Japan Coast Guard rescues injured crew from Chinese ship near contested waters
TOKYO: Japan's coast guard has dispatched a patrol vessel to rescue an injured crewmember of a Chinese survey ship in the contested waters in southwestern Japan, officials said Friday.
The Chinese survey ship Ke Xue requested the rescue by the Japan Coast Guard on Wednesday, saying that one of the crewmembers suffered a hand injury during the survey operation in the area off the southern coast of Miyako Island, according to the JCG.
The JCG patrol vessel picked up the crewmember, a Chinese national in his 40s, from the survey ship and transported him to Naha on the main Okinawa island for hospital treatment.
The Ke Xue is one of a number of Chinese survey vessels that operate in waters in the
East China Sea
, where China has increasingly stepped up maritime activity and routinely sends survey vessels, coast guard ships, as well as warships and aircraft, often violating Japanese territorial waters and airspace.
Japanese officials said that on Monday, another Chinese survey ship lowered a wire into the sea known as the Japanese exclusive economic zone - an area where Japan claims rights to conduct economic activity - east of Japan's southernmost island of Okinotorishima, without permission from the Japanese government.
The JCG patrol aircraft warned the survey ship to move out of the waters, and the Japanese government lodged a protest to the Chinese side. (AP)

Viral: Jackfruit tree in China breaks record for growing over 400 fruits, watch video
Image credits: X/@PDChinaLife It seems mass production isn't just a talent of the Chinese factories, but also the trees. In a video going viral on the internet, an overworked jackfruit tree in Longchuan County, China's Yunnan province, has produced more than 400 fruits. In the video shared by China Xinhua News, the branches of the tree could be seen laden with numerous jackfruits that were not only growing from the ends of the branches but also from the middle. Why is the video shocking the internet? Image credits: X Well, a jackfruit tree is a part of the fig family. It is the largest tree fruit, reaching a weight of as much as 55 kg, a length of 90 cm and a diameter of 50 cm. Along with this, a mature jackfruit tree is known to produce about 200 fruits per year, with older trees producing 500 fruits in a year. When compared to this, the production of more than 400 trees is surely a surprising feat whose visual is truly mind-blowing. Why is jackfruit popular? Jackfruit is a tree well-developed in tropical lowlands. It is widely cultivated in countries such as India, Thailand, Indonesia and more. The name jackfruit comes from the Portuguese word 'Jaca', added by physician and naturalist Garcia de Orta in his 1563 book Colloquies on the Simples and Drugs of India. Jackfruit consists of a whitish core that has a distinctive sweet and fruity taste. It is a part of various culinary dishes across the globe. In the past few years, China's production of the fruit has grown significantly by an estimated 300,000 tons produced annually. It is mainly grown in the areas of Hainan, Guangdong, southern Yunnan, Guangxi, Sichuan and Fujian. What is the reason behind such excessive growth of jackfruit? Image credits: X From tree maturity to agricultural practices, there could be numerous reasons why the jackfruit tree produced more than 400 fruits. Jackfruit trees older than 10 years are naturally known to produce more fruit. Additionally, with an ideal climate in regions such as Yunnan, which is known for jackfruit production, the tree growth can be improved. Additionally, China has effectively targeted increasing jackfruit production with the creation of the National Tropical Plants Germaplasm Resource Center-Jackfruit for germaplasm collection, where key actions and technologies are developed to increase the fruit cultivation. To ensure mass production, farmers may make use of practices such as pruning and canopy management, flower induction techniques and proper pollination support. What's important to note is that while more than 400 fruits may be set, jackfruits are known to shed prematurely if they overbear. Thus, not all of them may mature.

Special Prayers Held For Victims As Bangladesh Jet Crash Toll Rises To 32
Bangladesh: Special prayers were held across Bangladesh on Friday, as the death count from a fighter jet crash into a school building in Dhaka rose to 32. Most of the dead were children -- the youngest aged nine -- after the Chinese-made F-7 BJI aircraft slammed into the Milestone School and College on Monday following a mechanical failure. The authorities earlier said 31 people were killed and 170 injured in the deadliest aviation disaster in the country in decades. The latest to succumb to her injuries was 10-year-old Tasnim Afroz Ayman, hospital coordinator Sarkar Farhana Kabir told AFP. "She was undergoing treatment in the High Dependency Unit with 45 percent burns," she said. Ayman's uncle, Saiful Islam, said she remained calm and composed despite undergoing excruciating pain during her final hours. "Even last night, she consoled her mother. But God had other plans," Saiful told AFP. As of Friday, 51 others were receiving treatment in various city hospitals. Following a government directive, all mosques across the country held special prayers during the Friday congregation. Ashraful Islam, who came to pray at a mosque close to the school, lost both his children -- Tahia Ashraf Nazia, 13, and Arian Ashraf Nafi, 9. "I have nothing left," Ashraful told reporters. Nazia kept asking about her younger brother Nafi until her last breath, he added. Her final request was for an ice cream, said her aunt Naznin Akhter. "I'm burning inside. Give me some ice cream... and don't let go of my hand," were her last words, she told a local TV channel. India and Singapore have sent doctors specialising in burn care to assist their Bangladesh colleagues. A military investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the accident.
