BBQ gas bottle used to heat home in winter

Ruth Olliver ordered a 45 kilogram bottle from ELGAS on 10 July, but was still waiting on delivery more than two weeks later.
"I've had to hook-up - or my husband has not me because I wouldn't know what I'm doing - just hook-up the little wee BBQ bottle.
"But, you know, when I say to them 'I've go no gas' they say 'oh well we can't do anything for you'."
The Ōpunake resident had been using gas for heating, hot water and cooking for the past 18 years.
"The heater takes quite a bit at this time of year. I go through one a fortnight, a 45kg bottle a fortnight, so I was sort of running out."
ELGAS said deliveries to Taranaki had been impacted by illness and recent severe weather.
It warned customers not to interfere with the gas cylinders themselves.
"We strongly encourage customers to avoid handling 45kg home gas cylinders themselves.
"This is best left to our people who are trained in safely connecting and disconnecting these bottles and conduct leak checks when exchanging cylinders."
Olliver was not the only ELGAS customer having delivery issues with several commenting on social media.
"Yes, it took three and half weeks to get one swapped. Poor service and no follow-up," said one person.
Another was in the same boat.
"Agreed. I've been waiting three weeks now. Just about need my other one swapped! Useless."
One customer had waited almost a month.
"Ordered on 30th June... three phone calls [later] finally delivered 24th July."
Olliver said communication with ELGAS had been difficult.
"Just no response every time I ring they're just like 'we'll send an urgent message' but I've got no reply, no communication back. Nothing."
ELGAS eventually offered to supply her an emergency bottle.
"They did say to me we can get another bottle and get an urgent truck down to you, but it will cost you $250 for the truck and I said, 'well I'm not paying it'."
Olliver's gas usually cost about $150 per cylinder, including delivery.
An emergency delivery had also been offered to one of the social media commentators - at a cost.
"Waited 21 days then was told I would have to pay emergency fee to get it that day... So I emailed an official complaint... It came that day.
"They told me it would cost $250 for emergency fee. I refused."
ELGAS said it appreciated its customers' patience as the company worked through these challenges.
"We are proactively shifting resources to meet local demand and expect service to return to normal shortly."
Olliver had in the meantime swapped to another provider who had delivered fresh gas cylinders on the same day.

Broken pump forces Hamilton firefighters to withdraw from house fire

Photo: RNZ / Tracy Neal A "catastrophic failure" to a fire truck responding to a Hamilton fire highlights how under-resourced firefighters are, the New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union (NZPFU) says. But Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) says issues like this can and do occur and crews are trained and highly skilled to cope. Six fire crews responded to a garage fire in Flagstaff late Thursday night. On arrival they were met with a fully involved house fire. Hamilton local secretary for the NZPFU Jay Culhane said that while in the middle of fighting the fire, Te Rapa's pumping appliance lost the ability to pump water. "There was a catastrophic failure of the pump, so they lost water pressure to the firefighters, both to the internal and external firefighting crew," Culhane said. The crew inside the house had to withdraw from the building and the external firefighters had to move away. "The biggest problem is a fire doubles in size every thirty-seconds so the delay in operations ... you are going to lose more property and suffer more damage." Pumping operations were quickly swapped over to the Chartwell pump truck which began pumping water to continue fighting the fire. There were no reports of injuries to the firefighters. However, Culhane said more incidents like this were happening and poor planning and under-resourcing were to blame. "You can service an old truck as much as you want but they are still going to have issues," he said. A FENZ spokesperson said it had a fleet of around 1300 firefighting trucks. "Our firefighting trucks are well maintained, safe, certified, and legally compliant. We have a strict schedule for regular maintenance and repairs. "We typically spend more than $20 million each financial year on new firefighting trucks and other vehicles. In 2023/24 we spent $26 million, in 2024/25 we spent $20 million, and in 2025/26 we will spend $29 million." The spokesperson said since FENZ was established in 2017, it had purchased 317 new firefighting trucks. Third-annual national wild goat hunting competition gets underway

Photo: Supplied / Department of Conservation Hunters are targeting thousands of wild goats in a nationwide competition in efforts to protect farmland and the environment. Wild goats were prolific breeders that threatened native biodiversity, forests and farmland, and were believed to occupy around 14 percent of Aotearoa. The third-annual national wild goat hunting competition begins today, running into November. The Department of Conservation (DoC) and New Zealand Deerstalkers Association event aims to address the growing population of wild goats, estimated to be several hundred thousand. Association board member and its Hutt Valley branch president, Trev Gratton said in the first year they totalled 10,000 goats, 12,500 last year, and now they hoped to exceed that figure. "Goats are an issue throughout the country and it's something that we've identified along with our partners at DoC as something that we want to be involved in, with trying to help mitigate those numbers," he said. "They are a pest and they need to be managed. And one of the ways of doing that is looking holistically and working with partners within the community to actually start getting those numbers under control." Gratton said there were 5000 hectares of huntable private land it was working to get hunters onto this year for goat removal. He said its landowner assist plan will give both hunters and landowners like farmers confidence about the hunting operations in the coming months. "We've had a tremendous response from landowners from one end of the country," Gratton said. "Particularly when it comes to going onto private land like that, it's a very considered operation. It's not done where you're posted on a Facebook page and say, 'hey show up there and feel free to go on.' "It's done via the local branch and the local branch management in conjunction with the landowners, so that everyone's comfortable with how things are going to progress going forward. So it is a very considered, very methodical process." Gratton said the plan detailed insurance coverage around NZDA hunters and health and safety to mitigate any concerns, and it held future possibilities. "We're looking at obviously bringing these relationships further field and doing it all year round with other problems with deer and what-not onto this land. "So it's a collaborative effort to talk to landowners and to build those ongoing relationships within the community." Ten landowners have already registered their interest. The event was also being supported by Federtaed Farmers, Hunting and Fishing and Te Tari Pūreke Firearms Safety Authority. The Department of Conservation said on its website, goats arrived in Aotearoa as early as the late 1700s when Captain James Cook released them in the Marlborough Sounds during his second voyage - and the government has run wild goat control operations for about a century.
