The Ministry of Municipality has reaffirmed its pioneering commitment to attain sustainability through various tangible initiatives towards the creation of a clean and more sustainable environment and green future.
On the occasion of the International Zero Waste Day, the ministry stressed the need for collaborating efforts of people and the related entities to attain the objective in Qatar and reviewed its various efforts and achievements in this regard.
The ministry has a comprehensive legal system to maintain public health, environment cleanness and achieve sustainable development. These include the ministerial decision no 143 for 2022 on the regulations of using plastic bags, besides the launch of the comprehensive national programme for sorting waste at the source, and the ministerial decision no 170 of 2021 regarding sorting of solid waste.
The Integrated National Solid Waste Management Programme launched in 2022 targets an integrated development of all facilities and systems for collecting, transporting and managing solid waste in the country until 2030 following the principles of circular economy, and Qatar National Vision 2030.
The ministry has always adopted an active awareness approach to promote the ideas and practices of sustainability across the society such as constant inspection campaigns to monitor the implementation of the decision to limit the use of single-use plastic bags, a number of conferences and events held throughout the year to promote recycling and sustainability, various activities and events held at the shopping malls to raise public awareness on related issues, and maintaining active partnership with the private sector, factories and companies in this regard.
Accordingly, the ministry has made several key success in waste recycling that include effectively disposing of the country's stock of damaged tyres, the production of more than 277 megawatt/hour of clean energy using recycled materials, and the production of more than 40,000 tonnes of fertilisers from recycled waste.
The Ministry has allocated 51 land plots for establishing recycling plants at Al Afja Area in Mesaieed. The first guidebook for waste management and recycling was also launched, while awareness efforts are ongoing to attain the zero-waste target.

UAE imposes AED 42 million in fines over money laundering in H1

The UAE has imposed more than AED 42 million in fines on private sector firms across 1,063 cases of money laundering in the first half of 2025, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism said on Thursday. In a crackdown on money laundering, the Ministry said that these violations cover four sectors under its supervision within the designated non-financial business and professions sectors. A total of 473 violations were detected by several establishments in precious metals and gemstones trading sector, with fines worth AED 20 million imposed. Establishments in the real estate brokerage sector received 495 violations, with a value of approximately AED 18.5 million, while the corporate service providers and auditors sectors recorded 95 violations, with a value exceeding AED 4 million. Her Excellency Safia Hashim Al Safi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Control and Governance at the Ministry, emphasized that these results reflect the progress made by the Ministry in developing its regulatory system, which is based on an advanced methodology aimed at ensuring the highest levels of compliance with anti-money laundering legislation in the country's designated non-financial business and profession sectors, based on a clear mechanism for on-site and on-site inspections. She stated that these inspection campaigns are part of the Ministry's strategy to build a business environment based on transparency and governance, and to activate proactive oversight tools to address risks related to money laundering and terrorist financing. This will consolidate the UAE's position as a trusted economic hub that adheres to the highest global standards of compliance. Al Safi explained that inspection teams detected violations based on specific technical indicators and regulatory standards, noting that the imposition of administrative penalties primarily aims to encourage establishments to rectify their situations and improve their internal systems, particularly with regard to implementing due diligence procedures, improving the quality of risk assessments, and enhancing the reporting of suspicious transactions. Through these efforts, the Ministry of Economy and Tourism said it is working to spread a culture of preventive compliance and build genuine institutional awareness within the targeted sectors. It also continues field monitoring and evaluation to ensure full compliance with relevant legislation. The Ministry called on all entities subject to anti-money laundering legislation to take advantage of this phase to develop their oversight systems and fully comply with regulatory requirements. It affirmed its continued implementation of inspection and oversight campaigns in accordance with a precise oversight plan based on international best practices.

UAE imposes $11.4m in fines during first half of 2025 on money laundering offenders

The UAE has imposed fines of more than Dh42 million ($11.4 million) on private sector entities during the first half of 2025 for not complying with money laundering regulations, as the government continues its fight against illicit financing activities. A total of 1,063 breaches were discovered in the six months through the end of June across four categories, state news agency Wam quoted the Ministry of Economy of Tourism as saying on Thursday. Companies in the metals and gemstones sector committed 473 breaches, resulting in fines totalling Dh20 million, the ministry said. Real estate brokerages tallied 495 breaches that merited Dh18.5 million in penalties, while corporate service providers had 95 breaches, which resulted in fines of more than Dh4 million. The actions are part of the progress made by the ministry in developing its regulatory enforcement system, which is based on 'an advanced methodology aimed at ensuring the highest levels of compliance', said Safia Al Safi, assistant under-secretary for commercial control and governance at the ministry. The 'clear mechanism' for on-site inspections enables a business environment 'based on transparency and governance, and to activate proactive oversight tools to address risks related to money laundering and terrorist financing', she added. The UAE has made significant strides in the fight against financial crime in recent years. Effective policies on anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism are key to the integrity and stability of the international financial system and the economies of nations, according to the International Monetary Fund. In September last year, the UAE announced a nationwide action plan aimed at boosting its fight against illicit financial activity by introducing the 2024-27 National Strategy for Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation Financing. Last year, the government amended its laws on anti-money laundering, and the financing of terrorism and illegal organisations. A National Committee for Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism and Financing of Illegal Organisations has been formed as a result. And in a major vote of confidence, the EU earlier this month voted to remove the UAE from its list of countries that pose a high risk for money laundering and terrorist financing. The Financial Action Task Force, the global body that combats money laundering and terrorism financing, removed the UAE from its 'grey list' in February last year after significant progress on reforms. The Emirates was placed on that list in 2022. The imposition of administrative penalties primarily aims to 'encourage establishments to rectify their situations and improve their internal systems, particularly with regard to implementing due diligence procedures', Ms Al Safi said. This in turn would help in 'improving the quality of risk assessments and enhancing the reporting of suspicious transactions', she added.
