Rape trial: Delhi fast-track courts take 1.5k days, K'taka 910

Bengaluru: The trial that led to former JD(S) Prajwal Revanna's conviction in a rape case was completed in just over 14 months — less than half the time even fast-track courts (FTCs) typically take to conclude similar cases in Karnataka, only one-third of the time taken in Delhi and just over one-fourth of the time taken in Gujarat. In Karnataka, the average duration for rape trials in FTCs is 910 days, it's 1,562 days in Delhi and 1,716 days in Gujarat, as per law ministry data. Prajwal's trial took only around 460 days. Across the country, FTCs show wide variations in how quickly they dispose of rape cases. Among states that reported data, Tripura recorded the longest average time —- 2,097 days per case — followed by Gujarat and Delhi. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru Manipur also reported a prolonged average of 1,395 days, and Jammu & Kashmir stood at 1,095 days. In contrast, states like Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh showed significantly better performance, with rape trials averaging 365 days in both states. Odisha reported 439 days, Telangana 461 days, and Uttarakhand 508 days, figures closer to the intended expeditious purpose of these courts. Uttar Pradesh averaged 606.4 days per rape case, whereas Kerala, despite a high number of disposals, recorded 999 days, while Punjab and Haryana took 650 and 605 days respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo Goa and Jharkhand averaged 730 days each, with Chandigarh marginally slower at 760 days. As per the data available, in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, and several north-eastern states, either no information on rape trial duration was furnished or it was not reported separately. Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any operational FTCs. Against this backdrop, Prajwal's case — the pace at which the SIT gathered evidence, secured cooperation, and moved the case to trial — appears to be a notable exception. As per the ministry, the Centre has pumped over Rs 1,000 crore into these courts since 2019 under the Nirbhaya Fund. Yet systemic delays persist. While the ministry says it has taken steps to boost judicial infrastructure, including expanding courtrooms and housing for judges, and pushing for stricter timelines under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, actual outcomes still depend heavily on state-level implementation. Several states continue to grapple with unfilled judicial vacancies, under-equipped courtrooms, and logistical hurdles like witness non-cooperation and frequent adjournments. Also, not all rape cases make it to the FTCs, which means the time taken in regular jurisdictionaly lower courts would be much longer. Another dataset for FTCs dealing with cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act reveals similarly uneven outcomes. Delhi reported the slowest average trial time at 1,717 days, followed by Manipur at 1,305 days, Nagaland at 1,185, Mizoram at 1,155, and Uttar Pradesh at 1,116.27. Tripura, West Bengal, Assam and Bihar all hovered around or above the 900-day mark, pointing to systemic delays even in child-related offences. In contrast, Puducherry emerged as the quickest, with trials averaging just 180 days. Telangana at 408 days, Madhya Pradesh at 395, and Chhattisgarh at 300 also stayed under the one-year mark. Odisha at 560 days, Punjab at 530, and Haryana at 545 showed moderate pace. Karnataka, despite its large caseload, averaged 724 days, while Kerala disposed of Pocso cases in 594 days on average, and Maharashtra took 575 days. Gujarat reported an average of 869 days. Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Meghalaya reported mid-range durations between 250 and 910 days, while states such as Arunachal Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands did not report any figures. Drone misuse will attract stern action: UP CM

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday issued a stern warning against the misuse of drones in public spaces and said that people trying to spread panic or misinformation through such activities will face legal consequences, including action under the Gangsters Act and the National Security Act (NSA). Calling drone-related mischief a potential threat to public order, the CM said, "Any attempt to incite fear or spread rumours using drones will not be tolerated. The govt will deal strictly with such elements." The CM's statement comes amid growing concerns over unauthorised drone activity in various districts. He said that operating drones without official permission is strictly prohibited, and any violation would result in harsh punitive action. He asked the principal secretary (home) and the director general of police (DGP) to conduct a comprehensive review of drone-related activities and initiate immediate action in case of misuse of drones. He also ordered the implementation of a statewide drone monitoring system to ensure real-time surveillance and rapid response. "District-level law enforcement agencies must increase patrolling and maintain public trust by actively deterring the misuse of aerial surveillance technology," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Access all TV channels anywhere, anytime Techno Mag Learn More Undo Yogi asserted that the govt supported the positive use of emerging technologies but would not hesitate to crack down on its malicious or unlawful use. "Technology should be used for innovation and development—not to threaten public peace or manipulate law and order. Anyone trying to destabilise the system through tech-driven intimidation will face the full force of the law," he said. "By tightening legal provisions and enhancing monitoring mechanisms, the state aims to create a deterrent against drone-related crimes, while assuring the public that law and order will not be compromised," a govt spokesperson said. Housing societies cautioned against fake tenant registration documents; QR code verification soon

Pune: With a spike in fake, tampered, or unregistered tenant registration documents being submitted to housing societies, the Association of Service Providers has sounded an alert to all society committees across Maharashtra. Several recent cases revealed tenants submitting forged leave and licence agreements, often altered PDF copies created by local agents. "Societies need to be vigilant. Fake documents can land owners in legal trouble. Many tenants submit altered PDFs instead of officially registered documents as they are fleeced. They need to do it through a proper agent," association president Sachin Shinghavi said, adding that a robust verification mechanism is the need of the hour. In one case, a society member discovered a forged document only after checking it with the registration department. "An agent edited the document and submitted it as genuine. Only after showing it to officials did we realise it was fake," the member said and added that the department initiated action against the agent. You Can Also Check: Pune AQI | Weather in Pune | Bank Holidays in Pune | Public Holidays in Pune To curb such cases, the association that helps out with tenant registrations has urged societies to insist on viewing a official digital copy of the registered agreement, which has a unique registration number and is accessible via the state IGR (Inspector General of Registration) portal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo State govt should have authorised service providers in place to help people as was the case previously, it said. Shinghavi also highlighted issues in the current leave and licence 1.9 software, where police verification is often missing despite being mandatory. "Though the process includes Aadhaar verification, witness details, address confirmation, and sharing data with police via CCTNS, loopholes remain as in some fake documents these are not seen, which needs to be checked thoroughly using the department website," he said. To address this, the registration department introduced a QR code-based verification in Mumbai City and suburbs under the leave and licence 2.0 software. "The QR code allows instant verification and ensures police verification is auto-generated," said deputy inspector general (IT) Abhay Mohite. Work is under way to expand this feature across Maharashtra, he said. Housing federation members stressed that landlords bear the brunt of fake registrations, and called for a simplified, transparent system. Tenants, too, have fallen victims. "An agent promised me that the agreement was registered, but it turned out to be fake. There should be a way for tenants to verify the process themselves," said Seema N, a tenant in Pune.
