Michael Cera reveals relatable reason he 'turned down' Harry Potter role
Michael Cera has revealed that he once 'turned down' an opportunity to star in the Harry Potter franchise.
The actor began his career as a child in the 90s, before shooting to fame thanks to his role as George Michael Bluth in Arrested Development.
He went on to star in a string of movies including Barbie, Superbad, Juno, Nick and Norah's infinite Playlist, Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
During an appearance on the latest episode of the Louis Theroux podcast, the 37-year-old unpacked his career and shed light on why he feared becoming 'too famous'.
When asked if he would ever consider a role in Mission: Impossible, having worked with Tom Cruise in the past on the MTV Movie Awards, the dad-of-two touched on why he hasn't appeared in a franchise just yet.
'Well, I don't think I have a franchise resistance,' he clarified to the host. 'I think I know what you're referring to. I turned one down.
'It was a Harry Potter one. The Harry Fantastic Beasts. I don't even know if I was offered, I think I just declined to engage with it because, I think it would be like probably six years commitment or something.
'Also, we were talking about it earlier, I did make a conscientious choice to limit my exposure a little bit, or just try and be a little more in control of it. Doing especially little kids movies.
'I had a big fear of doing things that would get me too famous. I think that's changed a little. I think I've outgrown that particular feeling, but I think that's what that was at that time.'
He didn't name the part that he turned down, but the prequel spin-off series spawned three films – 2016 offering Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018 and 2022's The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Eddie Redmayne led the way in the three movies, starring opposite Jon Voight, Jude Law, Colin Farrell, Johnny Depp, Mads Mikkelsen and Zoe Kravitz along the way.
Despite growing up in the spotlight, Michael has taken steps to keep his private life firmly behind closed doors in recent years.
He has kept quiet about his wife Nadine and their growing family, with Amy Schumer revealing that the pair had welcomed their first child in 2022 – six months after the little one's arrival.
Last year, he confirmed that he had become a father for the second time, while appearing on The Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon. More Trending
Discussing how fatherhood had changed his priorities, he previously told the Hollywood Reporter: 'I think the only thing that it affects is that you just want to spend as much time with them as possible.
'So when I was 20, I would have been way happier to go off to some weird city and live in a hotel for three months. And when you have kids, you want to be with your family. And you miss them a lot.'

Rowetta's journey began in Leeds when Kate Thornton introduced her to the judges before live auditions were part of the show's format. Her renditions of Lady Marmalade and Circle of Life wowed Simon and Sharon from the get-go. She said she was grateful not to win because she and Simon Cowell had a difference of opinion on the final single. Adding: 'I think it would have been a disaster to win it, and then have to bring out songs like that. I love funky stuff. I don't want to be doing Somewhere Over The Rainbow for the rest of my life.' Rowetta said her reason for doing the show was her grandma, who encouraged her to be on TV like the singers she watched. Her career since has included collaborations with the likes of Solardo, Todd Terry, Oliver Heldens and Shed Seven. A proud Mancunian, Rowetta loves being a role model on her local music scene, often performing at Manchester Pride. She said that when she was growing up, 'there was no one to look up to from Manchester that was Black and female.' Last year, in December 2024, it was announced that Rowetta would be leaving the band. The announcement came amidst speculation about past feuds with band member Shaun Ryder. In February this year, MailOnline reported Rowetta sharing that she has allegedly been physically abused by Shaun.

In the grand finale however Sharmayne and Jamie packed their bags and left the house after the experience grew a little too intense. In previous epsiodes viewers had seen the couple grow close to Jen and Marc and in the June 27 they attempted to take things to the next level in the hot tub. However, the process was too much for Sharmayne who told Jaimie: 'I really can't do this' after they retreated to their bedroom. The pair then attempted approached non-monogamy coach Effy Blue, for advice where the paior admitted they were both uncomfortable with the situation. Following this Effy tired to reassure them these feeling were normal and sent them back into the house. After a bit of flirting in the pool however Sharmayne once again went back to her room with Jamie where she told him, 'I really can't do this.' 'I think this whole experience has been an emotional rollercoaster,' Sharmayne explained. 'However I'm glad that we've done it because I think we've got a lot to take away.' Following their experience in the house it was revealed that since filming, Sharmayne and Jamie are still considering opening up their relationship but haven't 'taken the leap yet'. 'I was a huge star in 1990s but devastating diagnosis forced me out of limelight'
Alannah Myles was propelled to fame in the early 1990s with her iconic hit Black Velvet, but 36 years after releasing her self-titled debut album, the singer has been through a hidden struggle Rewinding over 30 years, soft rock enthusiasts couldn't get enough of the Canadian songstress Alannah Myles and her legendary anthem 'Black Velvet'. The single catapulted Myles to international fame, topping charts in the United States and earning her the prestigious Grammy Award. However, 36 years on from her eponymous debut album, Alannah has endured unseen battles away from the spotlight. Her ascent to fame largely came on the back of 'Black Velvet', an ode to Elvis Presley, its lyrics a poignant representation of his life and charm. It's said that the inspiration for 'Black Velvet' struck Alannah after she visited Memphis for the 10th anniversary of the King of Rock n Roll's passing. Reflecting in 2021, the artist remarked: "It is a country blues song with a chorus, ushering in a time when country music won the hearts of the masses away from disco, punk, and grunge music. If it was a crappy song no one would remember it." The track hasn't just garnered a staggering 358 million streams on Spotify; it also impressed the critics, bagging the award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 1991 Grammys in addition to multiple Juno Awards on her home turf, reports the Mirror US. Facing immense anticipation for her follow-up release, Alannah presented her second album 'Rockinghorse', which featured renowned tracks such as 'Our World Our Times' and 'Song Instead of a Kiss'. She would indeed receive another Grammy nomination, but her subsequent album didn't quite reach the success of her initial release. Following two more albums in the 90s, 'Alannah' and 'A Rival', she took a hiatus from music. In subsequent years, Myles encountered significant health hurdles that drastically affected her life. In 2017, the singer sustained a severe leg injury that was far from a minor inconvenience, severely limiting her mobility and confining her largely to her home for an extended period. Allanah was also diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, an auto-immune condition affecting spinal joints. This ailment can lead to intense stiffness and pain in her back during routine activities and even cause discomfort as she sits. In a conversation with City News, she disclosed: "Now I have issues with being able to sit. That's why when you see me in concert, you see me on a chair. I'm sitting upright. It's painful for me to sit down, so I can't really go anywhere. "I can't sit in a wheelchair. I can't go to a concert, parties, or even medical visits without a padded stretcher. I have no life now as a result of not being able to get myself up independently which makes it only worse... I can get up to walk, but I need help doing it." Despite the disease affecting her physical health, Alannah remained resilient and continued to produce new music. In 2018, she reunited her former band and re-recorded some of her iconic hits, independently releasing them separate from her previous label.
