SC Judges launch Legal Aid Scheme for soldiers' families in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jul 27 (UNI) In a historic judicial outreach, a delegation of Supreme Court judges visited Kashmir for the first time since the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
The occasion marked the launch of the Veer Parivaar Sahayata Yojana 2025, a pioneering initiative to provide proactive legal aid to the families of defence and paramilitary personnel.
The program was organised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in collaboration with the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and the Jammu & Kashmir Legal Services Authority, at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.
Presiding over the event was Justice Surya Kant, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court and Executive Chairman of NALSA. He was joined by Justices P.S. Narasimha, Rajesh Bindal, and N. Kotiswar Singh, who collectively underscored the judiciary's unwavering commitment to expanding access to justice in frontier regions.
In a major highlight, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai also joined his fellow judges in Srinagar today. He presided over two significant events, one--'In Conversation with the Bar', a NALSA-led interactive session at 10:30 am at SKICC, bringing together legal professionals from the region.
CJI also attended the Mega Alumni Meet, held at 2:00 pm at the Convocation Complex, University of Kashmir, Hazratbal, reaffirming the Supreme Court's connection with legal academia and bar associations in Jammu & Kashmir.
Launching the Veer Parivaar Sahayata Yojana 2025, Justice Surya Kant said, 'You serve the country at the borders; we will take care of your family at home.
Soldiers brave enemy fire and harsh terrains. If their families face legal difficulties while they serve, it is the judiciary's duty to ensure they do not suffer silently.'
Citing Article 39A of the Constitution, he said that legal aid is not charity, but a constitutional promise to ensure justice for all, especially those who serve on the frontlines.
The key features of the Yojana include setting up of Legal Aid Clinics at District, State, and Central Sainik Boards.
A dedicated network of nodal officers, legal aid counsels, and PLVs, including ex-servicemen, trained to handle defence-related legal issues empathetically.
Digital integration through e-Lok Adalats, online mediation platforms, and virtual legal services to ensure fast and remote access to justice.
Justice Kant noted that discussions with the Defence Ministry are already underway to ensure smooth operationalisation of these clinics across the country.
He quoted Kashmiri poet Mahjoor, calling on the nation to 'create the glory of a new spring' by embedding unity, compassion, and justice into the legal framework.
The event featured addresses by Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the J&K High Court, and Supreme Court judges Justice P.S. Narasimha, Justice Rajesh Bindal, and Justice N. Kotiswar Singh, showcasing a united front by the higher judiciary.
Also addressing the gathering were Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Executive Chairman of J&K Legal Services Authority, Justice Sindhu Sharma, Chairperson of Ladakh Legal Services Authority, Lt. Gen. From the sacred land of saints, the Veer Parivaar Sahayata Yojana 2025 sends out a clarion call: that while our soldiers protect the nation's borders, the Indian judiciary will protect their rights at home.

Internal quota: Parameshwara appeals to groups to not protest

Home Minister G. Parameshwara here on Sunday said that the Congress government was committed to implementing internal reservation for Scheduled Caste communities in the State and appealed to those threatening to stage protest seeking implementation of it to not do so. 'We had made the declaration on internal reservation in Chitradurga and we have also committed to it in our manifesto. Whatever we need to do should be done according to the procedure and guidelines issued by the Supreme Court. We are committed to implementing internal reservation; procedures have to be followed for which we need some time,' he told presspersons. His statement comes in the light of Dalit left (Madigas) groups threatening a protest from August 11. Dalit left leaders from the BJP, including Govind Karjol and A. Narayanaswamy, have also made such a threat. The Minister said that the commission, headed by retired judge H.N. Nagamohan Das, would submit its report to the government on August 4. It would discussed in the State Cabinet and steps would be taken to implement the recommendations. The A.J. Sadashiva Commission report was not accepted by the then BJP government because of data issues. On the meeting of Ministers from the Scheduled Caste community that he had convened, Dr. Parameshwara said that it was decided to have a common voice on the internal reservation. 'If there are any issues with communities, it was decided to talk to them.'

Malegaon case acquittals have ‘exposed' Congress' conspiracies: Adityanath

'The truth behind the Malegaon case has exposed the Congress' conspiracies,' the chief minister was quoted as saying in an official statement. Adityanath was speaking at the BJP's organisational meeting at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan here, where he, along with senior leaders, rallied the party cadre for the upcoming 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign in the state. Lucknow, Aug 3 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case has 'exposed' the Congress' conspiracies. He also lashed out at the opposition parties for 'acting as a shield for anti-national forces by spreading misinformation about Operation Sindoor', according to the statement. A special court in Mumbai on July 31 acquitted the seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur, in the terror case for want of reliable evidence. The BJP has alleged that Thakur, a Hindutva activist, and Hindu groups were blamed for the incident as the then-ruling Congress wanted to substantiate its theory of 'saffron terror'. The Lucknow meeting was also attended by Uttar Pradesh BJP president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, Deputy Chief Ministers Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brajesh Pathak, and State General Secretary (Organisation) Dharmpal Singh, among others. Addressing the gathering, Adityanath said the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign is a 'mass movement' to awaken national consciousness and not merely an act of hoisting flags. He urged the party workers to connect the campaign with the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative by encouraging the use of products made in India. Adityanath highlighted that the BJP's voter revision campaign in the state ahead of the 2027 assembly polls was another key priority, describing it as a 'cornerstone of democracy'. He asserted that it was the 'political responsibility' of every BJP worker to ensure that no eligible voter, especially those turning 18, is left out of the electoral rolls. State BJP chief Chaudhary echoed similar sentiments, stating that the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign is a powerful expression of patriotism inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He criticised the opposition for engaging in 'lies and negativity' and asserted that the BJP focuses on development and good governance. The meeting also saw detailed instructions being issued for the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. These included organising 'Tiranga Yatras' from August 10 to 12, holding cleanliness drives and paying floral tributes at memorials related to the freedom struggle from August 12 to 14, and ensuring flags are hoisted on all homes and establishments from August 13 to 15, and commemorating August 14 as 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' with silent processions and exhibitions. The two deputy chief ministers emphasised the campaign as a 'people's revolution' and a 'national festival' to celebrate India's unity and pride. They also reinforced the party's core slogan, 'Mera Booth, Sabse Mazboot' (my booth is strongest), stating that a strong booth-level organisation is the key to winning next year's assembly polls. Alka Lamba slams BJP-ruled states over rising crimes against women, alleges protection for culprits

New Delhi Aug 3 (UNI) The All India Mahila Congress today expressed grave concern over the rising crime against women in BJP-ruled states and accused the state governments of trying to protect the culprits. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, All India Mahila Congress president Alka Laamba expressed grief over the death of a 15 year old girl from Odisha, who was set afire by three people. She alleged that the police had initially given clean chit to the accused saying they did not have any role. The girl died in the AIIMS Delhi after struggling for life for several days. Lamba cited several cases from BJP-ruled states where, she claimed, crimes against women, especially those from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities have been steadily rising. She said that between 2022 and 2024, 7418 women belonging to the SC/ST community were raped in Madhya Pradesh. She asserted that this was happening mainly in the BJP-ruled states as the culprits were getting protection from the government. She also mentioned about a "Gujarat Police poster advising the girls not to get out of their homes during the night hours". "It only showed the BJP-ruled state's mindset that instead of providing safety and security to women, it was asking them to stay indoors," she said. Welcoming the conviction and sentencing to life of former JD-S MP Prajwal Revanna, Lamba congratulated the Congress government in Karnataka for conducting the trial in a fast track court. She said, while the Central Government had helped Prajwal flee to Germany, it was due to the efforts of the Congress government in the state that made him face the law. This, she claimed, is possible only in the Congress-ruled states, which unlike the BJP-ruled states, have zero tolerance towards crimes against women. UNI RBE GNK
