Nimisha case reconciliation claim untrue: Victim's brother

Time of India4 days ago
KOCHI: Confusion prevails over revocation of death sentence of Nimisha Priya, the Kerala nurse on death row in Yemen for 2017 murder of a Yemeni citizen, with the victim's brother contesting claims by an eminent cleric that an "agreement" has been reached.
Victim Talal Abdo Mahdi's brother, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, rejected the claims by Kerala Sunni cleric Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musaliyar in a Facebook post on Tuesday.
MEA also didn't confirm the reports. Kanthapuram's office Monday said Nimisha's death sentence was revoked following mediation between Yemeni religious scholars and govt officials. Nimisha's execution was earlier scheduled for July 16 but postponed, purportedly on the intervention of Kanthapuram.
In his post, Fattah asked Kanthapuram's office to clarify who communicated with Talal's family and his blood heirs. "I do not believe the preacher's office would issue such statements unless someone provided them false information that we accepted reconciliation, which is absolutely untrue," he wrote.

Kolkata Police Probe Espionage Angle In Arrest Of Bangladeshi Model Shanta Paul

The officials of the Kolkata Police are probing to figure out whether Shanta Paul, the Bangladeshi model arrested from Kolkata earlier this week on charges of illegally staying in the country after securing fake Indian identity documents, was working as a spy in the country just like Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra. The officials are probing this new angle after learning through her social media account that Paul went to the India-Nepal-China border and recorded a video. Police investigation also revealed that Paul had opened a page on social media called 'Asan Travels Kolkata and Bangladesh' where she was promoting her tourism business. The police officials are also investigating whether Paul took a loan from any state-owned bank in India to open a hotel, based on her Facebook post. A city police insider said that Paul had also travelled to several places in West Bengal and neighbouring Sikkim. "She posted photographs and videos of her visits on social media. As a travel vlogger, she went to Nathu La in Sikkim. There, she took pictures of the India-Nepal-China border. Investigation is on to ascertain whether there are similarities between her case and that of Jyoti Malhotra, as she also used to travel to different places in India as a travel vlogger and take pictures and videos there," the police insider added. Jyoti Malhotra was an Indian travel vlogger, who ran the YouTube channel "Travel with JO". In May this year, Malhotra was arrested by the police under the Official Secrets Act amid the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict. Malhotra was accused of espionage, passing sensitive information to operatives of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). It was learned during investigations that she used to take travel photographs and videos and smuggle those to Pakistan. The Kolkata Police is now investigating to find out whether Shanta Paul also operated similarly to that of Malhotra. Last Monday, the officers from Park Street police station arrested Paul from a flat in Kolkata's Golf Green area in south Kolkata. The police became suspicious after seeing the documents she had provided while applying for a passport. During the arrest, several Bangladeshi documents were recovered from Paul's Golf Green flat. It is learnt that Paul, a model by profession, entered India with a valid visa. However, instead of going back before the expiry of her visa, she managed to fake Indian documents like the AADHAAR card and Voters' ID card for herself during that interim period. After managing those fake identity documents, she started not only staying in Kolkata permanently but also earning substantial amounts through modelling and acting assignments, city police officials probing the case, said. Police have learnt that she had acted in supporting roles in some Bengali and Tamil movies during the last couple of years. She even purchased a property in the southern outskirts of Kolkata, which was jointly owned by her and her live-in partner, a resident of Andhra Pradesh and a Merchant Navy official by profession. Police are now investigating whether Paul, using her presence in the glamour world, had developed any influential connection within West Bengal as well as in other states, by which she was able to operate openly in the glamour and acting world without causing doubts in the minds of anyone. It is learnt that even in Bangladesh, she was quite successful as a model and also had won some awards there. She had earlier worked as a staff member of the Bangladesh-based Regent Airways.

Bangladesh To Unveil Reform Charter On Revolution Anniversary

Bangladesh's interim government said Saturday it will release its slate of democratic overhauls on August 5, the one-year anniversary of the overthrow of the previous Sheikh Hasina government. Muhammad Yunus, the 85-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner, is leading the caretaker government as its chief adviser. Copies of the draft have been sent to political parties for their consent. The Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser Shafiqul Alam made the announcement on his Facebook page and said "... it will be presented before the nation in the presence of all parties in a mass ceremony next Tuesday, August 5 at 5 pm." Protests against Sheikh Hasina government began on July 1, 2024, with university students calling for reforms to a quota system for public sector jobs. They culminated on August 5, 2024, when thousands of protesters stormed Hasina's palace as she escaped in a military aircraft to India. The July Declaration is a long-anticipated document aimed at creating a charter in Bangladesh's ongoing transition to mark the first anniversary of the mass uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5 last year. It is seen as the official state commentary on July protests, and the interim government says the document aims to unify the country around the values of anti-fascism, democratic resurgence, and state reform. The document is being drafted by a body called the National Consensus Commission, which concluded discussions on Thursday. There are questions on the legal basis and implementation of the path envisaged in the documented government resolution in Bangladesh. In the discussions held by the National Consensus Commission, consensus and decisions were reached on 19 out of the 23 fundamental reform proposals. Reports in the Bangladesh media say all parties agreed unanimously on eight issues. The remaining 11 were decided with differing views or comments from various parties. Bangladesh has been governed by an unelected interim government with no political mandate since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in August last year. Massive protests had gripped Bangladesh in July over a quota issue and the Awami League, which was in power till August 2024, has been banned from contesting elections by the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Elections have been announced for April 2026 and the reforms that have been cited by the interim government as a precursor to holding elections will be articulated in the July Declaration. A clear picture of how the charter will be implemented will emerge after discussions with the political parties and the National Consensus Commission in Bangladesh is likely to clarify on this issue on Sunday. The main opposition party when the Sheikh Hasina regime was in power, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has reiterated on its demand for elections in February. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the people want Bangladesh to be run by an elected government. "August is the month of mourning. In this month, Bangladesh witnessed some of the most tragic events in its history- brutal assassinations and the heinous grenade attack. Moreover, in August of last year, anti-liberation and anti-state forces-nurtured by Pakistani ideology-unlawfully seized state power through a deep domestic and international conspiracy. This disrupted the path toward a prosperous Bangladesh and shut all doors of opportunity," said the Bangladesh Awami League. "August 15 marks National Mourning Day-a day stained by one of the most horrific and barbaric assassinations in the history of human civilization. On this day in 1975, the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman-leader of the Bengali liberation movement, a symbol of hope for the oppressed around the world, and architect of sovereign Bangladesh-was assassinated along with most of his family by a group of reactionary killers," the party added.

US: Montana Shooter's Vehicle Located, Suspect Still On Loose, Say Officers

Investigators searching for a man they say shot and killed four people at a Montana bar on Friday morning (local time) have located the vehicle he fled in, but the suspect remains on the loose, officials said, as per CNN. A white Ford F-150 that Michael Paul Brown is believed to have been driving was found on Friday, but Brown "was not located in or around the vehicle," Montana Division of Criminal Investigation Administrator Lee Johnson said at a news conference late Friday. Authorities are now focusing their search in the mountains near Stumptown Road, west of Anaconda, where the shooting took place, Johnson said, CNN reported. Brown is believed to be armed and dangerous, the Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center said in a Facebook post, advising the public to stay out of the area and not to approach him, as per CNN. The shooting took place at 10:30 am (local time) at The Owl Bar, and the scene is secure, the Montana DCI said, without providing additional details about what led up to the shooting. Investigators have identified all four victims of the shooting but aren't releasing their names until their families have been notified, Johnson said. Friday's violence is among at least 256 mass shootings in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Cassandra Dutra, a bartender at the Owl Bar for six months, told CNN she feels extremely overwhelmed and sad about the shooting on Friday. "It just isn't real. It's totally overwhelming," she said. She believes every person in the bar at the time of the shooting was killed, which included a bartender who was the only staff member working, and three customers. She said Brown lived next door to the bar and would come in frequently, but noted "he wasn't a part of the camaraderie" existing with the others.
