India in touch with China over rare earth supply chain issues: MEA

India Gazette3 days ago

New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India is in touch with China on several economic and trade issues, including the supply chain issue of rare earth materials.
Addressing a weekly briefing on Thursday, Jaiswal said, 'On trade issues on rare earth, yes, we have been in touch with the Chinese side, both in Delhi and also in Beijing, and we have been talking to them as to how we can streamline the supply chain issue on rare earths.'
'We are in touch with the Chinese side on several economic and trade issues, as and when anything is required,' he added.
Meanwhile, commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal on Monday highlighted India's engaged with China both commercially and diplomatically on the issue of rare earth minerals supply and is making all efforts to ensure essential imports.
The commerce secretary noted that the government is also in touch with industry organisations like SIAM and ACMA for impact on the auto sector
'We're engaged with SIAM and ACMA, facilitating them to have discussions with Chinese counterparts,' the commerce secretary said.
He noted that China's rare earth move was a global response, and not just against India.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently described China's rare earth export restrictions as a global 'wake-up call,' emphasising that India is actively building alternative supply chains while positioning itself as a trusted partner for international businesses seeking to reduce their dependence on Chinese suppliers.
China's overwhelming control of global rare earth processing - commanding over 90 per cent of the world's magnet production capacity--has created significant vulnerabilities for industries worldwide. These materials are critical across multiple sectors, including automobiles, home appliances, and clean energy systems.
Beyond China, there are only a few alternative suppliers.
The new Chinese restrictions, effective from April 4, require special export licenses for certain specific rare earth elements and their related magnetic products.
Separately, India and Central Asian countries -- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and, Uzbekistan -- have recently expressed interest in joint exploration of rare earth and critical minerals at the recently held India-Central Asia Dialogue.
Rare earth magnets, low in cost but critical in function, could emerge as a key supply-side risk for India's automotive sector if China's export restrictions and delays in shipment clearances persist, according to a report by Crisil Ratings last week.
The rating agency said this week that a disruption lasting more than a month can already impact electric vehicle (EV) launches, affect production, and weigh on the sector's growth momentum.
Rare earth magnets are integral to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in EVs for their high torque, energy efficiency and compact size. Hybrids also depend on them for efficient propulsion. (ANI)

After failed listing attempts in the US and UK, China's Shein to file confidentially for Hong Kong IPO: What makes this a rare move for Chinese company

Shein, the China-founded fast-fashion giant, is reportedly set to file a draft prospectus confidentially for an initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong, potentially as early as this week, according to a report in Reuters that quotes three sources familiar with the matter. The move, as per Reuters exclusive report, could make Shein one of the largest IPOs in Hong Kong this year. The IPO also reportedly marks a rare departure from the city's norm of public IPO filings and follows Shein's failed listing attempts in the U.S. and London. What is confidential IPO filing The confidential filing, expected by Monday (June 30), would allow Shein to shield sensitive financial and operational details during the regulatory review process, a practice more common in the U.S. than in Hong Kong. This approach requires a waiver from the Hong Kong stock exchange's standard listing rules, which typically mandate public disclosure of IPO documents. The exchange may grant such exemptions for secondary listings or spinoffs from companies listed on recognized overseas exchanges like the NYSE or Nasdaq. Shein, however, is pursuing a primary listing, making the confidential approach unusual for the city, where high-profile IPOs like Xiaomi and Meituan involved public filings. Shein, valued at $66 billion in its 2023 pre-IPO fundraising round, must secure approval from the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) before proceeding with the Hong Kong IPO . The company will need to file with the CSRC within three days of submitting its Hong Kong application, in line with Chinese regulations for offshore listings. It remains unclear whether Shein has received preliminary approval from the CSRC. The Hong Kong stock exchange and Shein declined to comment, and the CSRC did not respond to inquiries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo How Shein has been impacted by the US-China trade war The filing comes as Shein navigates challenges from the U.S.-China trade war, with new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and the end of duty-free treatment for e-commerce parcels impacting its largest market. Shein, which sells low-cost apparel like $5 dresses and $10 jeans in 150 countries, shifted its headquarters to Singapore in 2022 but relies on a network of 7,000 Chinese suppliers, subjecting it to Beijing's IPO oversight. The company has also faced allegations of forced labor in its supply chain, which it denies, stating it prohibits suppliers from using Chinese cotton in U.S.-bound products. When Shein's attempt to list in the New York exchange failed Shein's pivot to Hong Kong follows an unsuccessful bid to list in the U.S. in late 2023. The company filed for a New York IPO but failed to secure CSRC approval, Reuters previously reported. The attempt was further complicated by U.S. regulatory scrutiny and trade tensions, including accusations from lawmakers and activists that Shein's supply chain involves forced labor in Xinjiang, a claim the company has rejected. The U.S. ban on imports linked to forced labor added pressure, and Shein's valuation dropped by a third from 2022 to 2023 amid these challenges. After the U.S. listing stalled, Shein explored a London IPO but was unable to gain Chinese regulatory approval, prompting the shift to Hong Kong as a more viable listing venue. A successful Hong Kong IPO could bolster the city's status as a global fundraising hub, which saw $12.8 billion in IPOs and secondary listings in the first half of 2025. Shein's listing, however, hinges on navigating regulatory hurdles and addressing concerns about its supply chain and the impact of U.S. tariffs, which could influence its final valuation. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav narrowly escapes injury as drone crashes into podium in Patna

Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday narrowly escaped an injury as the drone crashed into podium in Patna, from where he was addressing a gathering, reported PTI. He was addressing at the 'Waqf Bachao, Samvidhan Bachao Sammelan' at Gandhi Maidan in Patna. However, he continued his speech even after the incident and thanks the people for coming in large number to listen to him. Earlier in the day, Tejashwi Yadav also spoke at the Vaishya Representative Conference where he promised that if his government come to power, it would give Bihar a government where there is education, healthcare, income, irrigation, listening, and action. "...We want to give Bihar a government where there is education, healthcare, income, irrigation, listening, and action. Today, there is neither listening nor action. Today, you can go anywhere and see that there is immense corruption. Nitish Kumar talks about Jungle Raj, but gives parole to such criminals who keep AK-47 at their house. Today, there is neither justice nor development in Bihar... We have always stood with the public of the state...", ANI quoted Yadav as saying.

Earthquake jolts Nepal: Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes Nepal; susceptible to aftershocks

Earthquake of magnitude 4.2 strikes Nepal (ANI) An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted Nepal on Sunday, according to a statement released by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The statement noted that the earthquake is susceptible to aftershocks, as it occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km. In a post on X, the NCS said: "EQ of M: 4.2, On: 29/06/2025 14:19:05 IST, Lat: 29.35 N, Long: 81.94 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal." Shallow earthquakes, such as the one that struck Nepal on Sunday, are typically more dangerous than deeper ones. In such cases, tremors are felt much closer to the Earth's surface, increasing the potential for widespread damage to life and property. In contrast, tremors from deeper earthquakes tend to lose intensity before reaching the surface. Nepal has a long history of seismic activity, with the devastating 2015 earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, still fresh in public memory. The country lies in the Himalayan region, a zone of intense seismic activity, caused by the ongoing collision between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. This collision leads to the Indian plate sliding beneath the Eurasian plate, a process known as subduction, which builds up immense pressure and stress within the Earth's crust. The subduction zone amplifies this stress, making Nepal particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. The ongoing tectonic collision also contributes to the uplift of the Himalayan mountain range, further adding to seismic activity in the region. Earlier on April 26, a minute of silence was observed in memory of the 8,969 victims who lost their lives during the deadly 2015 earthquake in Nepal. Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stood beneath the replica of the Dharahara Tower, which collapsed during the 7.8-magnitude earthquake a decade ago, and paid tribute to those who perished in the disaster.
