Their demands included permanent employment for life guards who have been working for the Tourism department for over 30 years, implementation of social security schemes and ESI/EPF, pension benefits and gratuity for lifeguards, appointment of women life guards, appropriate hike in salary, reinstation of food, uniform allowances and supply of necessary rescue gear to life guards
Inaugurating the march and dharna, the Leader of the Opposition V. D. Satheesan, said that it was deplorable that the government seemed disinterested in resolving the issues of those who risked their own safety on a daily basis to keep others safe.
He criticised the government for neglecting the basic workforce in the tourism sector, one of the core sectors in the State which brought in substantial foreign revenue to the State
Mr. Satheesan assured the life guards that their issues would be taken up in the upcoming Assembly session

Govt. tables private school fee regulation Bill amid protest by AAP legislators
Education Minister Ashish Sood on Monday tabled the Delhi School Education (Fee Regulation and Transparency) Bill, 2025, aimed at regulating fee hikes in private schools, in the Assembly on the first day of the Monsoon Session. The Bill was tabled amid a protest by the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which termed it a 'blueprint for loot'. Speaker Vijender Gupta said detailed discussions will take place on Tuesday. The government had approved the Bill in April amid a stir by parents over the 'arbitrary' fee hikes by private schools in the national capital. Explaining the modalities, the Minister said, 'The Bill will apply to all private unaided recognised schools in Delhi – irrespective of board, land status or minority status. Every school will have to submit its proposed fee structure for the next three academic years. Fees can be revised only once every three years, which will give financial stability to parents, and they will be well informed.' Mr. Sood said strict penalties ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh will be imposed for violations of the Bill, and a fine of ₹50,000 for any coercive action on students for non-payment of fees. Alleging that the previous governments entered into 'under-the-table' settlements with private school managements and did not act against 'violations' under the Delhi School Education Act, 1973, Mr. Sood added, 'This issue is not a recent problem, but one that has been troubling parents in Delhi for the past several decades. But now we are taking decisive steps to solve it so that education is not just within the reach of a select few, but accessible to every child.' Barbs exchanged Leader of the Opposition Atishi claimed that 'no public consultations took place' while framing the Bill. In response, Mr. Sood said, 'We have consulted everyone we had to.' Ms. Atishi added that the Bill should be sent to a Select Committee and directions must be issued to reverse all fee hikes during the previous 2024-25 academic session. Earlier in the day, she claimed there is no provision in the Bill for audits and 'it empowers schools, not parents'. Operation Sindoor The Assembly also held a discussion on the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. BJP legislator Shikha Roy said the retaliatory strikes by India should be incorporated in the school education syllabus. 'I request my government to make this [Operation Sindoor] a part of the syllabus for Delhi students as soon as possible,' she said. The discussion on the strikes carried out by the Indian armed forces saw AAP's Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha hit out at the BJP-ruled government at the Centre, prompting the Speaker to order the Opposition MLA to be marshalled out of the House for using 'derogatory language against the Prime Minister'. The Speaker also directed that the words used by the MLA be expunged from the proceedings.

Senator Aisha Wahab, a Democrat from Fremont, has introduced legislation that would prohibit businesses from using AI to adjust prices based on information stored on customers' phones, laptops, or other hardware. The bill, which cleared the state senate in May, is now being considered in the Assembly. It is one of 30 AI-related measures introduced by the Legislature this year. Wahab cited findings from Consumer Watchdog showing that ride-hailing apps charged more to riders with low phone batteries. Another investigation by ProPublica found the test prep company Princeton Review offered more expensive SAT tutoring to users in ZIP codes with high Asian populations. 'Our devices are being weaponised against us in order for large corporations to increase profits, and it has to stop,' Wahab said during an Assembly committee hearing in July. Ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft have denied unfair pricing practices. Business groups, including the California chamber of commerce, and some Republican legislators are pushing back on the bill. 'This overregulation is impeding how we do business and how people want to do business,' said Assemblymember Diane Dixon, a Republican from Newport Beach. 'I just believe that the market resolves these issues.'

Do not politicise my meeting with Stalin, says O. Panneerselvam
Former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Monday rejected speculations about his likely association with the ruling DMK and further maintained his objective was to form Amma's government in the 2026 Assembly poll. He clarified that his recent comments on the Centre not releasing funds for Tamil Nadu under the Samagra Shiksha programme were not new, and he had flagged this as early as in August 2024. In a statement, Mr. Panneerselvam termed as 'indecent' the attempts by some to politicise his visit to Mr. Stalin's residence. 'The meeting was not related to politics,' he contended.'It is in the culture of the Tamils to visit and enquire about the well-being of someone, who has been under treatment in a hospital and has returned home, and to extend condolences if there is a loss in the family,' he said in a statement. Recalling his visit to the Chief Minister's residence, Mr. Panneerselvam explained that he visited only to enquire about the health of Mr. Stalin and express condolences over the passing of the latter's brother M.K. Muthu. He also rejected contentions and speculations which termed him as 'DMK's Team B', and he was about to forge an alliance with the DMK and maintained there was 'not even an iota of truth in it'. He recalled in June that he had condemned the Hindu Munnani over remarks made against late leaders Periyar E.V. Ramasamy and C.N. Annadurai. 'I have also condemned former BJP leaders who criticised Amma [former CM Jayalalithaa]. I have also recorded my support for the two-language policy,' he asserted. Mr. Panneerselvam added: 'I also directed to vote against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha. Irrespective of wherever I am, I will walk on the path laid down by Amma for the rights and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu.'
