Major US teachers union teams up with AI giants

France 24a day ago
"Teachers are facing huge challenges, which include navigating AI wisely, ethically and safely," said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers during a press conference in New York.
"In the absence of rules of the game and guardrails (from the US government)...we are working with these partners so that they understand the commitment we have to our students," she added.
The AFT represents 1.8 million members across the United States, from kindergarten through high school.
The announcement came as generative AI has already begun reshaping education, with students using tools like ChatGPT for everything from essay writing to homework help.
Meanwhile, teachers grapple with questions about academic integrity, plagiarism, and how to adapt traditional teaching methods.
The AI giants are investing a total of $23 million in creating a New York training center to guide teachers through generative AI learning.
Microsoft is contributing $12.5 million, OpenAI $10 million, and Anthropic $500,000.
The five-year initiative won't develop new AI interfaces but intends to familiarize teachers with existing tools.
"What we're saying to the world and to teachers across the country is you now have a place, you now have a home, a place where you can come and co-create and understand how to harness this tool to make your classroom the best classroom it possibly can be," said Gerry Petrella, Microsoft's general manager for US public policy.
The National Academy for AI Teaching will launch its training program this fall, aiming to serve 400,000 people over five years.
Microsoft staff are already participating in a tech refresher session this week.
AFT affiliates include the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), which represents about 200,000 New York teachers.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew drew parallels between AI and social media, which generated excitement at launch but proved to be "a dumpster fire," in his view.

X chief Yaccarino steps down after two years

In a statement posted on the platform, she said she had decided to step down following what she described as "two incredible years" leading the company through a major transformation. No reason was given for her exit, but the resignation came as Musk's artificial intelligence chatbot Grok was under fire for anti-Semitic comments that praised Adolf Hitler and insulted Islam in separate posts on the X platform. Yaccarino -- a former NBCUniversal advertising executive -- took over as X's CEO in June 2023, replacing Musk who had been serving in the role since his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in October 2022. Her appointment came as Musk sought to focus on product development while bringing in an experienced media manager to restore advertiser confidence. The company has faced significant challenges since Musk's acquisition, including an exodus of advertisers and concerns over content moderation policies. Yaccarino's background in advertising was seen as crucial to rebuilding business relationships. In her statement, Yaccarino praised the "historic business turn around" achieved by the X team and suggested the platform was entering "a new chapter" with xAI, Musk's artificial intelligence company. xAI in March acquired X in an all-stock deal that valued the social media platform at $33 billion, making it a subsidiary of Musk's AI company. "X is truly a digital town square for all voices and the world's most powerful culture signal," she wrote, adding that she would be "cheering you all on as you continue to change the world." During her tenure, X introduced new features including Community Notes, a crowd-sourced fact-checking system, and announced plans for "X Money," a financial services feature as part of Musk's vision to transform the platform into an "Everything App." It also coincided with Musk's endorsement and financial backing of Donald Trump, which saw the South African-born multi-billionaire catapulted into the White House as a close advisor to the president, before a recent falling out.

Most UK retailers focus on investments to drive customer loyalty

Some 87% of UK retailers are funnelling investment into initiatives to power consumer loyalty and drive sales, according to new research from American Express. And many are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to support the drive, while also opening more physical stores. The Amex annual study of 500 senior executives from a range of UK retailers of all sizes, reveals 'notably upbeat ambitions' with 82% aiming to grow their business this year, up 10 percentage points on a year ago. Respondents see ramping up loyalty as integral to driving that momentum, with 45% planning to either launch or enhance an existing loyalty programme this year. This is in response to customer demand, with 64% of retailers believing customers now 'expect ' to be rewarded for shopping with them. The study also found that retailers are increasingly using AI to forge stronger customer connections. Of the businesses already using the technology, 46% highlight improving customer experience as their main focus. Leveraging Generative AI, such as conversational chatbots, topped the list for tech investment, while 43% said they are using Gen AI to enhance online product search while the same percentage are using it to help resolve customer queries or complaints. By contrast, last year's study pointed to more cautious AI adoption, with just 14% applying the tech to improve the online customer experience. The new report also highlighted that retailers are not just focused on digital engagement strategies. Some 38% say they are planning to open new stores in the coming year, with beauty and fashion among the top sectors planning bricks and mortar investment. And their motivation? A massive 88% believe experiential retail is key to driving footfall , including in-store events and augmented reality 'that allow shoppers to visualise products in their own environment'. The study revealed that payments are also moving higher on the strategic agenda, with 74% of retailers surveyed agreeing customers now have increased expectations when it comes to the checkout experience. Some 60% believe they would generate higher sales if they offered more payment options, with 32% describing their current payment experience as 'outdated'. Dan Edelman, UK general manager, Merchant Services at American Express, said: 'UK retail's super-power has always been how the sector adapts to evolving customer demands. From investment in AI-powered personalisation, richer rewards programmes and a broader menu of payment options, merchants are prioritising ways to build lasting customer relationships.'

Nvidia hits $4 trillion making it world's most valuable company

Nvidia shares rose 2.5%, or $3.97, in early trading Wednesday, topping $164 each. At the beginning of 2023, Nvidia shares were around $14 each. The poster child of the AI boom, Nvidia has grown into the most valuable company in the world, surpassing Microsoft, Apple, Amazon and Google parent, Alphabet. The stock's movement carries more weight on the S&P 500 and other indexes than every company except Apple. Two years ago, Nvidia's market value was below $600 billion (€512bn). In its most recent quarter, Nvidia overcame tariff-driven turbulence to deliver another quarter of robust growth amid feverish demand for its high-powered AI chips. Nvidia earned $18.8bn (€16bn), or 76 cents per share, in the period, a 26% increase from the same time last year. Revenue surged 69% from a year ago to $44.1bn (€37.6bn). If not for a $4.5bn (€3.8bn) charge that Nvidia absorbed to account for the US government's restrictions on its chip sales to China, Nvidia would have made 96 cents per share, far above the 73 cents per share envisioned by analysts. Nvidia reports its second-quarter results next month. Wall Street is expecting another quarter of record sales and profit for the Santa Clara, California, company. Nvidia and other companies benefiting from the AI boom have been a major reason the S&P 500 has broken record after record recently. Their explosion of profits has helped to propel the market despite worries about stubbornly high inflation and possible pain coming for the US economy from tariffs and other policies of President Donald Trump.
