trade. Given its significant weighting in key indexes, Reliance's fall also dragged the broader Indian market into negative territory.
Nearly 80% of Jio Platforms' latest annual revenue of $17.6 billion came from its telecom business --
Reliance Jio Infocomm
, India's biggest player. But Ambani is also fast-expanding his other niche digital businesses focused on developing apps, connected devices and AI solutions for enterprises.
Reliance Jio is also set to lock horns with Elon Musk, who is expected to launch
Starlink
internet service in India in coming months. Jio, which counts Google and Meta among investors, has also partnered with Nvidia to develop AI infrastructure.
In 2019, Ambani said Jio will "move towards" a listing within five years. And last year, Reuters reported Reliance was targeting a 2025 Mumbai listing for Jio Platforms, aiming for it to be India's biggest ever IPO.
"Jio (IPO) is not going to happen this year, it's just not possible. The company wants the business to be more mature," said the first source.
Both the sources, who declined to be identified as the strategy is confidential, said Reliance had appointed no bankers so far to discuss a potential stock market offering.
Reliance did not respond to Reuters queries.
The telecom business, Jio Infocomm, had struggled as tariff hikes led to some churn in its subscriber base but has returned to a growth path this year. It has more than 488 million subscribers.
Indian brokerage IIFL Capital said in April it was cutting Jio's core profit estimate for 2025-26 by 3% due to "higher costs and lower flow-through from the next tariff hike assumed in late 2025". It also cut its valuation estimate from $117 billion to $111 billion, though Jefferies values it at $136 billion.
The first source declined to share the valuation that Jio had been targeting in the IPO, but said it was already "easily above $100 billion".
India's IPO market had its best-ever year in 2024, with $20.5 billion raised, second only to the U.S.
Amid trade wars and Middle East tensions, market sentiment turned jittery, but is recovering. India is the world's No. 2 IPO market with $5.86 billion raised by June this year, accounting for the 12% of total proceeds globally, LSEG data shows.
Reuters has previously reported the Reliance Retail IPO was being delayed as the company wants to address operational challenges, including less than ideal earnings per square feet of space for the retailer, which runs India's biggest grocery store network of 3,000 supermarkets.
The Reliance Retail IPO was unlikely before 2027 or 2028, the person added, without elaborating on the reasons.
In recent years, Ambani, Asia's richest man, raised $25 billion collectively for digital, telecom and retail businesses from the likes of KKR, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, General Atlantic and Silver Lake.
"The investors are not upset (about IPO delays). They know the money is sitting in front of them," said the first source.

Technical textiles is a potential area for investments in T.N. by Taiwan companies: official

Technical textiles is a potential sector that can see significant investments in Tamil Nadu by Taiwan companies, said V. Arun Roy, Secretary, Industries, Investment Promotion and Commerce Department, Tamil Nadu. Speaking at the Tamil Nadu – Taiwan Technical Textiles Partnership Summit, organised in Coimbatore on Monday by the Confederation of Indian Industry, Tiruppur Exporters Association, and the Tamil Nadu government, he said Tamil Nadu has a large investment from Taiwan companies in electronics and footwear sectors. Since 2021, the Tamil Nadu government and Taiwan companies have signed 21 MoUs for $ 1.4 billion investment in the State. Technical textiles can be the next potential sector. The PM MITRA Park at Virudhunagar will have dedicated area for technical textiles apart from plug and play facilities for technical textiles. Indian and Taiwan companies should look at investing in the park. Garment exports from Tiruppur and Coimbatore districts grew 20% in 2024-2025 to touch ₹45,000 crores and registered 12 % growth in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The exports are expected to increase 15% this year. However, 'future of the textile industry lies beyond the cotton sector. We should tap opportunities in technical textiles and MMF. It offers more opportunities in value addition,' he said. Director of Handlooms, Tamil Nadu, Maheshwari Ravikumar said the Tamil Nadu government was in the process of issuing an order to offer capital subsidy for the processing sector; will introduce courses in technical textiles in polytechnics and industrial training institutes, and was studying the recommendations submitted in a report by Wazir Advisors to promote sportswear and athleisure production in the State. Over 55 one-to-one business meetings were held in Coimbatore on Monday between Indian companies and Taiwan companies as a part of the Summit.

India's listed startups raised over ₹44,000 crore from public markets in FY25: report

Venture-backed Indian startups raised over ₹44,000 crore ($5.3 billion) in FY25 from public markets via IPOs, FPOs, and QIPs, marking a structural shift in startup fundraising lifecycle in India. According to investment bank Rainmaker Group's RainGauge Index FY25 Annual Update, public markets outpaced private capital for late-stage fundraising, solidifying their role as the dominant source of growth capital. The money raised from public markets was two times more than private late-stage capital. The year also saw a record ₹20,000+ Crore in secondary exits as PE/VC firms like Peak XV and TPG harvested early bets through block and bulk deals. 'FY25 didn't just test India's startup listings, it matured them,' said Kashyap Chanchani, Managing Partner, The Rainmaker Group. 'The public market has become the preferred playground for India's breakout companies. We've now seen the full arc - the IPO frenzy, the valuation winter, and now a clear re-rating driven by fundamentals. This is the age of seasoning. The market is no longer listening to stories, it's pricing in substance. India's innovation economy has hit a new gear, one where companies with predictable earnings, durable moats, and institutional-grade governance will dominate,' he added. The report also noted that despite the early-year correction and record FII outflows [around ₹78,000 Crore in Q1], foreign investors returned strongly by Q4, driven by rate-cut expectations and India's steady macro indicators. The year witnessed Zomato joining the NIFTY50 and SENSEX, Swiggy entering the NIFTY Next 50, and Nykaa, PB Fintech, Ola Electric inducted into the NIFTY MidCap150. 'With IPOs no longer delivering inflated valuations or easy exits, startups will have to align with public market expectations much earlier in their lifecycle,' said a statement from the company. 'Sector-specific valuation guardrails are firmly in place with two-year forward EV/EBITDA multiples now providing structured lenses across internet, SaaS, BFSI, and consumer brands. Analyst-grade metrics, unit economics, transparency, and sustainable growth stories will need to be baked in from day one. Startups must now build with capital efficiency, narrative credibility, and governance readiness and not just valuation hype,' it further read.
