Fantasy Football Draft Rankings 2025: Justin Boone's Top Running Backs
Justin Boone won the FantasyPros Most Accurate Expert Award in 2019 and has eight top-10 finishes in the competition. He now brings his rankings acumen to the Yahoo Fantasy audience after recently joining the team as an analyst. He will consistently be refining his draft rankings during training camps, the preseason and leading up to the season. When news breaks, rankings updates will be reflected here, so bookmark this page and get ready for your drafts! And be sure to follow the links below to see his latest redraft rankings at every position. Latest RB Updates Omarion Hampton was always a top-20 fantasy back in my redraft rankings, but he's moved up into low-end RB1 territory now that Najee Harris is missing time due to an eye injury. Harris has been at training camp in street clothes, sporting a hoodie and sunglasses to protect the eye and perhaps to hide it from any onlookers. The longer he sits out, the more time Hampton has to impress coaches and distance himself from the veteran — and that's exactly what he's doing, according to everyone in and around the team, and he received early touches in the Hall of Fame preseason game. There's a reason why the Chargers used a first-round pick on Hampton and fantasy managers should continue investing, even if it requires a third-round pick to draft him now. There was always something strange about the way the Texans discussed Joe Mixon's recovery throughout the offseason. A clear timeline was never provided and the signing of Nick Chubb added doubt to the entire situation. Now we know Mixon will miss multiple weeks of training camp with a foot injury and the team is 'hoping' he'll be ready for Week 1, according to Jordan Schultz. Even after a surprisingly strong performance for Houston last season, it's going to be very difficult to draft Mixon with any confidence over the next month. For the time being, I've dropped Mixon down into the RB3 range, while moving Chubb and rookie Woody Marks up as intriguing late-round selections. The Jaguars' backfield seems to be an open competition between Travis Etienne Jr., Tank Bigsby and Bhayshul Tuten. It's no surprise to see the veterans getting more work at the start of camp, but Bigsby earning the bulk of the carries in the early going is worth noting. New Jags coach Liam Coen showed us last year in Tampa that he's willing to let the best man win the job, when he promoted a Day 3 rookie in Bucky Irving into the starting role, so anyone could emerge in Jacksonville this season. While the uncertainty can be frustrating, I still find myself taking chances on Tuten and Bigsby at their very late ADPs. Three Takeaways From Lions Vs. Chargers Hall Of Fame Game
While there's not too much to take away from an NFL preseason game in terms of team schemes and understanding a team's identity, there's always room to analyze players competing for roster spots or the chance to land a starting position for their team. In last night's preseason Hall of Fame Game between the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers, quite a few NFL prospects were competing for the chance to make an NFL roster. While the game resulted in an uncompetitive 34-7 blowout, there were three takeaways from the matchup that highlighted NFL talent either making a name for themselves or willowing under the pressure. Trey Lance Leaves His Mark On The Chargers' Backup Quarterback Position Battle With Justin Herbert being the undisputed starting quarterback for the Chargers, the backup role is up for grabs between journeyman Trey Lance and veteran Taylor Heinicke. Lance received most of the reps by playing three quarters for the Chargers and throwing for 120 yards to go with two scores on 13 of 20 passing. He took part in leading five scoring drives for Los Angeles and showed off improved accuracy on intermediate throws along with a phenomenal touch pass on a deep ball to rookie wideout KeAndre Lambert-Smith. It's likely that Henicke will get the requisite reps in the Chargers remaining three preseason games, but for the time being, Lance has shown the first dose of promise during in-game competition for the backup role. Omarion Hampton Pulls Ahead In The Starting Running Back Competition In just one drive and two carries, Omarrion Hampton showcased his upside as a rusher that has many feeling he could be the Chargers' starting running back come opening week. Hampton dashed for eight yards on his first official carry before bearing the brunt of a powerful tackle by Lions cornerback Rock Ya-Sin that resulted in him gaining a yard on his second carry during a third and three. The Chargers would convert the upcoming fourth down into a touchdown from a Lance pass to tight end Will Dissly. With Najee Harris' availability for the upcoming season unknown as he manages an eye injury from an offseason fireworks accident, Hampton has the chance to be Los Angeles's lead back with a continuous stretch of strong moments from preseason play. Detroit Lions Backup Quarterback Position Battle Remains In Flux Like the Chargers, the Detroit Lions have their starting quarterback position solidified with the presence of Jared Goff. They do however have a need at the backup quarterback position and veteran Kyle Allen along with Detroit's third-year mid-round selection Hendon Hooker are battling it out for the spot. Allen was given the start and through two quarters was pretty underwhelming. He did lead a 15-play 60-yard scoring drive in the second quarter that saw him complete all four of his pass attempts for 19 yards. That drive was off the heels of consecutive interceptions from Allen which killed first quarter momentum for the Lions offense when they were somewhat moving the ball. In half two, Hendon Hooker took over the reins and led Detroit to a three-and-out, a turnover on downs, a punt and an interception. The Lions offense recorded just three first downs that entire second-half offensive stretch. Both quarterbacks combined for just over 100 yards passing with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Each will need better moments of play to have a chance at obtaining the QB2 role.

Steelers rookie RB Kaleb Johnson enters the Jaylen Warren chat in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Steelers let Najee Harris leave in free agency to the Chargers. Then, they drafted his likely replacement, Kaleb Johnson out of Iowa. Now that training camp is here, it's time to see how it all plays out. The Steelers have shifty incumbent Jaylen Warren, along with free agent signee Kenneth Gainwell from the Eagles. And then there's Johnson. "The third-round running back figures to step into a pretty significant role as a rookie following the departure of Najee Harris in free agency," ESPN's Brooke Pryor writes. "Though Jaylen Warren is the veteran in the room, Johnson is a bigger, more physical running back that can complement Warren's slippery speed. The two continue figuring out roles and snap distribution during camp. I'll be especially watching Johnson during Mike Tomlin's favorite backs-on-backers blocking drill as he goes up against the team's linebackers." MORE: Browns rookie QB Shedeur Sanders could be subject to a 'second draft' Warren's supporters have wanted him to get a bigger workload for a couple years, and this seemed like his chance. But Johnson has the chance to be a standout back in his own way. It looks like it might wind up being a two-headed RB monster again in Pittsburgh.
