Company director loses RM1.4 million to fake investment syndicate

IPOH: A company director lost RM1.4 million after being duped by a syndicate offering fake investment trading partnerships.
The ordeal began when the 75-year-old man received a call from a woman on April 15, offering him a partnership in a company to purchase goods from another company based overseas.
After verifying that the company had been operating since 1989, the man agreed to the offer. He was then asked to download an app linked to the company, which purportedly sold luxury goods.
Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the man was told he would earn a 30 per cent commission if customers bought the goods, but he had to pay for the items himself.
"The man paid a deposit of RM22,122 via a cash deposit machine into a company bank account.
"Believing in the promised returns, the complainant went on to transfer a total of RM1.47 million into six different company bank accounts via online transfers and by visiting bank counters," he said in a statement tonight.
Noor Hisam said the victim only realised he had been scammed when he received no returns on the funds transferred between April 17 and May 16.
He lodged a police report last Sunday.

Johari: RM1.4b over five years to replant ageing oil palm trees

JOHOR BARU: Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government is expected to allocate RM1.4 billion over the next five years to support smallholders in replanting ageing oil palm trees. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said today that the initiative aligns with the government's goal of strengthening Malaysia's position as the world's second-largest palm oil producer. "The parliamentary debate on the 13MP begins tomorrow, and we expect valuable feedback from members of parliament." Johari added that the ministry is making a strong push to assist smallholders with replanting. He said about RM1.4 billion will be required over five years — not annually — to encourage smallholders to rejuvenate aging plantations with higher-yielding varieties. He said this after officiating the Umno Johor Baru conference here, accompanied by division chief Datuk Yahya Jaafar. He was responding to questions about the 13MP, which was tabled in Parliament on Thursday by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. While tabling the 13MP, Anwar reaffirmed the government's resolve to revitalise strategic sectors, including agricultural commodities, the halal industry, and Islamic finance, by boosting productivity in palm oil, rubber, and cocoa through modern technologies such as mechanisation, automation, robotics and targeted R&D. Johari, who also serves as the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister, said an aggressive replanting initiative would boost Malaysia's export potential and strengthen its global market share. "Malaysia's commodity exports stand at about RM115 billion, and this replanting initiative is expected to contribute to our export growth. "If we can upgrade and replant large areas of ageing oil palm trees, it will boost our capacity and competitiveness in the global palm oil market."

Govt allocates RM1.4B for oil palm replanting under 13MP

JOHOR BAHRU: The government will allocate RM1.4 billion over five years to support oil palm replanting for smallholders under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), announced Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani. The funding aims to replace ageing and less productive trees, ensuring the sustainability of Malaysia's palm oil industry. Johari said, 'The parliamentary debate for 13MP starts Monday, and we expect feedback. Replanting helps maintain Malaysia as the world's second-largest palm oil producer, with exports currently at RM115 billion.' Last week, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasised advancing agro-commodities through modern technology like automation and R&D under the 13MP. - Bernama

Woman threatened by Ah Long after debt-ridden husband disappears

Michael Chong with a few of the victims at the press conference held at Wisma MCA in Kuala Lumpur. .—ONG SOON HIN/The Star Reporter : Gek San KUALA LUMPUR: A woman from Seri Kembangan is pleading for loan sharks to stop harassing her family after her husband absconded overseas, leaving behind unpaid debts and a trail of threats. The 29-year-old administrative executive who wanted to be known as Choo, said her 26-year-old husband was sent to Hong Kong by his company on June 18 and was supposed to return on July 16. However, he has been missing since and has not contacted his family. "He didn't tell me about the business trip, only my father-in-law. I only found out about his return date through his company," she said at a press conference on Wednesday (30 July), accompanied by MCA public services and complaints department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong. She said that from June 20, her family began receiving threatening calls from loan sharks, claiming her husband had borrowed RM2,000 and now owed them RM8,000 with interest. The callers threatened to splash red paint on their house and set it on fire. "We've been married for over a year and have a 15-month-old daughter. Despite asking him many times, he never told us why he needed to borrow money," she said. She added that the loan sharks also shared personal details and photos of her and her family on social media. A police report has been lodged. She added that earlier this year, her family had helped her husband settle a RM100,000 debt. Meanwhile, a 48-year-old woman from Cheras is also seeking help after her family was harassed over her son's borrowings from loan sharks. The woman known as Wong, a labourer, said her 26-year-old son, a salesman, had taken out loans in the past, which the family had helped to pay off, namely RM5,000 in 2019 and RM22,500 in April 2025. She said Chong had assisted in negotiating both settlements. After the second incident, the son moved out of the family home. However, in June 2025, the family began receiving threatening messages, including a video of a car on fire. The mother later discovered that her son had borrowed an unknown amount of money from loan sharks again in July 2025.
