TOKYO: Japan's coast guard has dispatched a patrol vessel to rescue an injured crewmember of a Chinese survey ship in the contested waters in southwestern Japan, officials said Friday.
The Chinese survey ship Ke Xue requested the rescue by the Japan Coast Guard on Wednesday, saying that one of the crewmembers suffered a hand injury during the survey operation in the area off the southern coast of Miyako Island, according to the JCG.
The JCG patrol vessel picked up the crewmember, a Chinese national in his 40s, from the survey ship and transported him to Naha on the main Okinawa island for hospital treatment.
The Ke Xue is one of a number of Chinese survey vessels that operate in waters in the
East China Sea
, where China has increasingly stepped up maritime activity and routinely sends survey vessels, coast guard ships, as well as warships and aircraft, often violating Japanese territorial waters and airspace.
Japanese officials said that on Monday, another Chinese survey ship lowered a wire into the sea known as the Japanese exclusive economic zone - an area where Japan claims rights to conduct economic activity - east of Japan's southernmost island of Okinotorishima, without permission from the Japanese government.
The JCG patrol aircraft warned the survey ship to move out of the waters, and the Japanese government lodged a protest to the Chinese side. (AP)

Television footage from Hanamaki Airport showed a few uniformed US military personnel standing outside the parked aircraft. Live Events National broadcaster NHK also showed a video of the Osprey making a vertical landing at Hanamaki. The Hanamaki airport official said the incident did not impact the operation of the airport. Ospreys can take off and land vertically like a helicopter and rotate their propellers forward to fly like a plane. The aircraft has been involved in accidents and several deadly crashes, including one off southern Japan in 2023 when all eight people on board were killed. The fatal crash prompted the US military to ground the aircraft worldwide. Regional Japanese military personnel were heading to Hanamaki to study the latest incident, a defence official told AFP.

Class 1 admissions stall under Anwesha scheme in Koraput

Koraput: Despite the start of the new academic session, the Koraput administration has not enrolled any new students in Class 1 under the state-run Anwesha scheme, leaving many poor children deprived of the opportunity for quality English-medium education. The Anwesha scheme, launched by the state govt in 2015, aims to provide free education to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students in reputed English-medium private schools, with hostel and other necessary facilities fully sponsored by the state. Confirming the development, district welfare officer (Koraput) Sunil Kumar Tandi said, "We have not received any instructions from the govt regarding fresh admissions into Class 1 under Anwesha for the current academic year. Once the directions come, we will act accordingly." Currently, Koraput district has seven hostels under the Anwesha programme, two each in Jeypore, Semiliguda, and Koraput, and one in Laxmipur, with 1,365 children from previous years enrolled in Classes II to X. However, no fresh admissions have been carried out this year. The lack of admissions has sparked concern among parents and rights activists, who fear the delay may deprive an entire batch of eligible children of the scheme's benefits. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Japanese hair growth method Hair's Rich Learn More Undo "Every year, we see poor tribal children getting a chance to study in English-medium schools through Anwesha. This year, no such opportunity has been given. The administration must take proactive steps," said Surendra Patnaik, a local education activist. Meanwhile, in the absence of fresh enrolment, activists have raised questions about the continuity and commitment to a scheme that has played a key role in uplifting education standards among marginalised communities in tribal-dominated districts like Koraput. "The govt should initiate the process soon to ensure that no eligible child is left behind," said Harish Muduli, a tribal activist from Koraput.

Schools asked to raise awareness about Chinese manjha ban before I-Day

New Delhi: As Independence Day draws near, a time when Delhi skies fill with colourful kites, the Directorate of Education has issued a directive to all schools: raise awareness about the ban on Chinese manjha. "All the heads of schools of govt/govt aided/private unaided recognised schools of Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi are requested to generate awareness among students regarding the ban on sharp/Chinese manjha," read the circular. The move followed a communication from the department of environment, warning of serious harm caused by sharp and synthetic kite strings. "With the festive season approaching, the education department has taken the lead in ensuring this message reaches youngest citizens. The circular emphasises that students must be sensitised not just for their own safety but to protect others, especially birds and promote environmentally responsible celebrations," said an official. Their non-biodegradable nature also poses a long-term threat to the environment, clogging drains and harming wildlife. L-G of Delhi earlier notified a "complete ban on the sale, production, storage, supply, import and use of kite flying thread made out of nylon, plastic or any other synthetic material."
