SA's Jordy Smith eliminated by rookie in J-Bay
The event continued on Sunday to complete the men's round of 16 with three-to-five foot lines rolling through at Supertubes.
With a dissipating swell, conditions slowed down throughout the morning, and organisers decided not to run the women's quarterfinals on Sunday.
The competition has been called off for Monday and Tuesday, and the next call will be made on Wednesday at 7.45am for a possible 8.03am start.
On Sunday, Mignot stayed busy building a solid score, while Smith opted to wait for a bigger set wave, which never arrived.
Smith left it too late, needing a near-excellent score in the dying minutes, and Mignot advanced to his second quarterfinal appearance on the Champions Tour (CT).
'If you take on No 1, and you beat him, it's a bigger reward,' Mignot said.
'I always want to surf against the best and push myself. These moments are special, to share them with Jordy, the king of J-Bay, but I'm super happy to take the win.
'Before coming here, I was watching clips of Jordy, because I think he's the best out here.'
Drawing each other again but on a different continent, Americans Griffin Colapinto and Cole Houshmand got a rematch in Supertubes after facing each other in the final of the VIVO Rio Pro just over a week ago.
Colapinto got to work quickly to build a score, and shut it down with a 7.50 (out of a possible 10) for his powerful turns and drawn-out carves on a big J-Bay wall.
Coming under pressure from João Chianca (BRA) in the first heat of the round of 16, world No 2 Yago Dora (BRA) started on the back foot.
A quick equipment change saw a shift in momentum as Dora knew he had to get a big score on the board.
Relying on his aerial prowess, Dora raced down the line, launching himself into the golden light of the morning and navigating the landing for an excellent 9.00.
'I broke the tip of my fin, and that was my magic board,' Dora said.
'I didn't want to change boards, so I just caught a wave in to change the fin.
'There was a long lull, so I tried to stay patient and wait for an opportunity. It was a weird wave, so I knew I would have to go big again.
'The second best feeling in surfing is flying through the air and landing in the flats, it's so scary, so when you pull it off, it feels so good.'
With Smith knocked out of the event, Dora has moved into the No 1 position, but Kanoa Igarashi (JPN) can still challenge him for the yellow leader jersey in J-Bay as both advanced to the quarterfinals. — World Surf League

International flavour for upcoming Algoa National Rally
Rally fever is set to once again grip the Nelson Mandela Bay Region when the Algoa National Rally takes place on July 25 and 26. The event comprises rounds three and four of the National Rally Championships and has partnered with the Tour European Rally (TER), an international rally series approved by the FIA, offering a perfect blend of sporting events and tourism in unique locations — all enhanced by global promotion through TV, social networks, web platforms, newspapers, magazines and other media. One of the exciting international drivers participating is 16-year-old Zambian driver Seth Gomes with his mother Urshlla, who is a past Zambian and African navigator champion in the navigator seat. Nicknamed the 'Zambian Assassin', he will no doubt be pushing his Mitsubishi Evo to the absolute limit. Other international teams in the mix are the Namibian team of Peer Rohm and Pieter Steyn in a classic Ford Escort Mk2, Jairaj Jutley from Kenya driving a VW Polo with local navigator Ottie Marais, and former Kenya Rally Championship winner Lee Rose with local lass Ingrid Jeacocks in Algoa Rally Club chair Oliver de Man's Toyota Corolla. De Man, who has been instrumental in putting the event together, has graciously loaned the car to Rose as he focuses on the organisational side of things. Swaziland driver Jono van Wyk will be hoping to continue his great start to the national campaign after he and Nico Swartz won the first round of the National Rally Championship in a Mazda 2 a couple of weeks ago. With 44 confirmed entries so far, it promises to be an epic event and another exciting chapter of the Algoa National Rally that dates back to 1983. The rally will have its traditional ceremonial start at the VW Auto Pavilion on July 25 where the rally cars will gather from 8.30am and start at 10am. The first stage will be at Johnny's Pit Stop (Spiders Web) with a start time of 10.10am. There will be food trucks at the spectator zone. The second spectator zone will be at Jachtvlakte at 2pm. To close off the Friday's action, there will be a spectator-friendly night stage at 5.15pm on tar on the Daniel Pienaar road where it crosses the R75, which will be closed for racing action. There will be road closures in this area for the duration of the rally stage. The bridge on top of the R75 will be closed from 2pm on the Friday (Exit 28 R334 Coega/Kariega). Saturday will see the action move to the Longmore Forest where the rally cars will tackle the first stage at 8am and spectators are encouraged to be there as early as possible as the access road to the spectator zone crosses a section of the track. There will be a large hospitality tent in the service park in Longmore with a big screen showing a live feed of the event. At the Spectator Zone, fans can see all four stages being run from the same location and there will also be catering. The Friday stages are free to view. ‘I'm human too' — Shauwn ‘MaMkhize' Mkhize asks for respect
Shauwn 'MaMkhize' Mkhize wants people to think before dragging her name through mud. The controversial businesswoman and reality TV star has been in turmoil since a raid was conducted by the SA Revenue Service for falling behind on taxes in November 2024 and her exit from former Premier Soccer League team Royal AM FC, which was auctioned off in a bid to recoup her reported R40m tax debt. Recently she was falsely linked to businessman Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala by Ian Cameron during a parliamentary briefing. During a recent sit down on 947 with Robert Marawa, MamKhize said despite Ian having apologised, she felt 'he was trying to get relevance' and needed to give a 'proper' public apology to clear her name. MaMkhize said she wished people didn't overlook the fact that she is human and would respect her feelings when sharing their opinions about her. 'I so wish people can understand I am human.
