New Jersey college student studying mechanical engineering has a passion for drifting: "I love the feeling"

CBS News23-04-2025

The world of professional motorsports has become more inclusive in recent years, but women and girls still only represent about 10% of participation across all levels. That's according to the organization More than Equal.
One college student in South Jersey is working hard under the hood to change that.
Peyton Young is a junior at The College of New Jersey studying mechanical engineering, but her true passion is drifting.
Drifting is a competitive driving style that involves intentionally sliding sideways through corners while managing to maintain control of the car.
The harder you hit each turn, the higher you score.
"The motion of being sideways and the g-forces of it. I just, I love the feeling," she said.
Peyton got her first taste of drifting from a friend at a local track, and she's been obsessed ever since, saving up enough money to purchase her first drift car, a BMW E46. She works for hours every day modifying and making improvements.
"I'm teaching myself completely. I knew nothing going in. And that's OK," she said. "You don't have to know. There's YouTube. There's videos. Reach out to other people. That's what I do. There's nothing wrong with asking for help."
Peyton's dad, Dan, said he had no idea his daughter was so into cars until she opened up about her passion project.
"It's surprising. It's almost like, who's this kid? he said. "She's like, 'Oh, I was working on the differential,' and I'm like, what? How does she even know what that is?"
In the world of competitive car racing, which is often dominated by men, Peyton said she's received plenty of pushback, but she has a message for any young girls dreaming about getting behind the wheel.
"You can do it. Don't listen to what anybody else says. You're able to," she said. "It doesn't matter what they say, what they feel. All that matters is you. At the end of the day, make sure you're happy. Don't do anything to please anybody else."

Deion Sanders rehabilitating in weighted vest, promises to return to job soon

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders has been rehabilitating in a weighted vest with the help of his son Deion Jr. as he tries to come back from an unspecified health issue and return to his job in Boulder. Sanders, 57, provided two recent updates on Instagram, including one on Saturday that showed him wearing a weighted vest next to Deion Jr. 'Every little step I take My son @deionsandersjr has been there so we've decided to keep on stepping!' Sanders wrote in the post Saturday. '#CoachPrime coming to a stadium sold out soon.' In another post from June 26, he used his situation to promote an energy drink sponsor in the same vest. '1 step closer Everyday,' he wrote. 'I'm Walking it out! Our Team is working their butts off therefore I've got to match that (fire) they have!' Sanders Sr. has been away from his coaching job since April as he dealt with his health issue at his estate in Texas. He did not attend Colorado's annual youth and high school camps in June even though operating such camps is listed in his Colorado contract as one of his official duties. In May, he was unable to attend the wedding of former Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter in Tennessee. 'He know why we couldn't be there,' Sanders Jr. said on his YouTube channel after Hunter's wedding. Sanders Sr. also canceled a speaking engagement in Florida scheduled for June 8. The timing of his return to campus remains unclear, but he is scheduled to appear at a Big 12 Conference media event in Frisco, Texas on July 9. Wearing weighted vests helps build strength and endurance. They also help stimulate the growth of new bone cells, according to Harvard Medical School. Deion Jr. said in a video posted on YouTube June 21 that his father was 'back active, moving around' and has made progress. Sanders Sr. previously said on social media on June 11 that 'everything is OKAY' and that he would provide a full update upon his return to Colorado. In late May, Sanders Sr. appeared on a podcast with former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel and said that 'what I'm dealing with right now is at a whole 'nother level' but said he's coming back after losing about 14 pounds. Sanders previously battled issues with blood clots in his legs and had to miss a Pac-12 Conference media event in Las Vegas because of it in July 2023. Colorado opens the 2025 football at home against Georgia Tech Aug. 29. Follow reporter Brent Schrotenboer @Schrotenboer. Email: bschrotenb@

What drew the Boston Celtics to Max Shulga in the draft?

Max Shulga is the latest rookie to join the Boston Celtics. He was the 57th overall pick, making him one of the last players to enter the NBA out of the 2025 class. Brad Stevens once again prioritized a player with multiple years in the collegiate ranks, as Shulga is a five-year collegiate product, having spent three seasons with Utah State and two with VCU. When speaking to the media after the second round, Celtics Vice President of Basketball Operations, Mike Zarren, detailed what Shulga brings to the table and why Boston was drawn to the impressive shooter. Shulga played in 35 games last season, averaging 15 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4 assists per game while shooting 38.7% from 3-point range. 'Max is a tough guy who can handle and shoot and elite toughness,' Zarren said. 'He's been all over the world. He moved to Spain when he was 13, I think, to play basketball. ... But he's just a winner. Was the A-10 player of the year. I think they won 18 of their last 20 games or something like that, was the A-10 player of the year.' Shulga will undoubtedly join the Maine Celtics for the upcoming season. Late second-round picks often reside in the G League for their rookie and, potentially, sophomore seasons. Shulga has an exciting style of play that could fit with what Joe Mazzulla wants to do next season. Unfortunately, Boston's guard rotation is already stacked, which will make life even harder for him as he looks to break into the NBA. The Celtics have multiple players who have come through their G League pipeline. Therefore, Shulga can remain confident that if he impresses the coaching staff will provide him a route to NBA minutes. Watch the "Taylor Talks Celtics" podcast on: YouTube: Website:
