Calgary will be the headquarters for Independent Agency Police Service in Alberta
Alberta announced the creation of a new provincial police task force on Wednesday, with Calgary as its headquarters. Article content The police service follows legislation passed in the spring that allowed for the birth of a new agency, called the Independent Agency Police Service, overseen by a board of civilians, and a Crown corporation, both of which would operate at 'arm's length' of the government. Article content Article content Article content 'The IAPS will be able to provide targeted support, working closely with police services and municipal and First Nations leaders to identify where additional resources are needed,' Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis said at a news conference on Wednesday. Article content The province also named former deputy Calgary police chief Sat Parhar, who has spent more than 25 years as a police officer, as the head of the agency. Article content Article content 'It's an honour to take on this role and help shape a modern police service built for Alberta,' Parhar said. Article content 'My focus from Day 1 will be on setting high standards for professionalism, building strong relationships with our partners and ensuring this service reflects the needs and priorities of the communities we serve.' Article content Article content The province hasn't provided an exact timeline or cost of starting and operating the new service. 'There is a labour component of this that we're going to be working out,' Ellis said. Article content The province will draw police officers from Alberta Sheriffs, which currently performs a few policing responsibilities but doesn't have a civilian oversight board. Article content The fate of the approximately 1,200 sheriffs hired by Alberta hangs in the balance, as the province has previously indicated that it plans to hire 600 sheriffs for the new police force, and dedicate the money that is set for the agency to operating the latest service. Article content The new force will not replace the RCMP, Ellis said, but will work alongside the federal agency to provide more options to municipalities, some of which have complained about longer wait times and rising costs of contracting with the federal police service.

Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak Responds to Métis-Nation-Saskatchewan Concerns
OTTAWA, ON, July 2, 2025 /CNW/ - Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak (LFMO), the national voice of Métis women and gender-diverse people, sees this moment in Métis Nation–Saskatchewan (MN-S) as a chance to strengthen rather than strain our shared commitment to genuine self-government. Democracy flourishes when every citizen's voice is welcomed and when our systems reflect the values that have guided Métis communities for generations: transparency, accountability, and mutual respect. Too often, we see self-governing bodies blur the line between democracy and bureaucracy. When internal rules and technicalities are used to shut people out or override the voices of citizens, it goes against the spirit of self-determination. Women face unnecessary barriers and lateral violence while carrying out their elected duties. Their perseverance reminds us that strong governance is built on diverse voices working together. Real democracy is built on transparency, fairness, and accountability to the people and not on power held behind closed doors. Our Métis Traditional laws were never meant to serve individual interests; they were built to protect the community, ensure fairness, and uplift all voices, especially those most often pushed to the margins. "We must remember that the right to lead comes from the people, not from policy documents. If we lose sight of that, we lose the very heart of who we are as Métis." said Melanie Omeniho, President of LFMO, "When we stay grounded in community wisdom and Métis ways of governing, we honour our ancestors and create space for future generations to thrive." True self-government relies on clear separation between political leadership and administrative processes, ensuring decision-making remains open and Métis citizen driven. By upholding election results, welcoming dialogue, and bringing Elders, youth, 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, and regional perspectives to the table, MN-S can model the best of Métis democracy. We must commit to rebuilding Métis governments rooted in kinship, mutual respect, and accountability, creating spaces where all citizens, inclusive of Métis women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, can lead with courage and speak out against injustice without fear of reprisal. We know our communities deserve better. LFMO stands ready to support all efforts that centre honesty, respect, and collective responsibility. We believe the path ahead can reaffirm our Nation's strength and deepen trust across every corner of the Métis Motherland. LFMO speaks as the national and international voice for Métis Women and gender-diverse people across the Métis Motherland, spanning Ontario westward to British Columbia. Les Femmes Michif Otipemisiwak aims to consult, promote, and represent the personal, spiritual, social, cultural, political, and economic interests and aspirations of women and gender diverse people.

Statement by Prime Minister Carney on Canada Day Français
Ottawa, On, July 1, 2025 /CNW/ - "One hundred and fifty-eight years ago, a few provinces bet on the idea that they'd be stronger together than they ever could be apart. They were right, and so they became a new federation that's now grown into our strong, bilingual, multicultural, and ambitious country. "Our story didn't begin at Confederation. For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have called this land home, and our country's next chapter will be written together in true partnership with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis. "Our shared history has been marked by inflection points. Moments where Canada has had to step up – on the battlefield of Vimy, on the beaches of Normandy, in the homes of Gander after 9/11. "Now, we face another such moment. The world is changing. Old friendships are fraying, our economy is being buffeted by a trade crisis, and our values are being tested by attacks on democracy and freedoms. "In a more divided and dangerous world, Canadians are uniting. Together, we will build one Canadian economy – connected by major projects, powered by Canadian energy, transformed by Canadian technology, and crafted by Canadian workers. Together, we're breaking down barriers across the country so you can buy Canadian everywhere and work anywhere. Together, we'll rebuild, rearm, and reinvest in our Armed Forces – because Canadian leadership is defined not only by the strength of our values, but also by the value of our strength. "This is the greatest nation on earth. Our destiny is to make it greater still – not by what we say, but by what we do. Happy Canada Day."
