Former CJI DY Chandrachud vacates official residence, shifts to 14-Tughlaq Road bungalow
On July 7, Justice Chandrachud had told news agency PTIthat his luggage was packed and he, along with his wife and children, would soon move to a paid government accommodation.
"We have actually packed up our luggage. Some of the luggage is already gone to the new house and some are kept here in the storeroom," Justice Chandrachud had said.
Justice Chandrachud, his wife Kalpana and daughters Priyanka and Mahi, both of whom are persons with disabilities, were living in the official CJI residence.
The former Chief Justice of India had expressed regret over the controversy, citing his daughters' medical condition and the need for a wheelchair-accessible home. He said he was awaiting the completion of the new house before moving in.
On July 1, the Supreme Court administration had written to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs stating that Justice Chandrachud had stayed in the CJI official residence beyond the permissible period and sought the property to be vacated.
The letter requested the MoHUA secretary to take possession of the bungalow from the former CJI without any further delay as the permission granted to him for retention of the accommodation expired on May 31, while the prescribed six-month period of further stay under the 2022 Rules ended on May 10.
Earlier, Justice Chandrachud had said that he spoke to his successor CJI Sanjiv Khanna and told him he would return to 14, Tughlaq Road bungalow, where he lived before becoming the CJI.
However, Justice Khanna had asked Justice Chandrachud to continue staying in the CJI bungalow as he did not want to shift to the official residence.
Under Rule 3B of the Supreme Court Judges (Amendment) Rules, 2022, a retired Chief Justice of India can retain type VII bungalow, a level below the 5, Krishna Menon Marg bungalow, for a maximum period of six months after retirement.

The governor also met disaster-hit families in Janjehli and offered words of comfort. He said five truckloads of relief material had been dispatched to Mandi and one to Kullu from Raj Bhavan. He assured that more assistance would be sent promptly if requested by the district administration. Calling the calamity a major disaster, the governor said that immediate restoration is a challenge and there is a pressing need to take preventive measures to avoid such situations in the future. Referring to the Supreme Court's observations on environmental protection, he said they must be taken seriously and acted upon collectively. Leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, who also accompanied the governor, said the people are still in deep shock as their sources of livelihood were destroyed. He appreciated the state govt for restoring essential services like roads, electricity, and water supply through the district administration. Family alleges NRC fear behind elderly man's death in Kolkata
A 63-year-old man died in Kolkata on Sunday (August 3, 2025) morning, with his family claiming that he had been living in fear that he would be sent to Bangladesh if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was implemented. Dilip Kumar Saha, a non-teaching staff member at a private school in Dhakuria, south Kolkata, had arrived in Kolkata in 1972 from Nawabganj, Dhaka, and had been living in Anandapally, Regent Park area. The wife of Saha said that he used to watch television news and was concerned about implementation of NRC in the State. 'He has been under severe stress for quite some time regarding this.... He was afraid that he would be sent to a detention camp and then pushed back to Bangladesh, where he had nobody. He had a valid voter ID card and other documents,' Aarti Saha, wife of the deceased said. There was concern about the implementation of the NRC in West Bengal before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and a sense of panic spread among the people in the State, particularly when leaders of the BJP stated that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act would be followed by the NRC. West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee had in September 2019 said that six persons had died due to NRC-related fear in West Bengal. On March 11, 2024, the Union Home Ministry notified CAA rules, but the BJP dropped NRC from its manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. West Bengal Power Minister and local Trinamool Congress MLA Arup Biswas reached out of the family members of the deceased, said. 'This is what the fear of being thrown out of the country could do to a man. What they (Centre) have started in the name of the SIR shows their anti-people attitude, and the result is in front of you,' Mr. Biswas said. West Bengal's ruling party raised the issue and said that the death was the BJP's orchestrated campaign of fear and intimidation. Bihar MP's Wife A Voter In 2 Separate Constituencies: Report
New Delhi: A Left MP from Bihar who challenged the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in the Supreme Court has come under a cloud amid reports that his wife was registered as a voter in two separate Assembly constituencies with two distinct EPIC numbers, election office sources said on Sunday. Petitioner and Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation MP Sudama Prasad's wife, Shobha Devi, allegedly had two EPIC numbers – RGX3264140 and WVA0308544. While one of her EPIC numbers was registered in Arrah Assembly constituency with Lavarish Seva Kendra as the designated polling station, the other pertained to Agiaon constituency with Samudayik Bhavan Araila as her polling station, said sources in the Bihar election office. The fresh 'dual EPIC number' controversy comes close to the one involving Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, who is also allegedly possessing 'dual' Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers. Earlier, the Supreme Court, while hearing a batch of pleas challenging the electoral roll revision ahead of the Assembly elections in November, posted the matter to August 12, assuring to intervene immediately if there is 'mass exclusion' of voters in the SIR. On Saturday, Tejashwi Yadav stirred a political storm in Patna with a claim that his name was missing in Bihar's draft electoral roll. ECI sources hinted that he might be possessing 'two' EPIC numbers, with only one of them being validated in the SIR. The election office on Sunday wrote to him seeking details of his 'second' EPIC number, which, according to him, had been deleted from the voter list. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of Digha Assembly constituency asked the Leader of Opposition to present the original copy of the voter ID card whose number was alleged to be missing from the draft electoral roll. 'You are requested to kindly provide the details of the EPIC card (along with the original copy of the card) mentioned by you in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, to the undersigned, so that it can be thoroughly investigated,' wrote the ERO. The letter dated August 3 said the communication was linked to Tejashwi Yadav's 'statement given in the press conference held on August 2, 2025, regarding non-inclusion of names in the draft electoral list published on the basis of eligibility date July 1, 2025'.
