Gary Lineker accuses Prem ref of 'making it about him' after latest controversy
Gary Lineker has criticised referee Anthony Taylor for putting himself at the centre of attention during PSG's Club World Cup semi-final win over Bayern Munich. The Premier League official came under fire after issuing two controversial red cards late in the match, which finished 2-0 to PSG after Jamal Musiala's sickening injury.
Taylor first dismissed Willian Pacho in the 82nd minute for a high challenge on Leon Goretzka, with the PSG defender raking his boot down the Bayern midfielder's shin. Then, in stoppage time, Lucas Hernandez was also sent off following what appeared to be an innocuous clash with Raphael Guerreiro.
Hernandez's arm made light contact with Guerreiro's face as he held off the Portuguese star, but the incident looked far from malicious. Taylor's decision left many viewers - including Lineker and his The Rest Is Football podcast co-hosts - puzzled.
"I think the first sending off, Pacho, was the right decision," Lineker said. "The second one, I thought he was just putting his arm up to fend him off. I mean really, a red card for that?"
"It's not good enough. It's not good enough," Micah Richards said in agreement. "You've got to go to the screen. Anyone who has played football, or even if you haven't played football, [knows that] when you put your arms up it's to protect yourself, to get your body in [the way].
"That's what you're taught as a youngster coming through. To give a red card for that... it didn't matter in the end [because PSG won], but still."
Lineker added: "There's something about Anthony. I've never met him, I don't know him. I'm sure he's fine off the pitch. But he's just got that... it looks like his ego. He's like an old fashioned referee. It's almost like he wants it to be about him."
Despite being reduced to nine men in the closing stages, PSG secured their place in the Club World Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembele. Doue broke the deadlock in the 78th minute, cutting inside from the right and drilling a low shot past Manuel Neuer. Dembele then wrapped up the result deep into stoppage time, finishing off a swift counter-attack led by Achraf Hakimi.
PSG will now face Real Madrid, who edged out Borussia Dortmund 3-2 at the weekend, in the last four on Wednesday. The winner will progress to Sunday's final to take on either Chelsea or Fluminense.
The referee for the final has yet to be confirmed, but PSG fans might well be now hoping Taylor isn't selected after his performance. Chelsea supporters may feel the same, as he has become a divisive figure amongst their fanbase following several high-profile decisions that went against them in recent seasons.
He's faced criticism from others as well. After the 2023 Europa League final, then-Roma manager Jose Mourinho infamously confronted Taylor in a car park, and the following day, Roma fans were seen verbally abusing the referee as he passed through Budapest airport.

Shelbourne 'toughest draw' we could have got
Linfield manager David Healy says their Champions League first qualifying round tie against Shelbourne will be a "challenge" for his Irish Premiership holders take on the League of Ireland Premier Division winners in the first leg at Tolka Park on Wednesday (19:45 BST).The two sides then face off at Windsor Park on Wednesday, 16 July in the return leg, with both games live on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport Damien Duff's abrupt departure as Shels boss last month, the Dubliners have appointed former West Ham and Republic of Ireland defender Joey O'Brien on a long-term deal. "When the draw was made, out of the four or five possibles we could have got I think Shelbourne is the toughest draw we could have got," he told BBC's Sportsound programme."You don't become champions over a team like Shamrock Rovers by not being a good side. They're a top side they have top players all over the pitch and it's going to be a challenge for us. "They've changed their manager, so we need to look at their recent games and see if there are any sort of tweaks in personnel and tactics."

Premier League icon looks unrecognisable as he posts throwback photo from his teenage years in a comparison with Boris Becker
Premier League fans couldn't believe their eyes as a legend of the top flight shared a photo of his teenage self. The German was congratulating compatriot Boris Becker on the 40th anniversary of becoming the youngest player ever to win Wimbledon. Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp took to Instagram on Monday morning to post a photo of 17-year-old Becker with his trophy on Centre Court in 1985. The 58-year-old shared it alongside one of himself enjoying a drink at the same age. '@borisbeckerofficial vs me at 17… aged like a fine wine,' he wrote under the images. 'Time flies! 'Congratulations my friend on your 40th anniversary of becoming the youngest player to ever win @ wimbledon until today. What a legend!' Klopp shocked the footballing world when he announced in January of last year that he would be stepping down from his role as Reds manager a the end of the 2023-24 campaign. He admitted that he was 'running out of energy' and wanted to spend more time with his family. The exhaustion, stress and relentlessness of life as Liverpool boss, in addition to becoming a grandfather for the first time, led him to make the decision to leave Anfield after nine successful years. He was rumoured as being among the favourites to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid but Mail Sport understands that was never likely. Some thought he might take a dip into international management - most likely the Germany or England job - and it remains to be seen if he would ever consider that. Klopp started as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer in January and has a contract which runs until 2029. Last year, he said: 'I work, but not what I did before. I'm not just lying around, although sometimes I am. I don't miss anything. 'Other top coaches won't be doing this forever either. The next generation is already out there. At some point, it will be up to them to start developing and changing football. 'There are already a lot of people from back then who are getting a taste of it. And more are coming because they're that age now. I'm really happy to watch them. 'And if I can help them with advice and support, I'm happy to do so. They probably think that after working with me for a while: If he can do it, we can do it too. It can't be that difficult.'

Luuk de Jong sees Rangers talks leaked by PSV as real Patati transfer fee named amid Aribo murmur
Business is ramping up for Russell Martin with the Champions League qualifiers rapidly approaching PSV Eindhoven boss Peter Bosz admits he HAS spoken to Luuk de Jong about Rangers as he looks to keep the veteran striker a the club. Reports in the Netherlands had suggested that the former Barcelona, Newcastle United and Sevilla frontman would be "open" to a move to Ibrox this summer. PSV have returned to training and offered de Jong a new deal and facilities for the close season but the 34-year-old has yet to give his answer over extending his stay in Eindhoven. And Bosz admits he remains in contract with the frontman - with the Scottish Premiership side making it to the agenda during their phone calls. De Telegraaf on murmurs over a move to the Scottish Premiership. The boss said: "He knows that I would really like to keep him. I did talk to him about that on the phone. "I don't want to bombard him with messages. I don't want to tire him with that. "He knows what I think of him, what the club thinks of him. So he knows how much we want to keep him." Maccabi Tel Aviv's 21-year-old winger Weslley Patati has also been floated as a target by reports in Israel with Rangers also pursuing his teammate Dor Turgeman. AZ and the UAE clubs are said to have submitted offers up already to the value of €4m (£3.5m) – but that the Tel Aviv club aren't entertaining that and want €10m (£8.6m) before they'll consider selling him. But former Maccabi star Eyal Berkovic has warned the club they will have to lower their price tag - or face a rebellion from the Brazilian in pre-season. He told 103FM's sports program: "Israel is a transitory place. If Patati receives an offer, Maccabi Tel Aviv has a big problem. "No team will pay ten million euros, and then they are left with a sad player. They need to find the price that everyone will be happy with. "A new contract won't help. Even if today he earns 300-400 thousand euros and you give him 700, he will be sad." "If I am Patati now, and there is an offer for me of €5m (£4.3m) from Girona, I come to Maccabi and say - don't bother me. I stop smiling. Do you want me, a Brazilian, to stop smiling? I am injured, sick, I don't care, I want to go. "How much did they buy him for, €1m? You tripled the money, you quadrupled it, thank you very much." It's one that will catch the eye of Rangers fans - and potentially Russell Martin - with Joe Aribo set to leave Southampton this summer. The Ibrox boss is a big fan of the playmaker from his time at St Mary's and after suffering his second relegation since leaving Ibrox behind in 2022 reports south of the border suggest he will leave in a "cut-price" deal. The 28-year-old is in the final year of his contract and TeamTalk report Saints chiefs are open to offers.
