Under PM Modi, India continues to champion the cause of Global South
Indian foreign policy demonstrated vibrancy and pragmatism, yielding significant achievements that also enhanced India's global stature and goodwill.
The MEA highlighted the third edition of the 'Voice of Global South Summit' hosted by India in virtual format under the overarching theme 'An Empowered Global South for a Sustainable Future'.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Heads of State/Government session and in his address proposed a "Global Development Compact" to serve as a comprehensive framework to promote sustainable development in the Global South. The compact focuses on trade, capacity building, technology sharing, and financial support, and aims to empower the Global South and ensure that development is both balanced and sustainable.
The Leaders' session was followed by 10 Ministerial sessions: Health Ministers, Youth Ministers, Commerce/Trade Ministers, Information & Technology The Summit saw the participation of 173 dignitaries from 123 Global South countries, including 21 Heads of State/Government and 34 Foreign Ministers.
The event was the first plurilateral Summit hosted by the Prime Minister after winning a historic third term and swearing-in of a new government.
"Having held within the first 100 days of the new Government, the Summit reflected India's sincerity and commitment in advancing the collective developmental journey of the Global South, and the priority accorded by the Prime Minister to engaging with the leaders and countries of the Global South," the MEA stated.
Another highlight of 2024 was the 'Summit of the Future', a high-level event held during the High-level Week of the 79th UNGA in September, bringing different world leaders together.
Prime Minister Modi addressed the Summit and presented India's human-centric approach to sustainable development. The Prime Minister also expressed solidarity with countries of the Global South and called for balanced regulations to promote safe and responsible use of technology. He noted that India is open to sharing its digital public infrastructure for greater public good.
The Prime Minister had intervened that 'reform is the key to relevance' and that 'global action must match global ambition'.
The MEA mentioned that bilateral engagements with like-minded partners were complemented by India's proactive initiatives and leadership in plurilateral and multilateral platforms.
"India remained steadfast in expanding its strategic autonomy, championing meaningful reforms of multilateral institutions, addressing the priorities of the Global South, and safeguarding its security within the framework of the rules-based international order. These efforts underscored India's commitment to shaping a more equitable and inclusive global governance framework," it mentioned.
Earlier in June 2024, PM Modi, while participating in the Outreach Session of the G7 Summit in Italy, had emphasised that technology must be guided by a human-centric approach, highlighting India's success in leveraging digital advancements for public service delivery.
He underscored India's commitment to "AI for All" advocating for AI's role in fostering global progress and well-being. He also stressed the importance of prioritising the concerns of the Global South, particularly Africa, recalling India's role in securing the African Union's permanent membership in the G20.

The official noted that Apple has alternatives but the primary responsibility lies with the company (Apple) to ensure that the manufacturer doesn't impact production. What was the job of Chinese engineers who went back? According to reports, the 300 Chinese engineers who were recalled by Beijing, were responsible designing the factory, handling the assembly line and training employees. The Indian government said it was monitoring the production capacity of Foxconn, one of the few companies part of the Narendra Modi government's PLI scheme. Its must be noted that China is a global manufacturing and industrial powerhouses, and most of the equipment required to assemble mobile phones comes from there. These machines require specialized training to operate, which is usually imparted by Chinese experts who work for the manufacturer of these devices. How India plans to boost iPhone manufacturing? While a decade ago, iPhone manufacturing in India was practically negligible Apple began to assemble iPhones in the country from 2017 with newer models now being manufactured at Indian plants. Apple is strengthening its footprint in India as it proves to be a key market with its high population and rapidly growing economy. Foxconn operates iPhone manufacturing plants in India's southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana, and its estimated that iPhones worth $14 billion, were assembled in India in the 2024-25 fiscal year, which means that one out of seven iPhones sold across the world carries a 'Made in India' tag. The Union government has launched the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme which is expected to attract gadget making moguls other than Apple, to establish their presence in the country. Two flagship stores were launched by Apple in Mumbai and Delhi in 2023 and Apple indicated that they are now planning to open four more retail stores in Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai.

The President can nominate up to 12 members from the fields of literature, science, art and social service to the Upper House of Parliament. The nominations have been made to fill vacancies created by the retirement of earlier nominated members. New Delhi: Senior advocate Ujjwal Nikam, former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, social worker Master and historian Meenakshi Jain were nominated by President Droupadi Murmu to the Rajya Sabha. The selection of Nikam was long due as he worked in high-profile cases such as the Gulshan Kumar murder, the Shakti Mill gang rape, the Marine Drive rape, the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, and the 26/11 terror attack. The special public prosecutor was routinely in the news during the trial of Akmal Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist arrested during the 2008 terror attack. He had later drawn condemnation after he revealed that Kasab had never demanded mutton biryani during his trial. Born in North Maharashtra's Jalgaon, he started practicing as a lawyer in 1979. His father was a judge but he shot to fame for the first time when he was appointed as special public prosecutor in the 1993 serial blasts case. Nikam's proximity with the BJP dispensation grew after the 26/11 case. The Narendra Modi government conferred the Padma Shri to him in 2016. Last year, the BJP dropped two-term sitting MP Poonam Mahajan from the high-profile Mumbai North Central seat and instead gave the poll ticket to Nikam. His electoral debut ended with a loss as Congress Varsha Gaikwad trounced him by a margin of 16,500-plus votes. PM Modi hailed the nominations made by the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 'Shri Ujjwal Nikam's devotion to the legal field and to our Constitution is exemplary. He has not only been a successful lawyer but also been at the forefront of seeking justice in important cases. During his entire legal career, he has always worked to strengthen Constitutional values and ensure common citizens are always treated with dignity,' he posted on X. A retired Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Shringla had served as the foreign secretary between January 2020 and April 2022. He had navigated the Indian diplomatic landscape during the Covid pandemic. Shringla was recently part of India's outreach to the Islamic world after Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack. As the Indian ambassador to the US, Shringla was credited with Modi's public event Howdy Modi in Houston and maintaining warm relationship with US President Donald Trump in his first term. He was later made the chief G20 coordinator for India's G20 Presidency in 2023 and went on to help the Modi government in organising the G20 Summit in New Delhi that year. In Shringla's biography 'Not An Accidental Rise,' author Dipmala Roka has mentioned how he managed administrative and diplomatic efforts to manage the supply chain of essentials, negotiating for the smooth supply chain of drugs and other essentials. The book further mentions that when the Modi government scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution in 2019, Shringla met 400 senators and traveled to 22 states in the US. His name had come up as a BJP candidate from Darjeeling in the last year's general elections, but the party stuck with the sitting MP Raju Bista. A former teacher and social worker of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Sadanand Master had unsuccessfully contested the 2016 and 2021 assembly poll as a BJP candidate. Currently, he is seving as the BJP state president of the Kerala unit. The Sangh veteran survived an attack by CPI(M) goons in 1994 but lost both his legs. Despite his state, he remained active in politics and the BJP presented his case to highlight the Left's brutality in Kerala. 'The BJP is making inroads in Kerala after the first Lok Sabha victory (of Suresh Gopi in Thrissur), His selection is politically important to send a message to cadres fighting against the Left rule for the last two decades,' a BJP functionary told ThePrint. Meenakshi Jain, a renowned historian of medieval and colonial India, is daughter of Times of India's former editor Girilal Jain. She is a former associate professor of History at Gargi College, Delhi University, as well as a former fellow of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, and a former member of the Governing Council of the Indian Council of Historical Research. Jain is currently a senior fellow at the Indian Council of Social Science Research. Army Denies Drone Strikes On Insurgent Group ULFA-I Camp In Myanmar
New Delhi: The Indian Army has denied it had carried out drone attacks on the eastern headquarters of the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) in Myanmar. The banned ULFA-I on Sunday claimed that its eastern headquarters in Myanmar had been targeted by the Indian Army with drones in the early hours. The banned outfit in a press statement claimed that in these cross-border strikes, their 19 cadres have been killed and another 19 injured. Reports indicate that senior ULFA (I) commander Nayan Medhi was killed in the attack, and some cadres of Manipuri insurgent groups, including Revolutionary People's Front (RPF), which is the political wing of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of Manipur present at the camp, were also killed and some injured. However, in an official statement, the India Army has denied these claims. "There are no inputs with the Indian Army on such an operation," Lt Col Mahendra Rawat, PRO Defence Guwahati, told IANS. ULFA (I), headed by Paresh Barua, is now left with only one senior functionary, Arunodoy Dohotiya, who is in Myanmar. Another senior ULFA (I) commander operating out of Myanmar camps, Rupom Asom, was arrested by Assam Police in May. Sources said Baruah, who has deep links with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and was reportedly staying in bordering areas of China-Myanmar-India (Arunachal Pradesh), is at the lowest point of his insurgency activity. People familiar with the matter told IANS that these attacks on ULFA (I) headquarters could be due to the infighting amongst these banned outfits. Notably, Myanmar, which is presently being ruled by the Tatmadaw (Army), is witnessing a spate of attacks by several militant outfits, and the India-Myanmar border has been used several times by these proscribed outfits, such as ULFA (I), to set up their camps there. The fighting near the border has been a matter of deep concern for the Indian security establishment. In May 2025, at least 10 militants were killed in an encounter with security forces near the India-Myanmar border in Manipur's Chandel district.
