Khalid Jamil emerges as frontrunner for Indian football team coach role
Khalid Jamil has emerged as a frontrunner to take up the vacant Indian men's football team coach role, according to a report from PTI. Jamil, who has been known for his work with limited resources in the I-League and the Indian Super League, is amongst the three candidates who have been shortlisted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) along with former India coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic. advertisementThe AIFF went through close to 170 applications, which included the likes of Xavi, Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell. The news about Xavi's application came to light on July 24 as AIFF appreciated the interest from the Spaniard, but decided not to proceed with it given the costs involved with the operation to bring the former Barcelona manager on board. However, PTI is stating that amongst the three who have been shortlisted, Jamil appears to be the favourite to land the job. The AIFF have resisted the tendency to hand over the reigns to an Indian coach at a crossroads moment but the current Jamshedpur FC coach seems to be edging ahead. Why Jamil could be the people's choice Jamil's work with Indian football has been incredible. After representing India in 40 international matches, the former midfielder started his career as a coach with Mumbai in 2009. However, it was with Aizawl FC that he came into the limelight. Given the limited resources at his disposal, Jamil guided them into the I-League from the second division and helped them win the title in their first season. After stints with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, Jamil once again came into the limelight for guiding Northeast United to the semi-finals of the ISL in the 2021-22 season. He then went on to repeat the feat with Jamshedpur FC. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey confirmed on July 24 that an announcement about the new Indian coach will be in 10 days. "I think 10 days from now, if all goes smoothly.""We will hold executive committee meeting and thereafter the name of the head coach will be announced," Chaubey executive committee meeting will be key to decide if Jamil becomes the new India coach. - Ends

AIFF To Reveal New Head Coach For Indian Men's Football Team On August 1: Report
Last Updated: The AIFF is set to announce the new head coach for the Indian men's national football team on August 1. The shortlisted candidates are Constantine, Tarkovic, and Jamil. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is expected to announce the next head coach of the Indian men's national football team on August 1, as per reports. According to Sportstar, the resumes of the three shortlisted candidates have been forwarded to the AIFF Executive Committee, which has scheduled an emergency meeting for next Friday. The sole agenda of the meeting will be to finalize and confirm the new head coach. The Indian men's team has been without a head coach since July 2, following the mutual departure of Manolo Márquez after a one-year tenure, during which the team failed to win a competitive match. Selection Process Underway After the coaching position became vacant, the AIFF opened applications with a submission deadline of July 13. The response was overwhelming, drawing 170 applications from across the globe. With the FIFA international window approaching in September, and crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore scheduled for October 9 and 14, the AIFF is facing pressure to expedite the appointment process. The Executive Committee retains the authority to request additional candidates or seek further clarification before making a final decision. The AIFF's technical committee then shortlisted three candidates: experienced Anglo-Cypriot Stephen Constantine, Slovakian coach Stefan Tarkovic, and Indian tactician Khalid Jamil. All three are now being considered for the head coach position. Former India international Renedy Singh was also under initial consideration, but according to sources within the AIFF, the current assistant coach of Bengaluru FC was not included in the final shortlist. His name was instead discussed for the assistant coach role, a decision the committee decided should be made in consultation with the incoming head coach. Among the three finalists, Khalid Jamil is reportedly emerging as the leading contender. Crucial Fixtures Ahead India currently sits at the bottom of Group C in the third round of AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, following a draw against Bangladesh and a defeat to Hong Kong. Their next fixture is a home match against group leaders Singapore on October 9. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 18:07 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Indian football: Xavi, Kewell, Fowler - who all applied for India coach job and who are the contenders?
Xavi Hernandez was the Head Coach of FC Barcelona in 2024 (Photo by) The All India Football Federation may not have found its next head coach yet, but the hiring process has already delivered an unexpected twist in Xavi Hernandez. The iconic Spanish midfielder and former Barcelona manager, was among the 170 applicants for the job. The application, sent from Xavi's personal email and highlighted in green in the official shortlist, took officials by surprise. 'Yes, Xavi's name was there. The application was emailed to the AIFF,' national team director Subrata Paul told TOI earlier. However, the technical committee did not pursue his candidacy further due to the significant financial implications. Who all applied for the role of India head coach? Beyond Xavi, the federation received interest from a mix of coaches with some well-known in Indian circles and others with global pedigree. The list included former India coach Stephen Constantine, Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic, Liverpool legend Harry Kewell, ex-Blackburn boss Steve Kean, and familiar ISL faces such as Kibu Vicuna, Eelco Schattorie, and Khalid Jamil. Of those, Constantine, Tarkovic, and Jamil have been shortlisted, with Jamil being the lone Indian contender. What are Xavi's achievements as a player and coach? While the AIFF couldn't afford him, Xavi's application is seen as a sign of the growing international appeal of Indian football. The final decision now rests with the AIFF executive committee, which will choose from the shortlisted trio of Constantine, Tarkovic, and Jamil.
