'Never take the ball off him in training' - is this Everton's hardest player?

BBC News02-07-2025
Throughout Wednesday, BBC Sport's Phil McNulty has ranked the hardest men to play for Everton. And in top spot...Johnny MorrisseyMorrissey was signed by Everton from Liverpool in 1962 for £10,000. It was a deal done without Reds manager Bill Shankly's knowledge, and he was so enraged that he vowed never to let such an incident happen again. And Shankly's admiration for this tough, but very talented, winger was confirmed in a decade at Everton in which he played in two title-winning sides. He figured in 1962-63, but more memorably and prominently when he stood out - even among the greats of Alan Ball, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall - in the 1969-70 triumph, his crosses a rich source of supply for the young Joe Royle.Morrissey was beloved among Everton fans, who worshipped both his great ability and his attitude. He still cut a sprightly figure at Goodison Park, at 85, when he was part of the parade of former players at the final men's game at the stadium in May.In the wider game, Morrissey had a reputation as a hard-as-nails character who was not to be trifled with at any time - a winger happy to give any full-back taking liberties a taste of their own medicine.Liverpool's famous 'Anfield Iron' Tommy Smith admitted even he was wary of Morrissey, while former colleague Kendall said Ball's advice to him on his first day at Everton was: "Never take the ball off Johnny Morrissey in training."Leeds United were the template for the hard teams of that era, but Morrissey used to send a shudder through that battle-hardened Elland Road dressing room, his running battles with Jack Charlton the stuff of legend.John Giles, no shrinking violet in the physical exchanges, wrote in his book how he could look after himself "like Peter Osgood did, like Mike Summerbee did, like Johnny Morrissey did - well OK, maybe not quite like Johnny".Scroll down to 14:53 BST for Duncan Ferguson and Peter Reid in second and third, and 08:33 for Kevin Ratcliffe and Pat van den Hauwe in fourth and fifth. Now it's over to you. 'While the fighter in me always wants to box on, I know I have to listen to the medical professionals and save me from myself. 'It is certainly not the way I wanted to bow out but I have to listen to the doctors and those around me.' England ready to ‘get stuck in' again after Lord's clashes

After exchanging good-natured wins at Headingley and Edgbaston, the Rothesay Test series grew testy at the home of cricket as India's fielders clashed with Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in a time-wasting row. That lit a fire under England when it was their turn to field, with Jofra Archer giving a pumped-up send-off to Rishabh Pant while Brydon Carse and Ravindra Jadeja were involved in a mid-pitch collision. India crumbled to 170 all out in pursuit of 193 to fall 2-1 down ahead of this week's penultimate Test at Emirates Old Trafford, but Brook did not think England crossed any line in their pursuit of victory. Brook said: 'I've had a lot of compliments. Everybody (I've spoken to) said it was awesome to watch. It was good fun, I have to admit, it was tiring but it made fielding a lot more enjoyable. 'I think it put them under a little bit more pressure. The opportunity that arose for us to not be the nice guys was because of what they did. We just thought 'we're not standing for that'. 'We had a conversation and said 'it's time to not be those nice guys that we have been before'. You don't always have to be nice. Who knows, that might have played into our favour. It was good fun. 'We were doing it within the spirit of the game. We weren't going out there effing and jeffing at them and being nasty people. We were just going about it in the right manner.' England have been accused of being too carefree in the 'Bazball' era, and Brook revealed it was at his urging after some choice words from head coach Brendon McCullum that they should shed that approach. Asked whether that extra bit of spice will follow the teams up north as England look to guarantee a series win, Brook replied: 'God knows. We'll see whether it happens again and whether it works. 'We were just putting them under more pressure. Baz (McCullum) actually said a few days before that we are too nice sometimes, and I brought it up the night before the last day: 'Baz said the other day we're too nice, I think tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to really get stuck into them'.' Mohammed Siraj was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and given one demerit point for his angry send-off of Duckett during England's second innings, which ended with the pair brushing shoulders. He anticipates more needle between the teams in Manchester, saying: 'Yes (we will see more of it). I'm thinking what we need, what a player needs is sledging.' Brook had a rare fallow week at Lord's with just 34 runs and for the second time in the past eight months, he was knocked off top spot in the Test batting rankings by fellow Yorkshireman Joe Root. 'My main reason I'm in the team is to score runs and I don't want that (ranking) to affect my batting,' Brook added. 'I'm going to go out there, still be the batter I am. 'Everybody wants to be number one (in the world), don't they? Joe is a phenomenal player. I'm not in the same league as him. 'In my opinion, he's the best Test batter of all time. So I'll let him have that one for now.'

Luis Diaz 'determined' to leave Liverpool as Bayern Munich launch second transfer bid

Luis Diaz is hoping that Bayern Munich make Liverpool a second offer they can't refuse after telling the club that he wants to leave in the summer transfer window Bayern Munich are set to test Liverpool's resolve with a second bid for Luis Diaz - who is desperate to join the German side. The Reds have already rejected one £58.6million offer from Bayern for the winger, but the saga is set to rumble on. ‌ Diaz was a key player in Arne Slot 's side last season, contributing 17 goals and eight assists in 50 appearances across all competitions to help them end the 2024/25 campaign with the Premier League trophy. He has two years left on his current contract, but is understood to be unhappy with his current terms and has been chasing an improved deal. ‌ Liverpool have handed bumper new contracts to Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah this year – and also tried to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold up to fresh terms. However, such a contract has not been forthcoming for Diaz, Liverpool have made clear it's not on their to-do list, and the player has therefore made it clear he wants to leave. ‌ The Reds did not even consider Bayern's initial bid, deeming it well below their valuation of the Colombia international. But Bayern have not been deterred and will continue to push for Diaz, who they see as a replacement for Leroy Sane, who left for Galatasaray this summer. As reported by ESPN, a second bid, worth around £60m plus add-ons is being prepared. Diaz is understood to be 'determined' to leave Liverpool this summer if he doesn't get a new deal and has told the club of his intentions. The 28-year-old winger has flown out with Liverpool for their pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan. The Reds are preparing to play AC Milan and Yokohama F. Marinos in Asia and the inclusion of Diaz shows they expect him to stay put. ‌ While he now has his sights set on Bayern, Diaz had initially wanted to leave for Barcelona this summer. Barca sporting director Deco openly admitted the club were interested in signing him and ESPN says an offer of £65m from the Catalan giants was rejected by Liverpool. Barca then tried to sign Athletic Club's Nico Williams, before deciding to go for Marcus Rashford on loan from Manchester United. With Diaz not interested in moving to Saudi Arabia, that has left Bayern as the only option on the table. ‌ Diaz has 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 games across all competitions for Liverpool since joining from Porto for £37m in January 2022. There is a feeling that a deal can be done, given Liverpool are about to increase their spending to beyond £250m when Hugo Ekitike arrives in a £79m deal from Eintracht Frankfurt in the coming days. Liverpool have sold Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold and Nat Phillips this summer but further departures are needed. As well as Diaz, there are doubts over the futures of Darwin Nunez, Harvey Elliott and Ibrahima Konate. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
