Tourists slam ‘paradise beach' as actually being ‘most disappointing in the world'
Three Thai beaches with glittering reputations have been named the most disappointing in the world.
Thailand is home to over 2,000 miles of coastline and 8,000 tropical islands, meaning visitors there are spoiled for choice, whether they're after somewhere remote and peaceful or looking for bustling beaches with plenty of bars and sports on offer.
One of the country's most famous coastal spots is Railay, a small peninsula between Krabi and Ao Nang. While it is not an island, its high limestone cliffs make it accessible only by boat, giving it a hidden, hard-to-reach feel.
Rock climbers from across the world travel here to test their nerve on the towering cliffs that surround the main sandy stretch. Most visitors head there for the sunbathing and swimming opportunities, however.
As famed as Railay may be, not everyone has enjoyed their time there. The beach has been listed as the most disappointing in the world, according to a study by Ibiza Summer Villas. The research found that 1.59% of online reviews of Railay used negative language. While this might not be a huge percentage, the 110,000 TikTok and 165,000 Google searches for the beach suggest a significant number of holidaymakers have been let down by Railay.
Recently, one unhappy tourist from Spain wrote: "Sitting on the beach right now. Water is dark and murky. Nowhere to get a sunbed or shade. Filled with long‑tail boats taking up half of the beach. Much better places on the mainland."
Another stuck a boot in, adding: "We visited Railay Beach on our Krabi tour and what can we say – it was by far the most horrible place we visited in Thailand. Totally overrun by tourists streaming through the streets in swimwear or populating the at‑best mediocre restaurants. The charm of the scenic place has been completely lost as a result."
And a third added: "Paradise lost, in a barrage of noise and fumes and rubbish. What a shame. So many longtail boats and tourists. Spoiled."
Railay is not the only seaside spot to have its paradise reputation questioned. Patong Beach in Thailand also came in for a drubbing.
"Often billed as Thailand's party capital, Patong is as lively as it is controversial. While some visitors love the nightlife, others are left disappointed by noise, aggressive vendors, and lack of cleanliness. It ranked second overall for being overhyped, with particularly high rainfall levels and one of the worst weather scores in the study," the Ibiza Summer Villas study notes.
Maya Bay, also in Thailand, is next up.
Made famous by The Beach, Maya Bay once epitomized tropical escape. But years of overtourism forced the Thai government to shut it down to allow nature to recover. Now reopened under strict regulations, the experience is heavily restricted: no swimming, timed visits, and large crowds. Despite continued popularity online, Maya Bay came in third overall for failing to meet visitor expectations, with 2.05% of reviews being negative.
Although it's become synonymous with bohemian beach life and celebrity sightings, Byron Bay ranked poorly on satisfaction (1.57% of reviews are negative vs. high search volume) and had relatively high rainfall, ranking 16th out of the whole study. It may have a chilled‑out reputation, but the numbers suggest it doesn't deliver the serenity it promises.

Travelling to Thailand from the UAE? New rule you need to know regardless of visa status
New travel rules are in, here's what to know before heading to Thailand Jetting off to Thailand from the UAE? There's a new must-do before take-off. Thailand has rolled out its new Digital Travel Arrival Card (TDAC), an online form that all travellers – yes, even if you're visa-exempt – now need to complete before arrival. The free digital card replaces the old physical arrival card, and you'll need to show confirmation to immigration officers when you land. The form needs to be filled out within 72 hours of your arrival and can be submitted either solo or as part of a group if you're travelling with family or colleagues. It's quick to complete and available on the Thai Immigration Bureau's official website. While the travel card is mandatory for all non-Thai visitors, it is not a visa and does not change any existing visa processes you need to go through prior to travelling. The updated travel card was introduced in May 2025 and aims to convert the formality into a paperless system. Woman says famous Scottish island 'isn't always like the videos you see online'
A woman who lives on one of Scotland's most visited islands and shares her everyday life online has opened up on how it may not match what many tourists imagine Scotland is renowned for its breathtaking terrain featuring peaks, such as the Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness. Countless visitors flock to the nation to experience its natural beauty and scenery, alongside attractions like historic castles. The country is equally celebrated for its cultural heritage, made up of its diverse selection of whisky, tartan kilts, bagpipes and the traditional delicacy haggis. Scotland is believed to provide a tranquil retreat from England's bustling cities, but one woman has revealed the stark truth about living on the nation's most sought-after island, the Isle of Skye. Stretching 50 miles in length, it's the biggest island in the Inner Hebrides, distinguished by its striking landscape and charming fishing communities. Niamh Mackinnon, 22-years-old, documents her island life through clips on TikTok and YouTube. In a recent TikTok upload, the Scottish local explained: "I live on the most popular island in Scotland and the reason we're so popular is because of specific landscapes, one of them being the Old Man of Storr, so I thought today I would show you what it's like at the height of summer because it might not be the picturesque, tranquil, peaceful dream that you are being sold online sometimes but we'll see, let's go." The Old Man of Storr is a soaring rocky formation on the Trotternish Ridge that is considered the most iconic hike on the Isle of Skye. Niamh prepared for her journey to the beloved landmark, bundling up in several clothing layers, waterproof trousers and hiking boots. As she arrived, Niamh was faced with rows of parked cars and dreary weather, prompting her to say: "I'm not trying to just complain in this vlog but the midges are so bad. I need to get a move on and look how busy it is." She embarked on the trek up the Old Man of Storr, but the conditions were far from ideal – grey skies, rain, fog, and a muddy path surrounded by grass. The young vlogger reflected on the changes over time: "I'm not even that old and there was a time when I was younger where you would come up here and know every single person that you passed. Tragic." Sitting amidst the bustle, Niamh shared her mixed feelings: "I'm just sitting here like looking at how busy it is and everything and I don't know, this is when I start to feel a bit like hypocritical or like bad about how much I post Skye online because it also makes me sad seeing this place so busy when I remember a time when it was so quiet and peaceful." She continued, grappling with her emotions: "And of course it's nice for other people in the world to get to experience this and it's on my doorstep so I don't wanna be greedy but yeah, it's a weird feeling to be honest." Although the Old Man of Storr was the focus of her video, the fog meant it was barely visible. Niamh concluded her video early, opting to head back down due to the wet conditions, crowds, and limited visibility of the Storr. She pointed out that this is "just the reality of Skye sometimes." Niamh's TikTok video has racked up an incredible 2.4 million views, alongside thousands of likes and comments. A shocked viewer asked: "This HEIGHT of summer???" Another user shared their experience: "I know this weird feeling. It's the same here in the Swiss alps. "As a kid you knew almost everyone you met on a hike. Now it's packed and most tourists don't even say hello." A third remarked: "A lot of places seem to struggle with excessive tourism having a negative impact. Hope that a happy balance can be found for the area you live in."

EasyJet traveller feels sick after spotting what couple are doing on budget flight
A 27-year-old woman travelling home from Tenerife got the shock of her life after watching a couple engaging in a disgusting and disturbing act onboard the budget airline A holidaymaker was left horrified after noticing what a couple were doing on a budget flight. Erin Butcher was flying home from a seven-day family holiday in Tenerife when she caught a man 'picking dirt from under his partner's toenails' during an easyJet flight Erin first noticed a woman's bare feet propped up on a tray table during the flight. The 27-year-old was then left feeling 'disgusted' when the man appeared to pick at her French pedicure toenails before 'flicking bits of dirt' around. She claims the couple did this for 20 minutes, while other passengers laughed nervously in confusion. The fashion merchandiser shared footage of the stomach-churning moment with the caption 'Nothing beats an easyJet flight. Hope no one ate off this tray table on the next flight'. The clip was uploaded on TikTok on July 31st and has since gone viral, racking up more than 336,200 views. Sickened, Erin says it was 'unhygienic' and made for a 'depressing' end to her holiday. Erin, from Southwark, South East London, said: "I felt so disgusted and I couldn't believe it. "The partner was sprawled across the seats with her feet on the tray table, which was shocking enough. "Her partner then started picking at her toenails and flicking little bits [of dirt] everywhere. It was disgusting." She added: "I was absolutely horrified. I was with my family and none of us could actually believe what was happening. "Even to do that in the privacy of your own home is questionable but to put them on a tray table where people are eating off all day. "I was relieved I wasn't sitting next to them. I had the perfect view from my aisle seat which is horrifying. I couldn't really take my eyes off even though I wanted to. "Her feet were on that table the majority of the four-and-a-half-hour flight. She was really making herself at home. It's so unhygienic. "Other passengers around us had noticed as well. Everyone was laughing and it was quite unbelievable. "As if things aren't depressing enough when your week in the sun has just ended and you're faced with toe picking the whole way home." Many users took to the comments to express their disgust. One user wrote: "Totally gross." While someone else commented: "That's disgusting anywhere." EasyJet has been approached for a comment. It comes after another plane passenger recently blasted a mum for changing her baby's dirty nappy on a tray table rather than taking the infant to the bathroom. She said on Reddit: "I'm a really nauseous flyer, so I took a Dramamine ahead of time and did my best to get some sleep during the flight. "This didn't happen because of the baby's crying, but oh well, I know flights are scary and stressful for infants and there was nothing anyone could do about that. "What got to me was the couple changing their baby's extremely stinky number two diaper right in the middle of their seats, using the mum's food tray as a changing table. "We were at the back of the plane right by the bathrooms, which I confirmed had baby changing tables when I had to go back there to throw up after the smell hit me." Much to her delight, the pilot ended up speaking out against this behaviour - but sadly it was too late to stop the smell from making its way around the cabin.
