Lynk & Co turns to PHEV with 200 km electric-only range in bid to end sales slump
GOTHENBURG, Sweden — Geely subsidiary Lynk & Co is looking to reverse a steep sales slump in Europe with the addition of the 08, a midsize SUV that can drive 200 km (124 miles) in electric-only mode.
Lynk & Co's sales of its two-model lineup, the 01 compact SUV and 02 compact hatchback, through April were down 33 percent to 1,653, according to figures from market researcher Dataforce.
The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle will be aimed at car buyers reluctant to switch to full electric.
'For plug-in hybrid customers, we think the long electric range will stand out as a clear upgrade,' Lynk & Co CEO Nicolas Lopez Appelgren told Automotive News Europe during a driving event for the 08 here May 13.
'EV drivers, on the other hand, may see it as a more practical option given the current state of charging infrastructure. And for high-end petrol buyers, the similar price point could make switching to a plug-in hybrid an easy decision.'
Until recently, the electric-only range on most PHEVs was less than 100 km — and in many cases only about 50 to 60 km.
Several automakers debuted long-range PHEVs with bigger batteries — the 08's pack is 39.6 kilowatt-hours — toward the end of 2024 ahead of a Jan. 1 deadline that increased emissions ratings for the technology to better reflect real-world use.
At the same time, some Chinese brands launched PHEVs in Europe, notably BYD, to avoid EU tariffs on battery-electric vehicles made in China.
PHEV sales were up 32 percent in April, according to Dataforce. The bestselling model last month was the BYD Seal U, followed closely by the Volkswagen Tiguan and Volvo XC60.

Lynk & Co also will avoid the higher tariff on the China-made 08.
The midsize SUV enters a part of the segment that has seen huge growth this year, with overall sales of models with PHEV powertrains up more than 200 percent to 51,823 after four months.
Seven of the 10 top-selling PHEV midsize SUV are new to the niche.
Another limiting factor for PHEVs was the time it took to replenish the batteries, often several hours using AC charging.
PHEVs with longer ranges offer DC fast charging, which for the 08 means it's possible to boost the batteries to 80 percent from 10 percent in about 30 minutes at 85 kilowatts.
Using AC charging at 11 kW means charging to 100 percent take four and a half hours.
The 08 offers a combined 345 hp of power from its four-cylinder gasoline engine and electric motor.
The 08's cockpit is dominated by an iPad-like touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, below which is an inductive pad to provide wireless charging for up to two smartphones.
Built-in car sharing, integrated Wi-Fi, a specially designed Harman Kardon sound system, and advanced driver-assistance features — from park assist sensors to driver monitoring — are included.
Customizable 'modes' are also available. They include a 'relax mode,' with soothing music and sunshades, and a 'pet mode' that turns on the climate control system and displays a message informing passersby that the pet is safe from freezing or overheating and that the owner is aware it is inside the vehicle.
The 08 comes in two trims, Core and More, with the More package offering larger wheels, heated rear seats and an upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system.

Hudson's Bay landlords don't want Liu to move in, but retailer still has a shot
TORONTO - A group of Hudson's Bay's landlords don't want to transfer more than two dozen leases to British Columbia billionaire Ruby Liu, but the department store still has a chance to get its way. The Bay, which filed for creditor protection in March, ran a process over the last several months to find buyers for leases belonging to it and Saks Canada. It agreed to sell up to 28 spaces to Liu. Three leases were transferred to her without any hiccups because they're in B.C. malls she owns, but another 25 are at properties held by a who's who of Canadian commercial real estate firms. Landlords for 23 of those sites oppose the transfer. Several have said in court they've been 'very troubled' with their interactions with Liu and have had 'no productive discussions, no meaningful disclosure.' Liu insists if the court hands her the leases, landlords will warm to her and her plan to open a new department store in their properties. While the disagreement could serve as a roadblock to the Bay closing on its agreement with Liu, lawyers not involved in the case say the retailer has another route it can take to get a deal done. That route lies in changes to the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act — Canada's main insolvency law — made in 2009, said Jeff Lee, a Saskatoon-based partner at MLT Aikins LLP. The changes laid out three criteria courts must consider when asked to assign leases to a new tenant. The first is whether or not the sale has the support of the monitor, a court-appointed, independent third party which helps guide businesses through creditor protection. In the Bay's case, the monitor is Alvarez & Marsal. It has yet to reveal whether it supports the Liu deal and did not respond to requests for comment. 'Before any court application is brought forward, typically the company will test that out with them,' Lee said. 'They're not going to just sort of fly in blind and hope for the best.' The second aspect for the court to mull is whether the proposed new tenant is suitable. Lee said that's determined by looking at whether they can perform the duties of the tenant and pay rent. Liu, who made her money in Chinese real estate, appears to have deep pockets but her experience comes from being a landlord rather than a tenant. The final aspect the court will consider is whether a transfer of a lease to Liu is 'appropriate.' Lee said people should think of it as asking this question: 'Is what's proposed for this post-assignment lease relationship what people signed up for, or are they seeking to rewrite the lease or change the playing field so radically that it's not appropriate?' That's where much of the tension could lie in the Bay case. 'You can't go into CCAA as a tenant and then force your landlords to renegotiate their leases as a result,' said Peter Tolensky, a Vancouver-based partner at Lawson Lundell LLP. The Canadian Press obtained a document last week that Liu's lawyer sent landlords outlining her plans. It says she will take on the leases on an 'as is, where is' basis but doesn't mention the dining, entertainment, children's and fitness experiences she's told media she'd like to include in her department stores. It's unclear whether the leases allow for uses other than a Bay-like department store. A court faced with a request to reassign leases will weigh this context and think about whether 'the landlord's world is being turned upside down by having this new tenant,' said Geoffrey Dabbs, a B.C.-based founding partner at Gehlen Dabbs Cash. 'The more it's a minor inconvenience for the landlord, the more likely the judge will order it,' he said. While the Bay hasn't said whether it will seek an assignment, it's likely because any company in creditor protection has a duty to show the court it's doing its best to pay back companies and people it owes money to, Dabbs said. The Bay has a 26-page list of creditors, with some lenders owed more than $100 million each. Liquidation sales and a deal to sell the Bay trademarks to Canadian Tire for $30 million have put a dent in what's owed but selling leases to Liu would also help. Anyone who made an offer for leases had to make a deposit of 10 per cent of their estimated purchase price. Court documents show Liu made a deposit of $9.4 million, in addition to $6 million for the three approved leases, which would equate to a purchase price of $100 million for 28 leases. When a deal like this is reached, Dabbs said a company typically seeks landlord consent because commercial leases tend to have provisions stopping anyone from transferring a lease without a property owner agreeing. It's not uncommon for landlords to object because any leases that can't be sold and aren't assigned get turned back over to property owners who can choose how to fill them and under what terms. 'Remember, these are anchor leases, so they're probably very favourable to the Bay or to the tenant in a lot of respects,' said Tolensky, alluding to the fact that anchor tenants are often given attractive rents or terms. Thus, it's more advantageous for landlords to get their properties back, said Monica Beffa, founder of an Oakville, Ont., law firm. If they do, they can then charge higher rents, develop them for entirely new uses such as residential units or break them up into smaller parcels that can be rented by a wide array of tenants. If they don't and a court assigns the leases to Liu, landlords will likely be watching her closely to ensure she doesn't violate any terms of the agreement. 'The landlord may be cranky, if the tenant breaches, but put it this way, they don't want to rely on that,' Dabbs said. Rare event could derail S&P 500 record-setting rally
The stock market has had a record-setting run following President Trump's decision to pause reciprocal tariffs on April 9. The move to de-escalate trade tensions reversed a brutal selloff in the S&P 500 that at its worst had sent the benchmark index tumbling 19%, nearly into bear market drop territory. The market decline was severe enough to trigger oversold readings on most sentiment measures, and many market watchers were savvy enough to recommend buying into the fear. However, far fewer likely expected the rally to persist amid a tidal wave of economic concerns and global uncertainty. Yet, that's precisely what the S&P 500 has done. Rather than backfill gains, it has essentially beelined higher, creating a V-shaped bottom that has surprised many who remain with cash on the sidelines watching, hoping for a chance to buy. The index's advance is remarkable, but stocks don't rise or fall in a straight line, and mounting evidence suggests that the S&P rally could stall soon, especially after one particularly rare signal flashed on Friday. Weiss/Getty Images A raging bull market lifted the S&P 500 by over 20% in back-to-back years in 2023 and 2024, including a robust 24% gain last year. The gains were fueled by optimism that the Federal Reserve would switch to market-friendly interest rate cuts, thanks to falling inflation, and abandon the hawkish monetary policy it adopted in 2022 in its war against inflation. Those bullish arguments looked much flimsier this spring. The Fed cut interest rates in September, November, and December last year; however, it paused additional reductions this year because it feared tariffs would spark price increases. In May, Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index, excluding energy and food because of their volatility, showed inflation was 2.7%, up from 2.6% in April, and over the Fed's 2% inflation target. The Fed's pause removed some excitement that lower rates would spark business investment and lower interest expenses on variable debt-bad news for corporate sales and earnings growth that contributes to higher stock prices. Similarly, earlier this year, fears mounted that major hyperscalers, including Amazon's AWS, Meta Platforms, Google Cloud, and Microsoft's Azure, would pare back AI spending on servers and AI chips after two years of huge spending growth. Those concerns strengthened after the launch of the Chinese-built Deepseek-R1, a rival to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, in January. DeepSeek was reportedly built for only $6 million using cheaper, legacy semiconductor chips, rather than Nvidia's latest fastest Blackwell lineup of graphic processing units (GPUs). However, concerns over the Fed and AI spending have decreased since April. Cloud network providers, including hyperscalers, have mostly reinforced their capex plans for this year. Amazon has affirmed a capex run rate of over $100 billion. Meta Platforms increased its planned spend to as much as $72 billion from $65 billion previously. Microsoft confirmed in June that it still plans to spend $80 billion. And Google will likely spend about $75 billion. Some Fed members have also recently expressed interest in cutting as soon as July, and most believe a Fed cut will likely happen in September, suggesting lower rates are getting closer by the day. With rates potentially heading lower soon and AI spending mostly intact, tariff worries are the last remaining hurdle, and those concerns have also ratcheted back following trade progress with the UK and China. The S&P 500 has clearly climbed the proverbial wall of worry, closing at a new all-time high of 6,173.07 on June 27. The bad news, however, is that the rally has lifted the S&P 500's valuation back toward levels seen when the index made its previous all-time high in February. The S&P 500's forward price to earnings (P/E) ratio is 21.9, up from about 19 in April. In February, it was above 22, according to FactSet. Unfortunately, it's historically harder to come by gains in the year following a P/E ratio above 22 Clearly, the S&P 500 isn't as cheap as it was in April, and that could create a headwind for stocks, particularly given sentiment measures aren't oversold like they were then. CNN's Fear/Greed Index registered "Extreme Fear" in April, but it's at "Greed" now. The American Association of Individual Investors survey saw bearish outlooks for the coming six months surge to 61.9% in April, the third highest on record and the highest reading since the stock market bottomed in March 2009 during the Great Financial Crisis. Now, bearishness is more neutral at 40%. Increasing investor giddiness may make it harder for the S&P 500 to continue rallying, at least in the short term. This is especially true given that another relatively rare signal, a relative strength index (RSI) (14) reading above 70, flashed a warning on Friday. RSI (14) measures price action over the preceding 14 trading periods and can signal when stocks become overbought and oversold. An RSI above 70 on the S&P 500 signals buyer beware, while a reading below 30, like in April when the RSI on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) dropped to about 21, suggests selling is overdone. Currently, the RSI on the S&P 500 is 70.2. For perspective, it last exceeded 70 on December 4, before a 4% retreat through January 10. It reached 69.97 on May 19, before a short-and-fast 2.7% drop. Of course, nothing is guaranteed. Stocks can always fall further than anyone expects and remain overbought for a while. John Maynard Keynes famously wrote, "Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent." Nevertheless, the high RSI reading may suggest that the S&P 500 rally may stall in the coming weeks. In the intermediate or long term, well, gains or losses will likely depend on whether high tariffs fuel inflation, causing the Fed to stay on the sidelines, and whether business spending forecasts stay strong or weaken.
